Masquerade
Episode 1.18

I really don’t like Noah Hicks. He’s too smart for his own good, and his attitude gets to me. What does Sydney see in him? He looks like a cocky pig that ran out on Sydney during her rookie years at SD-6. I hate him. To further piss me off, Sydney decides to have sex with him in the SD-6 safehouse. What is wrong with her? I just feel so disappointed. And for some reason, the episode kind of missed. I don’t know. I just didn’t like it.

The whole episode seemed to pale in comparison to the previous episode. It began with a scene of Mt. Subasio in Italy, where Sydney was climbing the top of the mountain in an attempt to disprove the prophecy. The best scene of the night then occurred in Jack’s car. Sydney was thanking him for getting her out of FBI custody. She then told him that she intended to find her mother. Jack tried talking her out of it, and for the first time, he raised his voice at her. He was screaming at her. In the end, he had a point. Jack always has a point. He really got angry at her. What would Sydney find that would be so significant? Her mother left her, her mother betrayed her father and her mother betrayed her husband’s country. I, personally, would have no interest in learning the truth. She should know that her mother would have nothing to offer her. Jack was absolutely right on every single one of his arguments.

Sydney made a lot of mistakes this week. Firstly, she reported her father’s behaviour to Devlin. Jack was forced to visit a CIA therapist. He has gone through a traumatic experience. He’s just learnt that his duplicitous wife may still be alive. No one knows what he’s feeling. Secondly, she welcomes Noah back with open arms. She completely erases the mess he left behind. She then decides to jump into bed with him during a mission. Thirdly, she asked for Sloane’s help to find her mother. She went to his house and sat with him in his office. That’s just creepy. Talk about desperate. Who in their right mind would ask for his help? She’s actually going to trust him. Fourthly, she left her plane ticket in her jacket pocket. Francie and Will now suspect she’s lying to them. Sydney, what have you done?

Jack was the best part of this episode. I never expected to learn that he was sent to jail for suspected collaboration with Laura. He was sent away for six months. Upon his return, he began drinking and pushing Sydney away even more. Sydney recalls that year to have been dark and cold. I also really enjoyed his meeting in Dr. Barnett’s office. She’s a smart cookie. She knew the whole time that Jack was lying to her. She was right. Jack is a master of deception. He is perfectly capable of twisting the truth and perfectly capable of constructing lies. Why did he tell Sydney what their new relationship is temporary? I didn’t catch that part.

Khasineau was Laura’s superior at the KGB. That’s a nice twist. Now Sydney also has motive to catch him. That will sure come in handy for Sloane. He hates Khasineau and he hopes to form an anti-Khasineau group. I’m in.

Syd’s Tips

-          When searching a man for a microchip, make sure you always check his esophagus and stomach. It’s possible that your contact swallowed the microchip.

Quotable Quotes

-          Sydney: “I have to find her.” No, you don’t.

-          Jack: “What could she ever say that would satisfy you?”

-          Sloane: “A daughter has a right to know his mother. I’ll help you find her.” Great. Now Sydney owes him a favor.

-          Sloane (on Khasineau): “He was your mom’s superior.”

-          Jack: “I thought you’d know not to ask Sloane for a favor. You’ll spend more time than you care paying it back.”

-          Jack: “How’d you find me?”

Sydney: “You car was still parked in your garage. I thought you might have walked somewhere close…It’s the fifth place I’ve looked.” I hate when that happens.

-          Sydney: “I think you might want to talk to someone.”

Jack: “Noted.”

-          Marshall: “Trust me, this core, hard-core.” That was great.

-          Francie: “Maybe she’s having an affair with her boss.” Gross!

Some Final Notes

-          Vaughn’s role was irrelevant this week.

-          Francie and Will suspect Sydney is lying to them. Why are they hanging together so much lately? Are they going to be a couple? That would be nice.

-          I like Patricia Wettig as Dr. Barnett.

-          Sloane’s house is beautiful.

-          Dixon doesn’t trust Noah. I don’t either.

I didn’t adore the episode. 2 stars. Is that too low?
