Mamma is really bad. After watching this week’s episode,
I have some sort of fascination for Lena Olin who plays Irina Derevko. I feel like she’s going to be a huge part of
the second season and so far, it looks great. The episode was non-stop action. It flowed and I felt excited to start the second
season. After such a good first season, can the second top it? We shall see.
Mama is in town and she is played by the beautiful Lena Olin.
This feisty independent power woman definitely shocked us all. After finally coming face to face with her daughter, Irina
shoots her in the shoulder. That’s also a nice way to spend time with your daughter.
She’s deadly and devastatingly beautiful. Sydney has definitely inherited that Irina flair. Irina is ruthless and smart. Sydney can be ruthless and smart. On second thought, both Jack and Irina are ruthless and smart. The spyfamily is too smart
for its own good. I loved watching Irina do everything a bit better than her daughter. For instance, when Sydney caught Khasineau, he quickly fought back. She didn’t have enough control over the situation. Irina comes in.
She shoots Khasineau, then asks Sydney to lie down on the floor. Irina is out the door in a matter of seconds. This
woman is a pro. I still haven’t figured out why Irina would turn herself in? She either wants to somehow infiltrate
the CIA, or (this is a long shot) she really wants to make amends for her past
actions. I am just excited to see an Irina/Jack confrontation. Will he even trust her? All that aside, I’m just glad
to have another superb actress on the show.
Vaughn is back. I was scared for awhile. They had me going. Why was Khasineau going to cut him open? This guy Khasineau is weird. I’m glad Irina
took him out. Goes to show you how much she uses people. She no longer finds any use for them and ends up putting a bullet
through their chest. Excellent. Sydney saved Vaughn, reuniting under the French stars. She had such a glow after she
saved him. Alright already. Confess your love to each other. It was so incredibly
hard to watch Sydney shove a huge needle in Vaughn’s chest. I would cry just looking at that thing, let alone it going inside me. This is why you’ve got to love Sydney. She’s gutsy and never has any time to waste.
Will really hit rock bottom. Thanks to Jack, he’s been
spared by SD-6, but the rest of the world looks down on him. Under Jack’s advisement, Will confessed that mostly every
article he ever wrote was fiction, including his latest story, the one on SD-6. Jack got him into heroin, in order to make
his story more believable. Will is now stuck at home with Francie. At least she’s opening a new restaurant. Maybe he’ll
work there. We went from the daring and curious Will, to the helpless Will. It’s terrible to see him like that.
Sydney was then thankfully
relieved from suspicion thanks once again to Jack. Dixon turned her in. I liked how
Carl Lumbly played the scene in Sloane’s office. He really felt hurt to turn his partner in. Great stuff. I’m
glad he realized that Sydney would never hurt the agency. Sydney must
feel so bad keeping the truth from Dixon. He’s the nicest guy on the show.
Last of all, we had Emily’s funeral this week. I found
it nice to have Sydney speak at Emily’s funeral. Will calls it “eulogizing the devil’s
wife.” Emily was a good person and it’s too bad she got mixed up with Arvin Sloane. Sydney’s speech was heart-warming. She never really shows emotion in public. I would have expected her to be crying
a bit more than she did. I’m guessing that Sydney had accepted the fact that Emily was a goner. I think we all had.
Syd’s Tips
-
When attempting to rescue someone who’s
unresponsive, inject him with a shot of adrenaline. You two will be out in no time.

Quotable Quotes
-
Irina: “You must have known this day
would come. I could have prevented it of course.” You wanted this day.
-
Irina: “Sydney, who sent you here? You must tell me.”
Sydney: “Or what? I’m grounded?”
-
Syd: “One thing that I’ve leant
from this is there’s no drug like adrenaline.” No there isn’t.
-
Dixon: “There are times in life when we don’t listen to our heart. To
what we know to be true. In those moments, we’ve lost who we are. We’ve betrayed ourselves. Questioning you loyalty,
your virtue was one of those lost times for me.”
-
Weiss: “‘Bringing them to justice.’
I love that. Arvin Sloane talking about justice.”
-
Barnett: “I think this was a good beginning.”
Sydney: “Like I said, I can handle the problems I’ve got.”
-
Vaughn (to
Sydney in his earpiece): “If we could actually be seen together in public, we’d get the bible and get a
bite to eat.”
Weiss: “Yeah,
can the whole team come? We’re starving.”
-
Sydney: “Emily wasn’t the mother I never had, she was the mother we all
wished we had.” I love this line.
-
Jack: “The CIA had a walk in. She claims
she wants to cooperate.”
Sydney: “Who is she?”
Jack: “Your
mother.”
Some Final Notes
-
Weiss has been shot. I liked him replacing
Vaughn for a bit as handler. He was smart. Anyways, hope he comes back.
-
Francie got the property for her restaurant.
She is excited.
-
What’s up with mom? Can we really trust
her?
-
It felt like this episode really tried bringing
new fans up to speed. I don’t mind it. As long as the show keeps going, I’ll be thrilled.
-
I like the Dr. Barnett scenes. Very smart.
No agent wants to talk to a shrink. I liked how Sydney went to speak to Barnett by herself in the end. Her problems became overwhelming.
-
Cliffhanger: Irina has turned herself in to
the CIA.
I liked the episode. It
was smooth and the hour just flew by. 4 stars
