The Telling
Episode 2.22

I never thought it was possible. How can a finale be this good? Honestly, and I am not kidding, this has been the best season in television history. I am ready to declare that Alias’ second season is the best EVER. If you think what I just said was wrong…you’re wrong. I am just blown away.

Unbefreakinlievable. That’s all I have to say. Is there anything else to say? I can watch this episode over and over and over. I will never get tired of it. Let’s deal with the pressing issues first. Wait! I can’t even start. Ok I found it. Let’s start with that sick fight scene and end with the cliffhanger. We’ll fit everything else in between. I don’t think I’m breathing I’m so pumped.

If there’s ever an award for best fight scene, Jennifer Garner and Merrin Dungey need to win it. It’s official. I have never seen such a realistic fight on tv. J.J. did a great job making this episode work. We knew we had to finish the Psycho Francie storyline and it all worked out for the best. After Will was cleared, the CIA began looking for A.G. Doren: Allison Georgia Doren. They never knew it was Francie only until Will found provacillium in the bathroom. That reveal just made me scared. And then when he’s walking out and Francie attacks him from the back…I could have freaked.

So, the fight scene. Could Sydney have thrown anything else at Francie? From the knife holders (I think that’s what their called) to drawers full of knives, I couldn’t help but jump during that fight in the kitchen. Merrin Dungey has a few moves that I didn’t know about. She can do some kicking. Supposedly, in the beginning of the season, J.J. told her to go learn how to fight. And she definitely did. What’s going to happen to Merrin? I’m guessing she’s off the show since there’s no way Allison survived those three bullets. I’m going to miss her.

Irina Derevko was my pick for the most interesting character of the season. Since her induction into the show, she has been the talk of the tv world this year. This episode added a whole new dimension to her character. Why did she do the things she did? Why did she give Sydney the location of the Rambaldi artifacts? Wasn’t he trying to build Il Dire too? On that classic rooftop scene, she tells Sydney she loves her, that her love for her father and her is genuine. Do I believe that? I was so scared when she jumped off the roof. I thought she wanted to kill herself.

So Irina planned this whole thing even before she gave herself up. She knew she was going to betray the CIA. She was scared of not being able to deceive Sydney as well as Jack. So she dug deep and got them to trust her. In the end, everything worked out. As it turns out, Sark kidnapped Sloane to deliver a message from Irina; she wanted him to join her organization. She then gave herself up so she could one day access the Echelon system to learn where the CIA kept their stash of Rambaldi artifacts. A raid was carried out then the rest of her plan was carried out like she expected.

Derevko tells Sydney before she jumps that it’s not her in Rambaldi’s drawing; it’s Sydney. It seems we have forgotten about page 47, but Irina hasn’t. She tells her daughter that Sloane believes he has been chosen to carry out Rambaldi’s work. Sydney herself has been chosen to stop Sloane. That’s what her destiny is. When will this be revealed?

The Telling, Il Dire, has me all confused. What is it exactly? We never got a good look at it which might have pissed me off a bit, but I was so stunned with the rest of the episode I couldn’t tell. What did it have to do with anything? All the walls were shaking and it required forty-seven pieces to assemble this thing. This includes the di Regno heart. I wish I had gotten a better look at that. It seems that was the only piece that was left.

Sloane’s scenes with Jack were just simply powerful. That’s all they were. Two great actors working off each other. Sloane’s constant belief that Jack and he are destined to work together makes me laugh. It really did. There’s something about Sloane though that puzzles me. He didn’t torture Jack. He didn’t inflict any physical harm on him. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but he does value his “connection” with Jack. I couldn’t believe it. He was never going to kill him.

Sloane has changed. From the reveal that he saved his wife and that he was pursuing Rambaldi to find a cure for her, we could see the change. It was evident. He’s still as merciless as he is selfish, but we know there are some layers to his character. Ron Rifkin has added some layers to his character. I’m dying to know now where Sloane has escaped to. He for sure did.

While Irina might be my favourite villain, I can’t help but commend David Anders for making something more of the snotty Sark. I hope he’s back next year and what are they going to do with him in prison? I died laughing when he said his loyalties were flexible. This is consistent with his character. He’s always been looking after his own benefit from any evil plan. He’s always trying to come out the winner. With just a bit of nose-breaking, he had no problem telling Syd and Vaughn where Sloane was. I think that’s how this guy stays alive.

There were so many beautiful Syd and Vaughn moments. I loved the scenes at the ice rink. These two playing hockey together is beautiful. Jennifer is better. Then, I loved Vaughn’s attempt to book a hotel in Santa Barbara. He actually did until he learnt that Sydney couldn’t exactly make it.

Now for our cliffhanger! Holy Mother of all that is Alias!!! Whoever came up with that? I am forever building a shrine to J.J. Abrams. To push this story two years into the future…WOW. I don’t believe it. Firstly, Sydney just wakes up In Hong Kong after getting battered all over her apartment by Francie. Then, she contacts the CIA and Kendall sends over Vaughn. Why did he say that they asked him to come back? Where was he that he was called back from? Oh, and he’s wearing a ring. What? Did he get married? He better not have gotten married. WHAT’S GOING ON?

Syd’s Tips

-          When you’re fighting in a house, just use anything: knives, drawers, cutting boards. You name it.

Quotable Quotes

-          Kendall: “Yeah, I know what ‘legit’ means.” I’m glad.

-          Will (to Sydney): “I trust you more that I trust anyone.”

-          Vaughn: “Don’t forget about Santa Barbara.”

Sydney: “Yeah, someday.” Yeah, we won’t.

-          Irina: “Stop being as stubborn as I am.” I loved this one.

-          Sark (to Allison about Will): “You don’t fancy him, do you?”

Allison: “Don’t be stupid.” Someone’s jealous.

-          Kendall (to Brandon): “And we have to find out about a breach from Irina Derevko.” I loved this one. Kendall was hysterical.

-          Jack: “I pitied you. That you needed Rambaldi to fill the void in your life.”

-          Jack: “Why keep me alive?”

Sloane: “Because we’re friends Jack.”

-          Vaughn (to Sark): “See, when I have a gun on you, I don’t pull the trigger.”

-          Syd: “I’ve shot you before. I will do it again.”

-          Allison: “I just remembered. Francie doesn’t like coffee ice cream.” This was great.

-          Vaughn: “Since that night, you’ve been gone for almost two years.”

Some Final Notes

-          Marshall describing his sushi adventure to Weiss was hysterical. He got sweaty and all when he was going to kiss Carrie.

-          The scenes in the motel with Francie and Will were creepy.

-          Allison’s full name is Allison Georgia Doren and she supposedly died in a car accident. She was part of Project Christmas. Can you believe that?

-          Irina came to the ice rink. Why would she do that?

-          Sark and Allison are in love. Never saw that one coming.

-          Kendall kept aggravating Brandon about not knowing about the raid. It’s true though. How could he not tell Kendall?

-          Eric Weiss has the same name as Houdini.

-          Will’s password is “Sydney.” He so has a crush on her still.

-          What happened to Will? Did he make it out of the tub all right? Isn’t that what Vaughn said?

-          Irina was great in the office building when she shot Sloane’s men. She’s insanely good.

-          Kendall keeps throwing his headsets.

-          I loved “coffee ice cream” moment. What a great way to figure out that your friend is a double.

-          Syd shot Allison three times. Bye Merrin. It was nice.

-          I love this show.

Stunning episode. 6 stars. I’m dying for the third season.
