17 Seconds
Episode 2.25

These seventeen seconds just might get Denny killed…for good. Can I just mention how brilliant this hour was? If you haven’t noticed. I can’t even begin to think what’s still to come in the two-hour finale. The acting was just on par and the stories are likely to get even better. I’m not ready for this season to end.

Yes folks, these seventeen seconds are probably what might change the world of Grey’s Anatomy forever. Izzie, for one, has gone absolutely mental. What was she thinking cutting Denny’s LVAD wire? How does this make sense to her? The second she started lying to Burke, I knew something bad was going to happen. And cutting someone’s LVAD wire is as bad as something can get. Katherine Heigl was just brilliant. Freakin’ brilliant. Her speech to Denny where she melts down was one for the ages. Telling him she would never forgive him for dying, Denny could not resist accepting her proposition. The things people do for love. On the surface, it seems to me though that Izzie cannot be thinking rationally; she will without a doubt lose her place in the program. But deep under the surface, it shows she really loves Denny. For an intern, to know you can get kicked out of the program is rough. Izzie definitely crossed the line. A mile past that actually. Now, I’m dying to see how this whole thing is going to resolve itself. It’s just not going to be pretty.

The seventeen seconds also had a major impact on Burke’s life: he could die. Rushing to try and stop Izzie from killing Denny, he gets shot by Petey. HE GETS SHOT. Burke gets shot. If this is not going to impact his relationship with Cristina, then I don’t know what will. They might not even be able to reconcile because of this stupid shooter. That’s going to make me sick. The look on Cristina’s face as Burke leaves in the helicopter is priceless. Outstanding acting on Sandra Oh’s part. The look of hatred in her eyes made me shiver. Great work.

McDreamy is an ass. He’s a freakin’ ass. I can’t stand him. Seriously. Expanding from last week’s rant, I have this to say: Get over yourself!  Does he really think he’s that amazing? He doesn’t deserve two women vying for his love. I’m glad Meredith finally gets the damn picture. He’s a miserable dumb ass. You know what bothered me the most? He claims to want to save his marriage, but he doesn’t give a crap about how he treats Addison. And that seriously pisses me off. I don’t blame Addison for losing her cool. Yeah, she did exaggerate a bit, but who cares? I can understand her frustration. She wants to be yelled at. Anything that can show her that Derek still cares about her. It doesn’t seem like he does.

The other character I absolutely loved today was Callie. Obviously still pissed about last week’s incident in the bathroom, she’s not exactly on the friendliest terms with Izzie and Meredith. So Callie spazzes when Meredith asks her about Doc’s condition and how bad it can possibly be. Callie thinks this is a useless interference. But George takes Meredith’s side. Callie gets ever angrier. But I like what George says. He might hate Meredith, but she’s still family. If Callie wants to be part of this family, she’s going to have to treat everyone nicely. That sounds fair.

And last but not least, Doc is on his way out. I can’t stand to watch something like this. Finn tells Meredith what’s really going on. It’s really bad news. The most he’s got left is one year. And Derek doesn’t give a crap. What’s up with this guy? But Meredith really loves her dog. And losing him will be a big blow to her. But we all have to face reality. This is not going to turn out well.

Dear Diary

Meredith: Doc is going to die. My dog is going to die. I can’t believe it. I lay in Finn’s arms and I realized that I was going to lose a part of my family. I don’t care if he was Derek’s for the past weeks, he’s still my dog. I remember bringing him home with Izzie/ I remember being stuck in my bathroom because I was too scared of him. Now he might die soon. Finn says that in the best case scenario, Doc has one year. But Doc isn’t a best case scenario. And the way Derek’s been treating the situation just sucks. He’s treating me like crap and he’s treating Doc like crap. He’s even treating Addison like crap. But I’m glad I’m over him. I am.

Cristina: So I fell asleep while I was having sex. Get over it. I asked to accompany him to Mercy West to get the heart and he didn’t let me come. He chose Alex over me. I can’t believe that. I am his freakin’ girlfriend. I have sex with him. How can he keep a straight face with me? I am so angry with him. And he just stared at me. And I just stared at him. I don’t even know what I’m going to do when I see him.

Today’s Baileyisms

-          “He can’t fire me. Uh, Mr. Evans. Brad. I’m happy for you that you’re not feeling much pain from your very minor injuries but there are a great many people in this hospital who are in a great amount of pain. See they have bullets in their bones, in their chests, and in their brains. Bullets from a gun that was aiming for you and although they can’t say it because you’re the boss of them but most of them at this moment not that they’ll live, not that the pain will subside they’re praying to God at this moment for you to shut the heck up.”

Quotable Quotes

-          Deborah: “Love means never having to use your girlfriend as a human shield!”

-          Alex (to Izzie): “Isobel Stevens has finally left the hospital. Does this mean heart patient dude finally kicked it?”
Izzie: “I’m sorry, this section of the bar is for surgeons. We don’t socialize with gynecologists.”

-          Addison: “I’m having a little trouble because I need to ask you something. And I don’t usually have trouble but what I need to ask I’m not even sure I want the answer to. But I have to ask so I’m just gonna ask you and answer and um… we’ll go from there, okay?”

-          Callie: “So you don’t have to forgive Meredith but I do?”
George: “If you want a chance to be part of the family, yeah.”

-          Izzie: “No! I get it, OK? I get it! You’ll be OK, you’ll be fine, but what about me?! So don’t do it for yourself, do it for me! Please? Please, Denny! Please do this for me! Because if you die—Oh, God! You have to do this! You have to do this for me, or I’ll never be able to forgive you!”
Denny: “For dying?”
Izzie: “No! For making me love you! Please? Please, do this—”

-          Izzie: “In order for you to get this heart you would need to get worse, much worse. And you would have to do it very quickly.”
Denny: “Well, I don’t see that happening, do you see that happening?”
Izzie: “I am gonna make it happen.”

-          Erica Hahn: “It took you long enough, Preston. (Sees Alex) Why is junior here? Your ego get too big for one man to carry?”

-          Neil: “Deborah, I love you.”
Cristina (to Deborah): “Don’t fall for it.”
Neil: “Excuse me but—”
Cristina: “That’s how they do it with the “I love yous” And the “moving in with mes” and the suck you in and the pressure is off and the minute that you actually need something you totally deserve, forget it it’s not gonna happen. Because they’re gonna pass you over for surgery or they’re gonna duck behind you when someone’s shooting!”
Deborah: “You’re very, very bitter.”

-          Izzie: “I have some news for you.”
Denny: “Am I getting a better television? Because this one is ridiculously small and it doesn’t get the porn channels.”

Some Final Notes

-          Cristina and Meredith think the guys are envisioning their faces when they throw the darts at Joe’s. That’s a scary thought.

-          I liked Izzie calling Alex a gynecologist. He isn’t a surgeon. No one’s ever going to let this go.

-          Meredith and Derek arguing in front of Addison at Finn’s place was great. Of course, she had to think that they were sleeping together again.

-          Neal and Deborah are a couple in the restaurant shooting. Neal hid behind Deborah during the shooting and she forgave him until he does the same thing in the hospital. Oh God!

-          Kendra Thomas’ story was beautiful. Her parents wanted to use her as an incubator to raise the child while she’s brain dead. I don’t know what I would want. I think I would want to try and give the baby a chance. That’s just me.

-          Petey’s target, the restaurant manager Brad, was the most self-centered jackass on the show. The actor also plays Vinnie Van Lowe on Veronica Mars. He gets shot in the final episodes of the episode.

-          Denny signed DNR papers. He’s just fed up with his life.

-          Denny’s original donor’s heart flatlined.

-          Dr. Hahn was a nasty person. I’m guessing she’s still jealous of Burke. She did finish right behind him in school. She’s quite a feisty person. Let’s see if she’ll wait before she takes the heart out.

-          I loved Cristina telling Deborah not to accept Neal’s apology.

-          Dr. Hahn’s patient signed up for a heart transplant 17 seconds before Denny did. That’s really tough.

-          Izzie screaming “please” time after time was brilliant. It just felt real and not one of those fake Hollywood scenes.

-          Addison just lost it with Derek. I don’t blame her. She says she can’t get his attention because she’s not Meredith Grey. True.

-          What’s going to happen to Burke?

-          “17 Seconds” is a song by The Cure.

There are even greater things to come, I’m sure. 5 stars
