This show could just focus on Cristina and I would be fine
with it. Seriously, Sandra Oh does this part justice. I never knew she could act so well. I thought it wasn’t possible,
but the show has gotten even better. The stories are getting more personal and the relationships are stronger. You’ve
got to love this show.
Cristina’s story has been a joy so far. Of course,
we knew she wouldn’t be able to lie down in a bed for more than two minutes. She’s roaming the halls looking for
patients to steal. Even when depressed, Cristina is able to beat out anyone. While Izzie is struggling to answer a question,
Cristina appears at the door eager and ready to be a doctor again. You’ve got to love her commitment to the job. That she has. And at least she isn’t cold and inhuman anymore. She finally shows
some emotion. She probably cried for the first time—she has a lot to make up for. Sandra Oh did a great job with her
crying scenes. They looked completely ridiculous and at the same time, real. It hit me. Cristina doesn’t know how to
cry. She doesn’t know what sad is; she doesn’t know the true form of pain. Her pregnancy was a mere setback for
her. And I still cling to the idea that Cristina had changed her mind about the abortion.
Burke finally confronted Cristina. By the way he spoke, it
didn’t seem as if he was angry about his child’s death. That’s the impression I got. Is it considered lying
if the pregnant woman doesn’t tell the father about the child? I would consider it lying. Then again, I’ve never been in that position. Judging on his attitude, this is something Burke is happy
to forget. He’s close to becoming chief and a more complicated personal life is the last thing he needs. I’m glad
he decided to come for Cristina at the end of the episode. He sits with her. Ironically, he is the only one she is willing
to touch. Cristina refused to touch any of her friends, even Meredith. It turns out all she really needed was Burke. Is their
relationship over or barely getting started? I don’t like Burke, but for Cristina’s sake, I hope for the latter.
We had
to assume that someone like Cristina would come from a mother like Mrs. Rubenstein. It seems like every intern has an annoying
mother on the show. We haven’t met Alex’s yet or George’s, but we do hear George say he can’t live
at home anymore; his mom irons his scrubs. It seems as if Shonda has a problem with
mothers. A lot of mother problems this week. Cristina’s mother is the most aggravating woman I have ever met. She
lives in Beverley
Hills where she spends her days redecorating her house. After an hour of watching her talk, I felt
like slapping her. Ellis, on the other hand, is slowly coming back to her senses; she kissed Webber. Are we to assume that
Ellis and Webber had something going on during her resident years? And it all comes together. It seems as if she was more
lucid today. I laughed when she thought she was supposed to operate alongside Dr. Shepherd. Was her analysis of the gun shot
wound an accurate one? Is that how Derek proceeded? I really like Ellis.
The
other fascinating character of the episode was Bailey. Just when we think Bailey can’t be any colder or more professional,
we meet one of her first patients, Jeremiah Tate. He is really sick and he raises money by running triathlons for his causes.
This time, however, seems to be his last time in the hospital. Bailey promised him she would have him out of the OR alive.
Sadly, this wasn’t the case. Jeremiah was a DNR. Notwithstanding that, Bailey kept performing CPR. I had never seen
Bailey lose her cool the way she did. Jeremiah was obviously important to her. The scene where Bailey called his family was
powerful. Bailey has become my favourite character. I want more Bailey.
Dear Diary
Cristina: I don’t
know what got over me: the tension in the room, the baby probably, my mother pissing me off…it could have been anything.
I just couldn’t stop crying. That’s why I should have been working. I don’t think when I’m working.
I’m occupied; I’m stressed. It helps. I was just trying to rip everyone apart. Izzie and George tried helping
me, but I just started yelling and screaming. I wanted them to sedate me. That’s never happened to me before. I don’t
do crying. I don’t like it. I don’t want it. Then Burke comes and hugs me. I don’t get him. Does he have
genuine feelings for me? He has to make up his mind. My mother was still there. Why is she here? Does she honestly think I
want her to be here? She has to be the single most annoying person on this earth. I am not joking. I hate her.
George: Why does the chief
do this to me? Does he honestly think I’m reliable and responsible? I’m a surgeon; I want to be a surgeon. Dr.
Grey wasn’t a surgical patient anymore. I don’t know what got over me though. I’ve never disrespected authority
and I did today. I thought I could make it up to him by coming in the room and restraining Dr. Grey myself. Does Webber have
feelings for Dr. Grey? He doesn’t seem to want to see her or even talk to her? What happened between them? I should
have been there for him though. I wasn’t thinking. I should have been there for Meredith. It’s just, once in a
while, I’d really like a surgery.
Today’s Baileyisms
- “McDreamy, go sit by someone who cares.”
- “Do I look psychic to you? He’s the
chief. He asked. You go.”
Quotable Quotes
- Addison: “Well isn’t this cozy. Can I join
or are you not in to threesomes?”
Meredith: “I have to go.”
- Derek: “You really are Satan, you realize that
right? If Satan were to take physical form he’d be you, everywhere ... all the time.”
Addison: “I am not Satan.”
Derek:
“How come you haven’t gotten on your broomstick and gone back to New York where you belong?”
Addison: “Stop being petty.”
Derek:
“Stop being an adulterous bitch.”
- Addison: “Derek, have you ever thought that even
if I am Satan and an adulterous bitch that I still might be the love of your life?”
- Cristina: “I will kill her!”
Helen:
“But I am her mother.”
Meredith: “We don’t do well with mothers here. Why don’t you leave and come back later.”
- Cristina’s
Mom (about a latte): “A non-fat one?”
Cristina: “No, a fat one.” I loved this one.
Some Final Notes
- Derek decides to go sit next to Bailey to ask
for relationship advice. I’m starting to worry about him.
- Shepherd really has it tough: his wife and girlfriend
kissed him in one day.
- Kalpana was the psycho woman on four who was
faking her sickness by taking pills. She supposedly had unexplained arithmias. She didn’t count on having blue urine
though, something that pill make you have. So Cristina was right about her.
- When Cristina was in a robe, Alex saw her panties.
Everyone started laughing at her while she was trying to cover herself up. I do love this show.
- Ellis didn’t allow Meredith to go into
her room. She says a child doesn’t belong on her team.
- Addison has the divorce papers. But surprise!
Derek hasn’t signed them. She is an adulterous bitch and maybe she is Satan, but I still love her.
- Addison seems to be a mutant. She even studied
the same things Bailey knows. What hasn’t she done?
- Alex failed a part of his tests. He’s not
considered a surgical resident. He can still practice medecine, though. Let’s hope he passes.
- He looked pretty angry about it too. When Izzie
went to kiss him, Alex pulled away and prctically pushed her to the door. Someone’s in a hurry.
- Mr. Lindel said he shot himself cleaning his
guns, but his wife was the one who shot him because he cheated on her. She shot him right in the head and he actually survived.
Now that’s woman with a few screws loose.
- It was funny to hear Cristina screaming to be
sedated.
- This episode was supposed to be the last episode
of season 1. They pushed all these episodes to season 2.
So will Derek sign the papers? I’m dying to know. 5 stars
