Don't Stand So Close to Me
Episode 3.10

Considering last week’s episode was exceptional, this week’s episode was really good. It was a much lighter episode and more or less a conclusion to what happened last week. Nonetheless, Don’t Stand So Close to Me had some great moments: Harold’s valve replacement, the scenes with Ellis, and the friends making up, among others. This was a nice way to end the year.

Although not a huge aspect of the episode, Izzie, Alex and George’s attitude towards Cristina for me felt important. These five are not really friends, are they? I don’t like that. For one, Izzie shocked me. Like Meredith said, Cristina helped to do Denny’s echo after Izzie had cut the LVAD. Did we all forget that? Izzie’s apology was underwhelming. It didn’t even look forgiving. For such a caring person, Izzie’s attitude was ridiculous. Was it bad writing or purposely written in? And it also feels like Izzie has alienated herself from Meredith as well. Every time I see Izzie, she’s hanging out with Alex. What happened to her talks with George? I miss those a lot. Believe it or not, Cristina is the one who’s always there for her friends. And they take it for granted.

George has to get a grip. He needs Callie back or something. He’s pissing everyone off. I was shocked when he decides to barge into Harold’s room asking questions he knows Cristina has covered. George’s scenes with his father are the best. When George walks by Callie, ignoring her, Harold unleashes. He’s appalled of his son’s behaviour: “You’re angry, Georgie. At Callie, at your brothers, at Dr. Hahn, at Dr. Bailey, at Dr. Yang, at Dr. Burke! That’s a long list of people to be angry at. Especially when the person you’re really angry at, is me.” I thought this was the best scene of the night. It’s true. George is angry. It might be because of his dad, or it might be because of Cristina. But right now, he is way out of line…with everyone. I understand his frustration with Cristina. She betrayed his trust and frankly, I’m disappointed with her too. That’s no reason to stay angry. And as I recall, Cristina wasn’t the one calling George 007. It was the rest of the hospital. That’s what I remember.

It seems as if we’ve just been blaming Cristina for this whole mess. Let me refresh all our memories: the center of this whole thing is Burke. We seem to forget that. Everyone is trying to pick a fight with Burke, and you know what, Burke has been the instigator in all of them. I understand Bailey’s frustration. She has a team to run. Why Cristina has no punishment is beyong me. Izzie has had to sit on the sidelines hoping someone will notice her. I’m proud of Bailey. She believes in fair treatment and I’m glad she gave Cristina the O’Malley case. That’s her way of punishing. Burke directly attacked her reputation. Of course she’s angry. She has every right to be.

Burke and Webber are also mending a tear in their professional relationship. In this episode, their relationship was not professional; it was personal. Dr. Webber wants to retire. He wants his wife back. He doesn’t want anymore of this crap. I loved the analogy he uses: Webber passed the torch to Burke. He in turn blows it out. So I’m guessing Burke is out of the running for chief. I guess that’s a fair bet.

In what also seems to be a growing significance to the show, Meredith’s family life drama hit an all-time high. Her step-sister Molly finally gave birth. Susan Grey couldn’t be more sweet asking Meredith if she wanted them to be her family. Meredith isn’t the type of person to forgive and forget. The Ellis scenes were fantastic. Kate Burton is an exceptional actress. I loved the last scene where she realizes Meredith is her daughter. Very touching and very real.

Dear Diary

Cristina: You know I’m sick and tired of this. Since when did I become the woman everyone pities. Meredith is trying so hard to help me and I thank her for that. I’m just not the person to graciously accept help. You know that. So Burke and I are hopefully going to try it out again. I went with him to his session with Shepherd. When can things just get back to normal? Izzie and Alex forgave me. Wow, I really felt the love there. George is still pissed at me, but it’s about time he got over it. He keeps staring at me and that’s just creepy. George is losing it. He barges into our prep for Mr. O’Malley and actually thinks I don’t have everything covered. I’m not an idiot or am I a killer. I don’t know what else to do.

Meredith: I watch my mother lie absolutely helpless in that nursing home. She couldn’t even remember my name. She didn’t know who I was. How can Ellis Grey just die the way she is. She looks dead. If that isn’t enough, Molly came in today to give birth. The baby couldn’t breathe and so we had a whole thing to deal with. Luckily, the baby is ok. I know Susan’s a great person and I know she wants to try starting some new relationship with me, but it’s not going to happen. She is the deal representation of what my mother should have been. I should have had a mother like her. I just can’t stand to be around them. I don’t know them; they’re not my family.

Today’s Baileyisms

-          “The Chief may be confused about punishment for you, but I’m not. You late again, you will find another resident.”

-          (about the interns) “You can have ’em all.”

-          “If you thumb suckers don’t stop whining I swear I won’t show you what’s behind this door and trust me, you want to see what’s behind this door.”

-          “Now which of you thinks Yang got the better case.”

-          You’re in that room as his son! If you interns think you can do whatever you wanna do, not any more! Not with me! Which is why you are going to stay away! 50 feet away to be precise! You are going to remain 50 feet away from your father at all times today! And Dr. O'Malley, do not make me tell you again.”

Quotable Quotes

-          George: “Your magazines?”

Mr. O’Malley: “Get ’em outta there so your Ma doesn’t see them?”

George: “Your magazines?!”

-          Cristina (to George): “Could you stop looking at me like that? It’s creepy and it makes me feel like you haven’t been fed.”

-          Alex: “I’m calling it. It’s mine.”

George: “I have two brothers. I feel their pain.”

Izzie: “I would be great at watching this.”

Bailey: “Zip it. All of you.”

-          Mark: “I am your attending and if you want in on my surgeries, you’re gonna learn how to fetch and stay and heel.”

-          Chief: “Dr. Bailey, Stevens is without privileges.”

Bailey: “Oh, ’cause she messed up? Dr. Yang messed up and she’s over in OR 2 right now. Stevens, I take it that you remember how to scrub in. C’mon.”

-          Derek: “It’d be nice if every love triangle could be fixed with a scalpel.”

Mark: “If they could, you would have stabbed me with a ten blade a long time ago.” I like how they both laughed after.

-          Bailey: “But I was responsible for Izzie Stevens. I was responsible and I’m responsible for Cristina Yang. I am the common thread here. I. Lost them, Cristina, Izzie.” Bailey has some soul searching to do.

Some Final Notes

-          It was heartbreaking to hear Ellis say she should never have had a kid.

-          Bailey was hysterical in Webber’s office. I loved the way she said, “I am fine.”

-          The Jake and Pete storyline was fantastic. They are conjoined adult twins. Jake was getting married to Elena and he didn’t want to be with his brother anymore. It turns out Elena loved Pete. So Jake gets angry at Pete. At then end of the day though, the two needed to be next to each other.

-          I like the fact that Izzie didn’t go get Sloan coffee. That’s the way it should be. She had to go the next time because she wanted in on his surgeries. I’m glad she tells him to do something worth respecting. And he does. She’s aloud in he surgery room after.

-          Webber was excited because he thought the surgery would bring in great press for the hospital. Him and the money.

-          George made a fool of himself in his father’s room. I like how Cristina said, “George I think you should step out.”

-          Addison thought it was a mistake to have Meredith in the OR. I don’t think she did anything wrong.

-          Molly’s husband is in Iraq.

-          Pete and Jake fighting each other was hysterical. I’m so morbid.

-          Izzie must have been ecstatic to be asked to come down and scrub in. I hope she’ll be treated differently now.

-          I also think Derek and Mark are going to make up soon. They can’t stay angry at each other that long.

-          I forgot to mention the scene in the scrub room where Burke describes to George what’s going on in the OR. Beautiful.

-          Meredith and Cristina are really sisters. Cristina should move in with them. Sleep on the couch or somethning.

Very good. 4 stars
