Drowning on Dry Land
Episode 3.16

Best. Episode. Ever. I’m serious. I am in total shock. What just happened? Did Meredith just die? Because if she did…that is going to be so twisted on so many levels. And totally genius. If she does survive, that will call for some amazing television. Both ways, it’s going to be great. I’m…speechless. That’s all I am.

You would think that after an almost flawless second season, an unstoppable Superbowl episode, a classic second season finale, two heart-wrenching love triangles, an intense arc of episodes in the first half of the third season that this show would just dry up. Are you insane? I am insane. This show is better than it’s ever been. I am not kidding. There were just so many great moments I can’t even keep track of them all.

Let’s deal with Meredith first. The episode began with a beautiful voice-over…just stunning. I loved the idea of hearing Meredith say she has so much more to say. Because she does. We haven’t heard half of what she has to say. But as she tells us, she disappears. Judging by the way she drowned, it seems like she went for suicide again. That’s what it seemed like to me. But she could have just easily drowned. It’s hard to tell and that’s what’s great about that scene.

They won’t kill Meredith. They can’t. But, someone will die. They’ve hyped it up too much. Someone has to die. I just don’t know who. I don’t usually get these things. I just want Meredith back alive and kicking. What’s so wrong about that? But it was great to see DENNY again as well as Donald Young from the Superbowl episode.

Finally, we got a lot more Derek this week. Patrick Dempsey did some great work. The scene in the ambulance where he’s doing CPR on Meredith was beautiful. Beautiful camera work and even better acting. This is going to kill Derek. Meredith better not die. His face just looked beat after he came out of the water. I’m glad they didn’t show scenes with him rescuing her in the water. That’s overdone and overrated. There was a much greater effect when he came out of the water and Lisa (little blonde girl) saw him. The editor used slow-mo to make it even more dramatic.

Say what you want about Addison and Mark (yes, they are sex addicts and they are at some times slutty), but they stick by their friends. Mark ran to sit next to Derek outside the trauma room. I think Derek really appreciated it. These two are great together and they still genuinely care about each other. It’s time they both move on.

And yes, I jumped of joy when Addison came in taking charge. I want a woman like that. There’s a distinct moment, after Addison comes in, where she and Derek share a special moment. Their eyes met and I think now we know why he married her. She rocks. Which woman you know would get so emotionally involved with her ex-husband’s girlfriend? Addison is going to be the won that’s going to save Meredith. When that happens, I’ll be even happier than I am now.

It seems like I’ve forgotten all about the other interns. Let’s start with my Izzie. God, I love this girl. And you know what, she kicks ass. Who else would be able to drill holes in someone’s head? I just loved watching Izzie happy about something again. This was more fulfilling than the clinic and she knows it. She’s a doctor again and it feels great. It felt like Webber was just shocked. He couldn’t believe that she could do this. This just proves how much talent Izzie really has. We always knew that. It seems to have finally paid off. She’s officially off probation. That’s great.

Her “I believe” speech was unexpected but just a joy to watch. This was perhaps the best scene of the night. I loved the effect it had on all the characters. She still thinks of Denny and she still thinks he’s with her. Why not? And she revealed that she ate a tub of butter and neglected to care about the amount of calories she was putting in her body. When you look like her, it doesn’t matter. Then, confronting George about Callie was beautiful. She’s right. She can tell him something like that without losing him as a friend. She didn’t make fun of Callie; she just stated her opinion. Loved this.

Alex is going through some life-altering experiences. He was the perfect person to be in charge of the patient’s families. He needs to learn about these things. I think that’s why the Chief chose him. He came up with a pretty accurate system and I’m just excited to see how all this is going to affect him. He was literally standing alone in a room of sobbing and crying. His growing affection for Elizabeth Reaser’s character, the burned pregnant woman, is going to be an interesting story. I’ve heard she’s sticking around for the rest of the season. This is going to get quite juicy.

I have to mention how much I loved Cristina this week. Every two seconds, she was asking where Meredith was. Meredith is her person and Burke doesn’t get that. He thinks Cristina needs her approval; she doesn’t. Meredith just needs to know. I loved the hug she shared with Izzie. What a great moment. Honestly, this is why a watch television.

Dear Diary

Meredith (what I would have written): I have so much to say. I just can’t. I’m disappearing. I just keep falling under water. There’s nothing I can do. No one can see me. I’m just dying alone. I’ve wanted to say so many things…to my mother…to my friends…to Derek. Now, my McLife is about to end and so many things are left undone…unsaid. I don’t have much time. Any second now. It’s been on hell of a year. I’ve shared many things with you and I’ve appreciated it. Things like this happ…

George: I promised this woman that I would get her son back. I lied to her so she can do the surgery. Now she’ll wake up and learn that not only didn’t I find her son, I lied to her. She didn’t die, but she’s going to want to die. This is such a nightmare. I went in to look at the morgue. There was actually a dead man lying on his back. Like what, they couldn’t turn him. Alex just stood there taking everything in. I can’t just sit here. I have to keep looking. This hospital is too big. Wait! I should check the OR board. Crazier things have happened. He could have been right in front of me all this time.

Today’s Baileyims

-          “So when she wakes up I have to inform her that she’s not going to die, but that she’ll want to die.”

Quotable Quotes

-          Meredith (voiceover): “Like I said, disappearances happen. Pains go phantom. Blood stops running and people, people fade away. There’s more I have to say, so much more, but... I disappeared.”

-          Izzie: “I believe that believing we survive is what makes us survive.” Nice one.

-          Alex: “I'd notice.”
Addison: “What?”
Alex: “If you went missing, I'd notice.”

-          Paramedic: “We've got a Jane Doe...”
Derek: “She's not Jane Doe. She's Meredith Grey!” This was intense.

-          George: “If I don't find this kid Bailey is going to change her son's middle name to Elvis or Tupperware, anything will be better than George.” This was good.

-          Cristina: “If I murdered someone, she's the one I would call to help me drag the corpse across the room.”

Burke: “Now you're likening someone here to a corpse. I'm done.” Uh-oh.

-          Izzie: “I need a drill.” She’s so hardcore.

-          Alex: “So tell me if you find a pregnant chick.” He’s so laid back about everything.

-          Meredith: “Am I dead?”

Denny: “Damn right you are.”

Meredith: “Holy—” Fantastic.

Some Final Notes

-          How beautiful was the voice-over? Best one I think.

-          We finally learnt the little blonde girl’s name: Lisa. How beautiful was it when she just pointed at the water. Great shot. Thank God she found her mother. I loved this girl.

-          George lied about seeing Mrs. Heit’s son. Who knew that he was with Callie? I loved that scene where he says he just wants to hug her. He says he’ll do something great for her at home. That was hysterical.

-          I like Addison asking herself the question that if she disappeared if anyone would notice. Alex obviously would.

-          Sydney tried offering Alex a hug. She has a tendency to say her stupid (but nice) comments at the wrong times.

-          Webber tried telling Izzie to calm down on the phone. Calm, she says, is long gone. She pulled it together.

-          Another Izzie moment (there are so many): she tells her patient’s (Rick) friend to shut up and call down. Katherine Heigl was great this week.

-          How cool were the Burr Holes? Izzie actually used a drill and made holes in someone’s head.

-          Alex’s system was smart. He’s got some brains.

-          Alex initially thought he found Jane Doe’s husband. His wife was dead. She was pregnant. That’s morbid.

-          I loved Izzie saying she needed to clean the drill one more time. She had cleaned it like twenty times.

-          Seeing Meredith all blue freaked me out.

-          I loved the scene where Izzie tells Cristina she was the hero of the day. Nice moment.

-          So has Burke called the wedding off? I didn’t understand how he meant the “I’m done.” I hope not.

-          “Drowning on Dry Land” is a song by Tab Benoit.

This is the best episode ever. I am not kidding. 6 stars.
