Staring at the Sun
Episode 3.8

We were all staring at the sun. We were happy that dark and twisty Meredith is gone. We were happy to see McDreamy in a bathtub with Meredith. We were happy to get George and the family back together. We were happy to see George confront Cristina about Burke. We’re all staring at the shiny sun. All happiness aside, this episode is setting up a lot of good things to come. This is exactly what I want to see. I have always been asking for the stories to pan out for several episodes. It happened with Denny and it happened with the quints storyline in the second season. Just great stuff.

T.R. Knight had the shot to shine this week and he did. George was at the center of the episode. I never knew how much I took George for granted before this episode. He is greatly underrated. George is completely different from the other interns. He comes from a different background. A really different one. Izzie came from a trailer park. Cristina has a mother who is obsessed with luxury. She forgets Cristina exists. Meredith has a competitive mother who cheated on her husband. George is really the only one who came from a loving family. Sure, his brothers are annoying and a bit stupid, but they have always cared for George. George’s dad is proud of him. Harold told him once that George is something his family has never seen. I just hope Harold doesn’t die.

Dark and twisty Meredith disappeared for a whole hour and returned at the end of the episode. Dark and twisty is what she does best. I’m happy she’s back with Derek. I don’t think this relationship is going to last long. It’s going to be on and off. The opening tub scene sort of symbolized a new relationship: everyone is happy. The closing tub scene symbolized an old relationship: everyone is not happy, but they are coping.

Cristina is getting beaten down like a dog. Things are starting to fall apart. George obviously knows Burke isn’t okay. Also, Bailey witnessed Cristina’s fight with George. This just adds to Bailey’s suspicions. She knows something is up. I absolutely loved both scenes where George confronts Cristina. I loved when George tells Cristina to be human. Priceless. I also think that Cristina, for the first time, realized how respected she really was. Everyone looks up to her. She knows she cannot afford to be responsible for Harold’s death. She also realized that she is a robot. She never makes a freakin’ mistake. So she acts human. She says George is the best intern in the hospital. Whether she believes it or not is irrelevant. Cristina is close to deciding who she wants to be. Is she going to be a power-hungry independent woman or a caring team member? The situation has now escaladed to a point where she regrets pushing Burke. The problem: there’s no turning back now.

This week’s obvious theme was motherhood and family neglect. Mia’s mother considered her job a means to an end: she also loved her daughter. She didn’t know her daughter’s favourite song or her daughter’s blood type. During Mia’s first surgery, Meredith comments on this. Bailey gets angry, obviously thinking that Meredith was implying that she should be at home with her son. I’m glad the writers finally used Chandra Wilson’s exquisite voice. The ending scene was perfect. I love this show.

Dear Diary

Cristina: George knows. Bailey is about to find out. Who was I kidding? How could I have actually thought that I could keep this from the hospital? I’m not worried about George. But what if Burke screws up in surgery? What happens is Burke kills George’s father in surgery. He will never forgive me. Why the hell did George have to assign me to this? Oh right, because I’m the best intern. Why the hell do I have to be the best intern? Have I become a robot though? I don’t know anymore. And Burke doesn’t even seem worried. I can’t fix this.

George: I don’t know what to do anymore. My dad is going to go through the worst weeks, my brothers are pissing me off, and Callie slept with Sloan. What is it with McSteamy? That’s not even the problem. I don’t know who to trust anymore. How can I let Burke operate on my father? I can’t. He’s my father. I don’t know what to do. What’s up with Callie too? I don’t need her talking to my brothers. I want her out of my life. Should I even confront her? Wait. Why do I care about Callie?

Today’s Baileyisms

-          “Don’t you think me reading it is more important than you reading it?”

-          “Family members do not treat family members.”

Quotable Quotes (there are a lot)

-          Meredith: “Today is the day people, today is the day when dark and twisty Meredith disappears forever, and Bright and Shiny Meredith takes her place! You're probably not gonna want to be friends with me anymore, because the sheer intensity of my happiness will make your teeth hurt, but that's OK, because life is good, life is good!

-          Cristina: “I'm scrubbing in on a surgery with Dr. Burke this Morning.”

Bailey: “Of course you are.” It’s getting obvious.

-          Bailey: “O'Malley!”

George, Ronnie, Jerry, and Mr. O'Malley: “What?” Loved this one.

-          Mark: “Ah, excellent. My invaluble intern. Is it "bring a hot blonde to work" day? No one told me.”

Izzie (laughs and feigns sneeze): “Sexual harrassment.”

-          George: “I can't believe you just decanulated a heart all by yourself.”

Cristina: “I didn't decanulate the heart by myself. I assisted Dr. Burke who decanulated the heart.”

George: “Why are you being modest? Modest looks weird on you.” It sure does.

-          Cristina: “Your dad better get something interesting wrong with him real fast.”

-          Meredith: “They don't know their kid's blood type. They don't know her favorite song. People want high power carreers, I get that. But they should think twice before having kids. [Bailey shoots her an offended glare] Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean that—”

Bailey: “What, that I should be home with my baby, instead of here with this girl and a surgical intern who can't cauterize the bleeders?”

-          Derek: “When you get divorced, doesn't that mean your wife is supposed to stop nagging you?”

-          Meredith: “Why bother even having a kid if you're only going to see it on weekends and holidays? You might as well just get a cat.” I laughed out loud.

-          Alex: “You ready to take out Frank's boob tube?” Loved this one.

-          George: “Do you know why I picked you to be my Dad's intern? Because you are a robot. You're a frickin' robot in a white coat who never makes a mistake. Most of the time I appreciate that, most of the time I really feel like I have something to learn from you, but right now...right now I need you to try, just for a minute, I need for you to try to be a human being.” Awesome quote.

-          Ellis: “Of course he has. He's afraid. Afraid to be happy. And now I'm all alone. Now I have to raise my daughter alone. How am I expected to do that?”

Meredith: “Mom, You did the best you could. You did the best you could, that's all anybody can do.” The actree who plays Ellis is excellent.

-          Cristina: “George is the best.”

Mr. O'Malley: “What?”

Cristina: “He's the best intern. He's a good doctor, and a good person, and...whatever happens, I just thought you should know that you raised a good person.” This was amazing.

-          Cristina: “George knows.” He sure does.

Some Final Notes

-          I laughed out loud when Bailey examined Harold. She yelled at George to tell him to shut up by yelling out, “O’Malley.” All four then reply. Great stuff.

-          I loved the opening shower scene where Meredith and Derek are using “seriously.” I miss that.

-          It was great to have Ellis back. We haven’t seen her in awhile. Chief Webber has decided he can’t see her anymore. I feel bad.

-          McSteamy is an ass. I loved when Izzie yelled out “sexual harassment.”

-          Frank, the patient with the fake pecs, was hysterical. I kept laughing every time he used the third person. It was even better when Izzie and Alex started.

-          Best Izzie Moment: touching Alex and Frank’s pecs.

-          Meredith criticizing Mia’s mom in front of Bailey was great. It was a good idea to show us Meredith’s point of view on family.

-          Chief Webber is going to try and men things with Adele. I’m glad. He deserves a second chance. I also think he should retire for her. It’s time.

-          Derek and Addison actually have a civilized relationship. I enjoyed their talk with the chief.

-          There were a lot of great little scenes: Callie, Addison, and Bailey had a great conversation about family and life moving on.

-          I really enjoyed Callie’s car analogy. How else would the O’Malley brothers understand?

-          I thought it was a bit much for Addison to throw her ring off the ferryboat. I know it has a significant meaning for her and her marriage, but it was useless. I still love Addison, though.

I can feel some good stuff coming up. 4 stars
