Episode 1.17

Beautiful. Just Beautiful. I love the Sun/Jin episodes. They’re sweet and it’s nice to really see true love. Did I just say that? Anyways, the episode was amazing. Jin is a multi-layered character who has lots hidden secrets. It’s great to watch him evolve. I’m completely surprised that he’s leaving Sun to go on the raft. I think that’s pushing it. Meanwhile, Shannon and Sayid are getting closer. The burning of the raft was a huge surprise; it was a pleasant surprise.

At first, I thought Jin was a sociopath. I thought he had grown to be cold and just evil. When I saw Jin’s end of the story, my view of him changed. He’s a troubled fisherman who’s trying to pursue a life he wasn’t meant to pursue. He’s trying to be an assassin. It doesn’t suit him. He has a good heart. He’s a good man. Somehow, Sun’s father changed him. He made Jin expose his dark side. He made him kill. I felt bad. I found the scene where he’s crying in front of the mirror to be really touching. I never cry and this almost made me cry. He was torn up inside. He did something he was ashamed of. It’s funny. He only beat a man up. Mr. Paik’s thug was going to kill the governor. He should be happy for what he did. He saved a man’s life, yet for Jin, he dishonored his family and his beliefs. Furthermore, he’s ashamed of his father. Jin even went as far as to tell everyone that his father is dead. Sun doesn’t even know the truth. On second thought, they don’t communicate well. Would it have killed Sun to come clean to Jin? What would he have done? Kill her? That was mean. The scene where the survivors had gathered around to watch Michael beat Jin, Sun finally told the truth. I thought Yunjin Kim was amazing. She was howling at Michael to stop. Although the episode belonged the Jin, Sun played a huge factor as well.

The episode was Jin’s version of “House of the Rising Sun.” It was great to watch the bathroom scene with Jin. We originally didn’t see him stare at himself in the mirror. I thought that was a huge element of the episode. It was also great to see where Sun’s dog came from. Jin had taken it from the guy he attacked. Furthermore, we learn why Jin and Sun were traveling to Los Angeles. He was about to run away with her just when she was about to run away from him. Sun says she stayed with him because he gave her a reason to. I liked the Jin’s dad’s advice. He looks like such a nice guy. He forgave his son in an instant. Then, he sounded so interested to hear about Sun. I like his father.

Can we please talk about Michael? What was his problem? Why did he have to accuse Jin? If he had looked at the facts, he would have seen that Jin was trying to rescue the raft. I was completely shocked when I learnt that Walt was the culprit. It makes sense. Poor kid had nothing else to do. He finally found a place he likes. He’s hanging out with his dad. He’s no longer moving. For Walt, this is like a vacation. He’s made some nice friends, notably Locke. They also had a nice conversation. Locke knew for certain that Walt had burnt the raft. I’m glad the writers revealed the truth; something they should do more often. Locke has this great way of being a peace-keeper. He came to the rescue when Jin was being hurt. He knocked some sense into the other. They aren’t the only people on this island. Although he doesn’t want to leave, he played that scene convincingly. He finally found a place he loves. We know he’s had a hard childhood, so is it wrong to enjoy the only place he really enjoys?

Spotlight on…Jin

-          Jin is speaking with Sun’s father. He’s telling Mr. Paik why he wants to marry Sun. We learn that Jin’s father is dead.

-          Jin goes to see sun on their wedding day. He tells her that he can’t go on a honeymoon. He told her to wait six months.

-          Jin meets with Sun’s father. Mr. Paik has promoted him as his special assistant. Sun’s father wants Jin to deliver a message to the governor of the Environment. The Message is: “Mr. Paik is displeased.”

-          Jin is having supper with Sun. He gets a call from her father. He is angry at him for not being aggressive. He tells him to return with his thug to deliver the message right. Jin saves the man by attacking him. This way, the man would not be killed.

-          Jin returns to his village. His father was never dead. He had been ashamed of him all his life. His father tells his to walk away from the life he has to start over with his wife.

Tales from the Island

Jin (translated from Korean): Sun knows how to speak English. Why didn’t she tell me? She’s growing further away from me than I thought. When did this happen. Is this recent? I thought she loved me. She then had the nerve to humiliate me in front of the others. They have been a bad influence on her. I’ve had it. I don’t want to look at her again. I thought she cared about me. How could she not tell me she spoke English? I have sacrificed everything to be with her. I was treated like a dog by her father all so I can wake up next to her in the morning. It’s disgraceful.

Quotable Quotes

-          John: “They've attacked us, sabotaged us, abducted us, murdered us. It's time we stop worrying about each other and worrying about them. We're not the only people on this island and we all know it!”

-          Sun: “I was going to leave you. I was going to get away. But you made me change my mind. You made me think that you still loved me! (In Korean) I want to go back to the begining. Can't we...just start all over?”
Jin: (In Korean) “It's too late.”

-          Locke: “Sure, you can yell at Boone 'til you're blue in the face, but all you're doing is giving him what he want.”
Shannon: “Yeah what's that?”
Locke: “Your attention.”

-          Sun: “My husband is many things. But he is not a liar.”
Sawyer: “You gonna lecture us about lying, Betty? From the look on his face (pointing to Jin) even your old man here didn't know you speak English!”

-          Sayid: “What was that for?” (talking about the kiss)
Shannon: “Everyone gets a new life on his island. I'd like to start now.”

-          Sawyer (to Jin): “It's 'Lord of the Flies' time now.” That was just plain mean.

-          Charlie (to Sun): “You speak English?!?”
Hurley: “Didn't see that one coming.”

-          Sayid (to Shannon): “Do you have a past in the Navy you've neglected to tell me about?”

Some Final Notes

-          The Shannon/Sayid relationship continues. I think it’s for her to finally let go of anything that might have happened to her. I also like her with Sayid.

-          Jin’s full name Jin-Soo Kwan.

-          I was disappointed with Jack. How could he let Michael beat Jin? He’s so much better than that.

-          Sawyer also pissed me off. What’s up with him sneaking up on a guy like that? Shame on him.

-          Locke said his father was not cool. He’s had a bad life. I can feel it.

-          I should have seen Walt burning the raft sooner. It makes total sense.

-          Locke has no intention of leaving the island.

-          Sun and Kate have really gotten close. I liked watching Sun finally bathe in her bikini. She finally let go.

-          Next week is Hurley’s flashbacks. Maybe it has something to do with his appearance in Korean television.

I loved this episode. Kudos to Daniel Dae Kim. 5 stars
