This episode could have been perfect. If there’s one
thing I didn’t like was the Jack flashback scenes. They just didn’t measure up to the last two. Apart from that,
the episode just kept on rolling. We’ve lost our first cast member, and we’ve gained a new addition to the island.
I’m glad we had such a dramatic episode. Somehow, I feel the end of the season coming. Noooo!
I’ll tell you why I don’t like Jack. He’s
kind of aggravating. He is not able to put his emotions aside. He took Boone’s death personally and made himself sick
over it. That’s not the way you do it. The flashbacks this week sucked. You got
married. Congratulations. The wedding moments felt forced and Jack’s conversation with his father felt unreal. All
his life, Jack has despised his father only to want him present at his wedding. Contrary to “White Rabbit” and
“All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues,” Jack’s past was pointless. It had no relevance in this week’s
episode. Consequently, it took away from the value of the episode. I found it interesting that Jack married one of his patients.
I can picture him a firm believer of “the fine line between doctors and their patients.” Sarah seems sweet though.
She’s got a good heart. In other words, she’s great for Jack. I don’t think Jack’s great for her.
I think Christian saw this. He gave it to Jack clearly: “If you love her, you wouldn’t be down here.” He’s
right. At times, Jack forced himself to love Sarah. That’s not how a marriage works. Like I would know!
Although Jack does have an obsession with fighting until
the end, I found it right to let Boone pass away. It was the right thing to do. Boone himself realized this. He was watching
Jack empty his own blood and it made him uneasy. A victim knows when their time has come; Boone knew it. He would surely never
recover on the island and he knew that time and effort would be wasted on him. Causing pain is something he didn’t want
his new-found “family” to endure.
Claire finally gave birth and Emilie de Ravin no longer needs
to wear that extra load of padding around her stomach. She was amazing. She played
a good pregnant mom. I particularly loved her initial unwillingness to have the baby. The baby was on its way to a new
family. She’s stuck with the child now. Yet somehow, that cynicism is gone. She wants the child. She wants her child.
Holding her baby created such a dynamic scene. Every character on the show seemed affected by the birth. It’s as if
this child belongs to everyone. He carries their hopes and dreams.
It was great to watch the other characters get a piece of
the action as well. Sun was great. I’ve always wanted her to interact more with the others. She finally found an important
role: she kept Jack going. I was kind of surprised by her abilities. Was she a nurse back in Korea? It would make
sense. I also enjoyed watching her disagree with Jack on cutting Boone’s leg off. Powerful stuff. Jin also got a few
nice scenes. The camera work while he was running in the jungle was beautiful. Excellently shot. I cracked a smile when he
hugged Charlie. Jin is no longer the enemy of the clan. Kate herself was convincing in the role of a mid-wife. She took a
deep breath and just delivered the baby. I love Evangeline Lilly more and more with each passing day.
Spotlight on…Jack
-
Jack is getting married. He’s having
a discussion with his groom.
-
Jack’s fiancé was in an accident two
years prior. Jack performed surgery on her. He saved her life.
-
Sarah joins Jack as they play the piano in
the hotel lobby. He explains that he hasn’t been able to write his vows yet. He’s still waiting for his father
to show up.
-
Jack is getting drunk in the hotel pool. His
dad finds him and sits next to him. Jack still hasn’t been able to write his vows.
-
At the altar, Jack improvises his vows. He
tells her that she fixed him.
Tales from the Island
Jack: Boone died. I did
everything I could. He died. I pumped him with my own blood and I kept doing it. Sun wouldn’t let me go. She didn’t
want me to cut his leg off and she didn’t want me to continue; she wanted me to let him go. I’ve never in my life
let someone go. But he was asking for it. He was a good guy. He tried his best to help everyone around here. And now he’s
dead. All because he got involved with Locke. I won’t ever forgive him. It’s time I go find him. It’s time
he gets what he deserves.
Quotable Quotes
-
Jack: “You know why they call it a tie? Because you have to tie it.”
Silverman: “You know why they call it a clip-on? Because you have to clip
it... on.”
-
Charlie: “That dilating thing. How do I look out for that?”
-
Jack: “You only asked four people?!”
Charlie: “I asked the whole sodding camp! Nobody knows their blood type! Most don't know their blood type!
I don't know my own bloody blood type!” I don’t know my own blood type.
-
Hurley (after seeing Jack give a transfusion): “Dude,
are you okay? You look goth.” I loved this one.
-
Jack: “Boone didn't die, he was murdered.”
Kate: “Where are you going?”
Jack: “To find
John Locke.”
-
Jack: “Hurley, I swear to God, if you faint-!”
Hurley: “No. First-class, mesh. I'm cool. Lord in Heaven...”
Some Final Notes
-
Jin is learning some English words.
-
It was great to watch Sayid seduce Shannon.
I’m really starting to like them together. It seems as if Sayid is scared to be himself around her.
-
I liked watching Sun place a wooden stick
between Boone’s teeth. There’s a huge difference between Jack and Sun. Jack believes in getting the job. Sun cares
for the individual himself.
-
Why does Claire think that “The Others”
did something to her baby? He looks fine to me.
-
What’s the new baby’s name?
-
The episode felt more powerful because we
weren’t in a hospital. Jack had to learn to do surgical procedures with the bare minimum.
-
Maggie Grace was excellent in the end. She
just let everything out. That’s the bst thing to do.
-
Jack is on his way to get Locke now. I don’t
think Locke did anything wrong. I hope this doesn’t end in a bloodbath.
Two for the flashbacks
and five for the island stuff, so I’ll give it four stars.
