I love the Kate episodes. Representing the male part of the
Lost fanbase, I absolutely love Evangeline Lilly. It’s not only because she’s
beautiful, she can also act. For starters, I still desperately want to know what she did. I’m sure it’ll be awhile.
Arghh! Also, the whole poisoning-Michael storyline was nice. I was surprised to find out that Sun was responsible. Anyways,
I loved the episode.
Kate’s story seems to get darker with every episode.
I was kind of disappointed by her when we learnt she gave Sun the idea to drug Jin. After all, she is a fugitive. She wanted
a way off the island, and she almost got it. I particularly liked Tom. He’s the guy who got mixed up with the wrong
girl. Kate is really the wrong girl. He was a hard-working doctor who didn’t
deserve to be torn again between his wife and his past crush. He loved Kate. Personally, it wasn’t fair for her to show
up like that. She broke his heart when she took off. She would have broken my heart too.
It was also kind of misleading when the show opened up with
a flashback. At first I thought it was nine o’clock and I was watching Alias. Then I
figured it had to be Kate. Her life is really complicated. She is always changing her license plates and she’s always
changing her hair colour. She’s receiving money from a person we’ve never seen as well as a letter attached addressing
Joan Hart. Furthermore, she learns that her mother Diane is dying of cancer. That’s why she returned to Iowa. Who was this mysterious source? Seeing Diane for the first time freaked me out. She looked like a zombie. I’m assuming this is her at her absolute worst. Was there a reason why Kate kept
calling her Diane with Tom? I just found that a bit odd.
It was fitting that Tom died during Kate’s escape.
He couldn’t last a second in her life. Why was he so stubborn? Why couldn’t he just get out of the car like Kate
told him to do? That frustrates me. I hate when the good guy dies. At least we know now where the toy plane came from. That
was Tom’s favourite toy. When they were kids, Tom and Kate buried a box filled with their favourite things. One of the
objects inside was a tape. Inside, Tom and Kate are talking about their future. From young, Kate was always looking to run
away from home. Tom always wanted to marry Kate. I particularly liked when people called her Katie. Katie was the innocent
Kate. Katie was the life she used to have.
I loved the island scenes this week. I don’t blame
Sun for worrying about Jin. She’s going to be alone. She’s right to be afraid. I don’t think Jin is angry
at her though. I think he’s leaving to find help. That’s just a hunch. Also, Sawyer was a jackss. When isn’t Sawyer a jackass? He crossed the line when he spilled the beans on Kate’s past. There’s
a line where Sawyer shouldn’t cross. I was kind of disappointed by him. He told Kate that there’s nothing on this
island for him. I guess he doesn’t love her. Walt also earned some points in my books. He told his dad the truth about
the first raft. I think Michael handled it well. His son has gone through a lot. He probably knows that this island is the
closest to a home Walt has ever had. Somehow, Walt knows there are bad things to come. He advised Locke to not open the hatch.
He also told his father they had to leave the island. What’s going on?
Spotlight on…Kate
-
A blond woman steps out of her car. She has
a trunk-full of license plates. She’s changing her present one. She walks into a motel room and takes a shower. The
woman is Kate. She is taking the blond dye out of her hair. She later goes to receive some mail. Inside were some money and
a letter. When she read it, she started crying.
-
Kate is bringing flowers into a hospital to
see a woman named Diane. She waits for an old friend in the back of his car. His name is Tom.
-
Kate visits Tom’s house. She asks him
“if it’s still there.” They go out in the middle of nowhere and start digging.
-
They find a box in the ground. Inside were
a basketball cap, a toy airplane and a tape, among other things. They listen to the tape. We hear the voices of two young
children. It’s Tom and Kate. Tom says he wants to marry her and she says she wants to run away.
-
Kate goes to see her mother Diane. Her mother
starts yelling for help and Kate runs out. During her escape, Tom gets shot.
Tales from the Island
Kate: What a jackass.
I was standing in the middle of some humiliating circle while Sawyer made a fool of me in front of anyone. He told everyone
I was the fugitive. He had no right to do that. I just want off this island. I was almost out too. I told Sun to poison Jin
so he couldn’t go on the trip. The plan backfired when Michael drank from Jin’s water bottle. Jack doesn’t
know what I did. I’m keeping it that way. He wouldn’t understand. He’s not the type of person to understand
me…or something like that. Sun kept my secret. I hope it doesn’t get out.
Quotable Quotes
-
Sun: “When I was a little girl, I believed that once I found the man I loved,
I would be happy...forever.”
Kate: “Yeah. Me too.”
-
Michael: “So when do we have to leave?”
Artz: “Yesterday.”
-
Sawyer: “Why are we listening to Artz?”
Artz: “Because I'm a doctor and you're a hillbilly.”
-
Sayid (to Jack and Locke): “You notice anything about this hatch? There's
no handle. Could the reason for that be more obvious? Maybe it was never meant to be opened from the outside.”
-
Kate: “Why is it so important for you to be on that raft?”
Sawyer: “Cuz there ain't anything on this island worth staying for.”
-
Charlie: “Okay, check this out...this is track two, its called (Clarie tries
to stop him from moving) sorry, its called 'Monster Eats the Pilot.”
-
Sawyer: “Don't worry pudding, your secret safe with me. But just so you know.
. . no way in hell you're getting my spot on that raft.”
Kate: “Hey,
Sawyer. I want your spot...I'll get your spot.”
Some Final Notes
-
It’s nice to see Charlie cheerful and
writing music again. He thinks his return to the normal world will be legendary. That’s fun.
-
I got a kick out of watching the Locke/Jack
scene when Jack first sees the hatch. Sayid’s face was priceless.
-
Something is going on with Walt.
-
Kate’s real name is Katherine Austen.
-
I’m glad Jack didn’t make a big
deal about Sun poisoning Jin. She didn’t know what else to do.
-
Did you guys see Shannon? She looks horrible.
-
Part 1 of the finale was aired with a two-hour
Alias. That was one of my favourite nights.
Solid episode. 4 stars
