Man of Science, Man of Faith
Episode 2.1

Stunning. Stunning. Stunning. Who would have thought that the tables could be turned as much as they were this week? This whole thing with the hatch has started off brilliantly. We started off with Jack flashbacks and I thought it was fitting. With the theme of hope thrown everywhere during the episode, Jack’s story reflected it beautifully.

Back when Jack was young (I don’t know how back it was), he was young and inexperienced. Being a man of science, he never believed in miracles. So when Sarah was brought in, injured with a broken spine, he knew he couldn’t fix her. But all it took was a bit of hope. I just loved these flashbacks. Sarah was obviously the woman that Jack is going to marry, back from season 1. So they got pretty close.

The intensity was there. When Jack learnt she regained feeling in her legs, he just broke apart; he fell for her. Thank God he did because that loser she was with was pissing me off. Who asks if his fiancé would be able to have sex after a car crash? What a jackass. So I’m guessing Jack’s relationship with this girl developed during her recovery. This should be very fun.

But the very best of this episode was the scene between Desmond and Jack at the stadium. There were so many questions brought out in that scene. How did Desmond get to the island? Why did he go to the island? WHEN did he go to the island? I need answers. So far, we know he was training for a competition to go around the world. What was this competition about? Something tells me we’re going to soon find out. Until then, I’m dying to know.

I think we have to talk about Locke. He’s officially lost it. I mean…what the hell’s his problem? Why is he so crazy? I loved the way Terry O’Quinn played Locke. You could see the madness in his eyes. His eagerness to get into the hatch was apparent and it drove the whole episode. This is a whole new ball game. Locke isn’t the one to depend on anymore. Can you imagine if he still was? Locke has gone places. He’s got everyone coming for him. Now he’s really put the island in trouble.

Can you read the excitement in my writing? I’m just about to burst with happiness. This season is looking to be great. Let’s talk about the hatch because I’m guessing this will be a major part of the season. There’s some computer in there that beeps. To stop the beep, you have to type something in. I don’t know what that is yet. What did he type in? And he pressed some button called “Execute.” What was that about? WHAT DID HE PRESS? Oh and on a further note. Why was it written “Quarantine” on the hatch door? If there’s like some freaky disease going around on the island…that’s going to be siiick. That would explain why Desmond injected himself. It seems like it’s all coming together. Wait, on this show, “coming” and “together” don’t match.

Also, getting back to the rest of the Losties, is it me or are they all going psycho? Charlie I’ve already decided I can’t stand. Who does he think he is spreading the word about Rousseau? I felt like hitting him. Meanwhile, Shannon’s going all zombie on us thinking she saw Walt in the forest. What exactly was he saying? And why was he appearing to her? And why is Vincent running away from her? Like as if she doesn’t have enough problems.

Oh! I forgot to mention how impressed I was with Kate. She’s finally leaving Jack’s shadows and doing something for herself. It’s impressive. What happened to her though? Is she okay? Locke said she was fine, but something says I shouldn’t trust him. Go figure!

Spotlight on…Jack

-          Jack is called in to save a woman who was in a car accident. She has a broken spine. Jack is able to stabilize her, but the man she hits dies.

-          Jack tells the woman that she is paralyzed and she virtually has no hope. His father wants him to give her some hope…any hope that she will survive.

-          Jack is speaking with Sarah’s fiancé. He seems disinterested just asking if he’ll be able to have sex with her. Jack tells him that Sarah will probably need professional help all her life. In the operating room, Sarah tells Jack that it will be okay if he can’t fix her.

-          Jack is running in a stadium. As he’s running up steps, he sees another man. He tries to catch up to him, but he falls. Jack talks to Desmond and the latter tells him to not lose hope. His name is Desmond.

-          Sarah came out of surgery. Jack thinks her spine is permantly damaged. He says he couldn’t repair it, but Sarah says she can wiggle her toe. She made it out fine.

Tales from the Island

Jack: We have a Locke problem. When I told him we were turning back, going back to out friends, you should have seen him. It was as if he heard the worst news possible. I can’t see how we can cope with him any longer. And now Kate seems to have played in his hands. She wants to go down to the hatch. She actually went. I’m stuck here with the others. I can’t just wait here though. I have to. I can’t stand the idea of Locke alone with her. I’m going to go. I have to.

Quotable Quotes

-          Hurley: “Great, go look in the burning death hole.”

-          Hurley: ”4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42. 4, 8, We're dead, 15, 16, 23, 42.”
Kate: “What?”
Hurley: “Oh....nothing I just...have to pee...”

-          Kate: “You left out the part where you wanted to see if I get eaten by something!”
Locke: “That too...”

-          Shannon: “I can't tell that kid that I lost his dog because I was exhausted.”

-          Hurley: “You should go ahead, man - don't want Locke making time with your girl. (Jack shoots him a look) Joke, dude.”
Jack: “I'm not really in the mood, Hurley.”
Hurley: “Really? Wow, usually you're, like, Mr. Haha.”

Some Final Notes

-          Sarah ran into Mr. Rutherford. I think that’s Shannon’s father. Don’t worry. I didn’t pick that off. I read about it.

-          Also, on the mural in the hatch, the number 108: if you add Hurley’s numbers, you get 108. Didn’t pick that one off either.

-          When Hurley is talking about his bad luck to Jack, he says Mr. Clucks got hit by a meteorite. When did that happen? I guess we’ll find out. I like how Jack just thought they were numbers. Typical Jack.

-          The bottle that Desmond used to inject himself had the numbers 4 8 15 16 23 42 on it. That I picked off.

-          I know what Walt said. He said “Don’t press the button, the button is bad.”

-          I loved the song “Make Your Own Kind of Music.” Supposedly it’s only played for 1:08 minutes. Where else does 108 show up?

-          Shannon looked horrible today.

-          I loved the scene where Kate goes to sit next to Jack. That made me think of the series premiere. Kate sure has changed.

-          How scared were you when the tree broke that was supporting Kate?

-          I can’t believe Desmond was the person in the hatch. Stunning.

Loved it. 4 stars
