I’m just exhausted. That’s
all I am. After this episode ended, I just sat back and closed my eyes for a few minutes. I relaxed…and then I got up
and was freaking out trying to go over everything that happened. You just can’t keep up. I have so many more questions
now which totally pisses me off, but on the other hand, the episode was just unbelievably amazing.
Let’s
do this one at a time because right now, my head is spinning. Let’s start with poor Des, who, with his little boat,
made it back to our island. He didn’t just sit on the beach and enjoy his alcohol. No way, he had to go and save the
world all over again. I found it very interesting that he was chosen to have the flashback this week. It made total sense.
He was the one that could have told us everything about the hatch. Yet he didn’t.
The hatch had so much history; he didn’t even begin scratching the surface.
We learnt enough though to keep us
satisfied for a bit. He got onto the island because he competed in a solo race around the race. The tournament was being organized
by Charles Widmore, Penny Widmore’s father. Penny is his lover. He wanted to win his honour back by taking the prize
of him. Sadly, he landed on a deserted where he spent the rest of his life (until now) pushing a damn button. That pretty much sucks. He meets a guy named Kelvin. This guy was pretty much crazy.
If you recall, Kelvin was the guy from
Sayid’s flashbacks. Anyway, for more on him, read the review of One of Them.
He joins the Dharma Initiative and here we are. Along with his suicidal partner, Radzinsky, Kelvin was in that hatch forever.
There’s a rich story behind both of them. This guy Radzinsky, the one who committed suicide, was the one who started
drawing the map on the blast door. This is the map of all the hatches. He is also the guy who edited the Orientation video.
Are we ever going to see the rest of it? Who knows?
For more on Kelvin, read the “Spotlight
on…” section, but let’s just say that he was planning to take off with Desmond’s boat. Desmond killed
him. Kelvin was in a different position than Des. He volunteered for this job. He was dealing with so many more different
emotions. He realized that HE messed up. He put himself in this mess. That’s
hard to deal with. He wanted to leave Des with all this responsibility: the responsibility he was left with after Radzinsky
died. There’s a particular scene that I loved. When he’s drunk and holding the key over the fail-safe, I felt
what that character was going through. He’s been debating all this time whether this whole Dharma thing has been worth
it. Was everything in the Orientation video true or was it a hoax?
That’s been the ongoing question
this whole season. The person who’s debated this subject in his head the most has been Locke. This was an important
episode for him. He earns my vote as the most interesting character this season. I
love the guy. He starts out the season as the faith-driven confident man. He ends it confused as ever. As the season progressed,
he realized that the hatch was as useless as his life. These are his words.
What was so hard to watch though was
him being wrong. He was so confident that this whole Dharma Initiative was a joke, that the button meant nothing. When the
hatch started going psycho, he realized he was wrong. When Eko wakes up, he sees Locke just surrounded by the flying objects.
All Locke had to say was: “I was wrong.” That scene just worked. The only thing that he’s ever believed
in didn’t turn out the way he expected. Now with the sky going all purple, what happened to Locke?
The hatch was definitely to talk of
the second season. After the episode ?, I started feeling worried that we weren’t
going to get the end this season deserved. The final scenes absolutely worked though. We know for a fact now that the hatch
was the real thing. The electromagnetic core started attracting everything. It was violent, dangerous and just plain scary.
Desmond decided it was time to use the failsafe. What was that loud sound and the purple sky? I’m dying to know.
What effects will the destruction (or
we don’t know yet) of the hatch have on everyone? Will it be a sense of liberation? Is this whole Dharma thing over
with? It better not be. I have a lot more questions. We all have questions that
need answers. Will this affect out Losties somehow? Charlie seemed weird. He seems
like he forgot what happened. Furthermore, what happened to Eko and Locke? See. There are too many questions that need answers.
Let me get to the part that really
had me going crazy. Our troops are traveling through the jungle and in a flash, they’re captured. I now hate Michael.
How dare he just walk away from his friends? I did enjoy him running away with his son though. They both looked so happy.
I’m happy for Walt. Can Michael really trust Henry with the directions to get out of there?
Yeah I was surprised that Mr. Henry
Weirdo turned out to be the leader. It still doesn’t make sense to me. Why would they have originally sent Henry Weirdo
to explore the Losties’ camp? I don’t think he’s the highest
they’ve got. There has to be more to this hierarchy. We know that Zeke (who’s real name is Tom) has some kind
of standing. We know Miss Klugh (who’s real name is Bea). She’s kind of the scientist of the Others. We also know
Alex who I’m convinced is Rousseau’s daughter. That was a bit too obvious
wasn’t it?
What are the Others? Who are the Others?
What do they want with the love triangle? That’s the only logical link these three have between them. Hurley was sent
back to deliver a message to the rest of the crew: don’t come back. I doubt our guys will just stay put. I just can’t
stand seeing them taken by the Others. Are they going to do tests like they did on Walt? It’s just that these Others
have been interested with kids all this time. Why do they want these three now?
I felt so bad for Hurley seeing him
walk off by himself. He wouldn’t leave either until Jack nodded to him. Hurley has been a very interesting character
this season. Falling in love with Libby opened his eyes to a whole different life. He learned to love…and to hate. Even
though he felt angry, he never dared hurting Michael. That’s not Hurley. For the first time though, he knows for a fact
though that evil does exist. And he’s in all this madness.
Some of our Losties are also on a boat
waiting to meet up with our troops. Sayid, Sun and Jin are going to receive an ugly surprise when they realize that no one
is showing up to greet them. Why would they? Sayid went ahead and scouted the place. The Others’ village was left deserted.
It was all a façade. Kate was right. Michael was fooled. Zeke confirmed it too by taking off his beard. What are these people?
More importantly, what’s going to happen to Sayid, Sun and Jin? Are they going to follow the trio?
Back on the mainland, with all of the
important characters either kidnapped, on adventures or just simply disappeared, Claire and Charlie are left with all the
other reject Losties. It seems they’re going to hook up. I’ve lost
all respect for Charlie so I can’t understand why Claire would kiss him. That’s not my business. We’ll see
what happens with them next.
I like how Desmond’s flashbacks
gave some light on the Libby dilemma. We’re definitely going to learn about her through other people’s flashbacks.
She was the one who gave Desmond the boat. Her husband died and he left her the boat. She really wanted to get rid of it.
My question is this: how did Libby end up in a mental institute? I guess we have to solve that.
As for why the plane crashed on the
island. Yeah, we might have figured that one out halfway through this season but the writers couldn’t have made this
more difficult. It was expected and this explanation made sense. That’s where
you stop. Desmond caused the crash. On September
22nd, 2004,
4:16, our Losties
made it on the island. It’s been sixty or so days since. If Desmond hadn’t followed Kelvin, they wouldn’t
have crashed. Was it fate or was it just something that happened? That’s up to us.
And lastly, Miss Penny has been doing
her own little thing since Desmond disappeared. Has she been trying to track him down all this time? Was she looking for this
specific place: the island? It’s interesting. Her two Portuguese men were looking for it. I don’t know where they were. Middle of nowhere. It’s going to be interesting though watching the
show from somewhere off the island. This can add a whole new thing to the show. I’m excited.
Spotlight on…Desmond
-
Desmond has
been released from prison. He is no longer needed in the army. A man comes to greet him. His name is Charles Widmore. He gets
into his car. This man doesn’t want Desmond around his daughter. He’s willing to pay him to make him leave.
-
Desmond meets
Libby at a coffee shop. He’s going to compete in a solo race around the world. He wants to win it from Charles Widmore,
Penelope’s father. She will give him his boat. Her husband died and she wants him to have it.
-
Des goes to
the stadium to have a run. Penny comes to see him and asks why he didn’t write to her. He asks her when her wedding
is. She hasn’t set a date yet. He tells her to wait; he’ll be back in a year.
-
Desmond is sailing
in a bad hurricane. He lands on a deserted island and sees a man in a yellow suit drag him into a room. The man thinks he’s
some kind of replacement. He says his name is Kelvin Inman. Des heard a beeping. Kelvin runs to type something in. The countdown
clock returns to “108”.
-
Kelvin is drawing
a map on a wall. Des asks about Radzinsky. Kelvin says he shot himself. Since then, he’s been alone. Desmond asks to
go outside. Kelvin won’t allow it. He has to stay in the hatch.
-
Desmond wakes
up and the computer is beeping loud. He finds Kelvin in a basement. He’s holding a key over a fail-safe switch. Des
asks about the hatch. Kelvin says there was an incident. A leak occurred and every 108 minutes, the charge keeps building
up. They press the button to discharge it.
-
Desmond notices
a tear in Kelvin’s suit. He follows him outside. Kelvin walks a while until he reaches a boat. It’s Des’
boat. He’s planning on leaving. Desmond gets angry and tackles him. He accidentally kills him. He returns to the hatch
and it’s a system failure. Metal objects are flying towards the wall. Desmond luckily stops it.
-
Penelope left
a note for Desmond in his Charles Dickens book. She says she will always love him. He starts going crazy. He then remembers
the first time he heard Locke screaming at the door. That was his renewal of hope.
Tales from the Island
No
memoirs have been found on the island. Waiting for further notice…
Quotable Quotes
-
Desmond: “This
is all there is left. The ocean and this place. We are stuck in a bloody Snow Globe.”
-
Desmond: “And
what makes you think I’ll run away?”
Charles Widmore: “Because you’re a coward.”
-
Charlie: “Black
smoke huh?”
Sayid: “This time, they will know we are coming.”
-
Eko: “Don’t
tell me what I can do.” This was similar to Locke’s motto.
-
Desmond: “I
shall win this race for love.”
-
Sun: “You’re
not leaving me Jin because I’m coming with you.” Excuse us.
-
Hurley: “Did
that bird just say my name?”
Sawyer: “Yeah, it did…right after it crapped gold.”
-
Penny: “With
money and determination, you can find anyone.”
-
Hurley: “I’m
not hungry.”
Sawyer: “You serious?”
-
Sayid: “I
don’t know what is more disquieting the fact that the rest of the statue is missing or that it has four toes.”
-
Desmond (on
pressing the button): “What was all about?”
Kelvin: “Just saving the world.”
-
Desmond: “We
just locked out a priest?”
-
Hurley (to Michael): “But if you did have time [to think], you still would have killed her right?” That was
tough.
-
Kelvin (on Radzinsky’s death): “The bitch of it was I only had 108 minutes to bury the poor bastard.”
-
Desmond: “I
think your friends just blew themselves up.”
Locke: “They’re not my friends.”
-
Desmond: “I
think I crashed your plane.”
-
Michael: “Who
are you people?”
Henry: “We’re the good guys.” Yeah, right.
-
Portuguese Guy:
“I think we found it.”
Some Final Notes
-
What’s
up with that four-toed statue? Why does it have four toes? And why did the writers bite off more than they can chew. This
might have been overdoing it. I’ll wait before I pass judgment.
-
So the notebooks
from the Pearl haven’t picked up for a while which begs
to suggest that Dharma is definitely off the island.
-
I’m guessing
all you gals went crazy for shirtless Sawyer and Sayid. Why can’t Kate and Sun ever go jumping in water?
-
Desmond said
he should have been in Fiji in a week.
-
Eko thought
kicking Locke out of the hatch would work. Guess not. I was hoping for more Eko in the finale, but what we got was good.
-
Desmond calls
the Others “the hostiles.”
-
Libby’s
husband named his boat “Eizabeth.” That’s slightly cliché.
-
Sawyer thought
that getting “caught in a net” meant something else.
-
Jack originally
didn’t arm Michael’s gun. Uh-oh.
-
Did that bird
really say Hurley’s name? Did that happen last season too?
-
Desmond told
Claire that the vaccine is useless. He says he didn’t get sick when he stopped taking it. Doesn’t surprise me.
-
There’s
a Dharma nutbar. They’ve got everything.
-
How great was
Kate when she completely turns the tables on those two Others in the jungle? She’s so great.
-
Sayid was praying
on the boat. I love how they keep religion strong on the show.
-
Eko threw Charlie’s
belt at the wall to prove to him that the hatch is real.
-
Eko tried using
dynamite to get the hatch open. That doesn’t work.
-
Why was Charlie
acting so weird?
-
I’m sure
I missed something. I apologize if I did.
Wow.
I’m exhausted. Sorry for the excessive review. Just an unbelievable episode. 5
stars obviously.
