Tricia Tanaka is Dead
Episode 3.10

Tricia sure is dead…because of a meteorite. Do I think that’s bad luck? Heck yeah I do. What are the odds? When that happens to you, then yeah you’re a jinx. I mean…come on. As for the episode, I loved it. It was a nice stand-alone all the while being hysterical. I couldn’t stop laughing.

There’s something about Hurley-centric episodes that just make me laugh so hard I think I’m watching an episode of The Office. Jorge Garcia had me going for the whole episode. I loved the flashback featuring Hurley as a young and skinny kid. As soon as he ate the chocolate…bye bye skinny Hurley. There’s nothing wrong with the way he is now. Just an observation. I’m so mean. Anyway, I loved the introduction of Cheech Marin in the show. I’ve always liked the actor and he did the part justice. Loved him to bits in this role.

Father walks away from home. Son makes a lot of money. Father comes back. Father’s got what’s coming to him. Nothing. As in Hurley isn’t giving his father anything. So this week’s flashbacks took place during Hurley’s first flashbacks between the time when he won the lottery and the time when he goes to Australia. This week, he decided to go to Australia. That’s when he heard about the numbers’ meaning. Seems like it was just yesterday eh? Boy, this show has moved on.

Kate, though, hasn’t moved on from Jack. She still deeply loves him and there’s no doubt about it. She resorts to asking Rousseau for help…with some incentive: Kate will help her find Alex. Rouuseau’s face when she hears this was priceless. Finally, after all these years (sixteen years to be exact), Rousseau will finally get to meet her daughter. I can’t wait to see that.

The obvious theme of the episode was hope. There’s no reason to live if you don’t have hope. This is what Hurley was fighting for. The bus gave him that hope that things would soon be different. No one might think about it, but that’s all anybody really wants. They all want some sort of hope. We all do. Don’t lie. Hurley was fighting for that. He would rather die than have no hope. That’s why he risked his life going down the cliff on the bus. Sometimes, you need to fight for hope.

Hurley’s story often focuses on luck. Does luck exist? That’s the main conflict in the Hugo flashbacks. But there is no such thing as a jinx. But when you experience everything Hurley has, it’s inevitable to believe in luck…or bad luck for that case. In addition to creating his own hope, he also made his own luck. Hurley’s father taught him that. His exact words were “in this world, son, you’ve got to make your own luck.” Hurley sure made his own luck. And did he. Finally. The bus had some great scenes. I loved watching the trio (later the four guys) clean it up and get drunk.

Charlie was very interesting today. No kidding he’s feeling lonely, but with a friend like Hurley, you can’t stay lonely for long. I hope Charlie cheers up and DOESN’T DIE even if I haven’t liked him lately.

Spotlight on…Hurley

-          Young Hurley is fixing a car. He doesn’t think it will work without a carburetor. His father tells him to have hope. His father tells him he has business in Vegas. David Reyes gets on his motorcycle and doesn’t look back.

-          Tricia Tanaka is filming a piece about Mr. Clucks. Hurley owns it now. She wants to visit the restaurant. Once inside, a meteorite falls from the sky and explodes into the restaurant.

-          Hurley tells his mother about the meteorite. She slaps him telling him there’s nothing wrong with him; he is not a jinx. She also tells him that his father has returned after 17 years.

-          Hurley is having dinner with his family when he tells his father to leave because he’s not giving him any of the money.

-          David takes his son to a psychic. Hurley realizes that his father bribed the woman to try and convince his son that he’s not a jinx.

-          Hurley is going to Australian and he tells his father that he will never get any of the money. He leaves for Australia.

Tales from the Island

Hurley: We got the bus to work. It’s working. I can’t believe it. Just when I thought I couldn’t be any more unlucky, with the help of Charlie, we got the bus to work. We went soaring down the cliff. I’ve never felt such a rush before and I’ve never felt so good. Finally, I feel happy again. I had fun. And I was so happy to see Charlie laughing again. He’s been moping around all this time. I mean I would probably to if I found I was dying but even if he is, which I don’t think he will, he should enjoy his final days alive. I’m just so happy we got it working.

Quotable Quotes

-          Hurley: “I miss you Libby.” Nice moment.

-          Tricia: “Why did you buy Mr. Clucks?”

Hurley: “I like chicken.” This was hysterical.

-          Carmen: “I have needs.”

Hurley: “No.No.No.”

-          Hurley: “Dude, even if you were speaking English I wouldn’t understand what you were saying.”

-          Sawyer: “If it’s hope you’re looking for, you’re on the wrong island. There sure as hell ain’t no hope here.”

-          David: “Your mother is a very passionate woman.”

Hurley: “That’s disgusting.” That is disgusting.

-          Hurley: “10000.”

Psychic: “Your dad put me up to it.” Didn’t take her long to change her mind.

-          Sawyer: “What’s up with Jumbotron?”

Hurley: “Shut up Red…Neck…Man.”

Sawyer: “Touché.”

-          Charlie: "Yeah, chase the dog with the skeletal arm into the creepy jungle. You be my guest."

-          Hurley: "Dude, Roger was on a beer run."

Some Final Notes

-          Hurley has still been thinking about Libby. Actually come to think of it, she’s only been dead for like two weeks. Time doesn’t pass fast on the island.

-          I loved seeing Vincent again. Of course, he had to have an arm in his mouth. Vincent should be in the opening credits. I have a friend who wants to watch the show just for the dog. I’m serious.

-          So the Dharma Initiative was planning on building a road of some sort. Very interesting. Roger was their van driver.

-          Hurley was so clueless during his interview with Tricia Tanaka. I loved it.

-          Why are Kiele Sanchez and Rodrigo Santoro on the show? What a waste of money.

-          Kate wanted to start again with Sawyer on their way back to camp. Sawyer has nothing to start over for. He’s fine with just the way things worked out.

-          I loved the scene where Kate and Sawyer returned. Everyone was so happy.

-          Sawyer said that the island reminded him of “Little House on the Prairie.”

-          Hurley and Jin trying to communicate was great. Sun has taken it upon herself to only speak English to Jin. He doesn’t like it.

-          Sawyer was steaming about losing his stuff.

-          Hurley bribed Sawyer with beer. That really does work doesn’t it? How weird was it to see Sawyer back in his tent?

-          Jin gave a flower to Sun. Aww…that’s sweet.

-          Sawyer kept the beers of course. Hurley says those beers have been there since Rocky II.

-          Rousseau is back with our Losties. Was it me or did she look extra wild today? She scared me even more than usual.

Nice stand-alone and just a beautiful performance by Jorge Garcia. 4 stars
