Not in Portland
Episode 3.7

Lost is back! Wooo-hooo! And did it ever. What a strong and captivating episode. I just realized how much I love Juliet and I just realized why I loved the show (why it took me so long I don’t know). We got some beautiful action scenes, some tear-jerker moments, and an all-out splendid performance by Elizabeth Mitchell.

Finally, we’re getting some answers. Here I thought Juliet was born on the island but where she was really born was in Miami. Three years, 2 months and 28 days ago, she used to live on the beaches of Miami. Now she’s stuck on this remote island with the psycho Others while the whole world shatters in front of her. We knew she was a fertility doctor, but we didn’t know she was that much of a genius. A serious genius. She was able to impregnate a male field mouse and her sister. Now, I’m guessing her sister has some type of cancer because she doesn’t look too good. But what a serious advancement that is. What I loved about Juliet’s flashbacks was the way the recruiting process for the island was shown. It’s safe to assume that Mittelos Bioscience is not related to the Dharma Initiative. It can’t be. These guys look pure evil and so do the Others. The Dharma Initiative guys weren’t. I don’t know what to think. Are the Others part of the Dharma Initiative? I don’t have a clue.

But, the flashbacks this week were more than the mythology of the show; they were about Juliet. Back in Miami, Juliet was a vulnerable woman. She was sincere, as well as a genuine human being. On the island, this girl is hardcore. Freakin’ scary. You know when she’s got that look in her eyes that she means business. It’s great to see that kind of character development. We have a totally different Juliet now.

Wait a second! I just got it! Did Mittelos Bioscience kill Ed so they could get Juliet? Seriously? I think that’s it. At first I thought it was fate, but it couldn’t have been. They caused the crash. Or am I totally wrong?

Speaking of difference in a woman, Kate was freakin’ insane. My love for her is on another level. To see her go into action like that…I was yelling. But she definitely still loves Jack and I know she does. I don’t think she wants to be with Sawyer. I know…I can’t believe I said that. But seriously, she has shared so many more adventures with the doctor. How about the best scene of the night when Kate recounts the story Jack told her about the count to five. Evangeline Lilly just delivered. What a powerful scene. And there’s no way she’s not coming back. The second she gets back to their island she’ll be ready to save Jack. I’m looking forward to this.

Alex rescuing the couple was great. She has her mother’s fire and yeah, she’s without a doubt Danielle’s daughter. How she thinks she’s Ben’s daughter I have no idea. But what was going on with Carl? Was he getting hypnotized or something? What he was going through reminds me a lot of what they do in cults to recruit members? Especially the part where the slideshow said “God loves you as much as he loved Jacob.” That’s very cultish. How I know these things…don’t ask. But is it possible that all the Others went through this brainwashing program? It wouldn’t surprise me.

Spotlight on…Juliet

-          Juliet is sitting at the beach. She gets up and enters this research facility where she walks past Ethan. It seems like she doesn’t know him. She enters a room where she sees her sister. She looks like she’s had cancer. Juliet injects her with a fluid.

-          Juliet is sneaking bottles of fluid from her lab into her bag just when her ex-husband Ed walks in with another woman.

-          Edmund wants in on Juliet’s private experiments. He knows she’s been working on her sister.

-          Mittelos Bioscience wants Juliet to join them in Portland. They seem very interested in her work. She says she can’t go; Ed wouldn’t let her. They know she impregnated a male field mouse. She won’t accept.

-          After taking a pregnancy test, it’s confirmed: Juliet’s sister is pregnant. Excited, Juliet goes and tells Ed. Just when she reveals her discovery, Ed gets hit by a bus.

-          While signing the papers to release Ed’s body, Juliet is paid a visit by Mittelos Bioscience. She blames herself for his death. They know her sister is pregnant. Lastly, they tell her that they’re not exactly in Portland.

Tales from the Island

Juliet: He promised to let me go. He said I could leave this place if I went to save Jack’s friends. That’s what he told me. I’ve been on the island for 3 years, 2 months, and 28 days. I have to leave. I don’t know how my sister is doing and I don’t know how the baby is. Is it healthy? I kept remembering today everything that happened with Ed and how they recruited me. It’s been such a long time that it feels like I’ve forgotten Miami. If I get the chance to leave the island, I’m taking it. I’m not waiting any longer.

Quotable Quotes

-          Kate: "We need a boat."
Sawyer: "Yeah. And a couple of towels and a buffet lunch."

-          Sawyer: "Don't get mad at me just because you were dumb enough to fall for the Wookiee prisoner gag."

-          Kate: “That's our island?”
Sawyer: “What, you didn't believe me when I told you before?”

-          Sawyer (to Alex): “Okay, Lollipop, you want to tell me how we're going to get by him with one gun and no bullets?”
Kate: “I've got an idea.”
Sawyer: “Of course you do.”

-          Jack: “So what now? I just go back to my cell?”
Juliet: “Until they figure out what to do with you.” What else would they want from him?

-          Jack: “Promise me that you'll never come back here for me. Don't come back, Kate.” Oh she’ll be back.

-          Sawyer (to Alex): “So, you're the bosses daughter, huh? I never saw that coming.” He just seemed fascinated with her.

-          Sawyer: “Why don't we just stop and ask for directions?” Good idea.

-          Kate: “Are you okay?”
Jack: “I'm fine.”
Sawyer (to Kate): “Tell him I said hi...get to the point!” Loved this one.

-          Sawyer: “Is that a hobby of yours, Underdog? Digging holes?”
Alex: “Yep. That and basket weaving. Want one?” I like the attitude.

-          Sawyer: “Damn good con, Freckles. I almost believed you were gonna shoot that boy.”
Kate: “It wasn't a con.” I’m sure of it.

Some Final Notes

-          Did I mention how much I loved watching Kate kick ass? That fight scene in the prison cell was beautiful like Sydney Bristow in action.

-          I liked how Juliet didn’t think Jack would kill Ben. I don’t think so either.

-          Jack told Zeke/Tom that Juliet wanted Ben dead. What was the point?

-          The action scenes in the jungle were amazing. I want more.

-          Alex has a nice pastime: building holes in the ground. Like I said, she’s exactly like her mother.

-          Zeke was hysterical this week. I loved when he introduced himself to Jack out of nowhere. So much fun. Also, like Hurley, he can’t look at blood.

-          I almost forgot: Juliet smoked Danny. Down! Finally! Like I said, Juliet is hardcore.

-          Why did Alex have to stay? What the hell is Juliet’s problem with not letting her go?

-          The five seconds of fear was excellent. This scene as well as the scene in the pilot are classic scenes. Love it.

-          We had another mention of Jacob this week. He is definitely their leader. He has to be.

-          Juliet’s last name is Burke.

-          Supposedly, if you play the brainwashing recording backwards, you can hear a woman say "Only fools are enslaved by time and space."

-          There is also a picture of Alvar Hanso in the slideshow of the brainwashing scene. I didn’t see that. Are you crazy? Read it somewhere.

-          Previews for next week look great. Kate is coming back to the island. And I saw a lot of shooting. Nice.

Edge-of-my-seat fun and non-stop surprises make this episode a five. Do we disagree?
