The Box, Part 1
Episode 1.12

I love that of all the father/daughter activities in the world, Sydney and Jack chose to save SD-6. This family definitely has issues, but that’s their cover. They have to maintain a low profile at SD-6, meaning, they have to save it in case of an attack. It was fun seeing Jack and Sydney argue over who’s going to get the scrambler. That was a nice father and daughter moment. Quentin Tarantino was fun as usual. He can really deliver when given a good role. He plays McKenas Cole as the ex-SD-6 agent abandoned by Sloane during a covert operation out in the middle of nowhere. The episode was great.

I was bit surprised with the lack of security in the “Credit Dauphine” building. SD-6 fell victim to seven people in a matter of ten minutes. I’m sure Sloane will have that corrected if he survives today. This group has been sent by The Man to steal something stored in the SD-6 vault. They’re trying to break the code in order to enter into the vault, but Sloane enabled a failsafe. In the event that the vault were to open, the lower levels of Credit Dauphine would be eliminated by the various installments of C-4 strategically located throughout the lower levels. We’ve got a major problem on our hands. Sydney scrambled the code just in time, and McKenas Cole is left with nothing. Unfortunately, they have the equipment to crack the code. It will only take time. Time that Sydney and Jack wished they had. It was great seeing the two of them bonding. Jack was smart when he caught Marshall’s attention with the flashing light. Dixon tried faking a seizure, but the he was soon taken care of. Marshall himself desperately tried to help, but he got hit by one of the attackers.

Sloane really is brave. He’s not the cowardly twit we’ve made him out to be. He stood up to McKenas Cole and insulted him. “I can't be the first person to have difficulty taking you seriously, can I?,” Sloane says. That really triggered Cole to come all out. He took out this box full of needles. “The Needles of Fire” he calls them. I freaked out. I was actually rooting for Sloane. First time ever. I can understand Cole’s hatred toward Sloane. Sloane sold him out and Cole was stuck with the Russians. They tortured him and interrogated him. That’s where he learned of The Box. I’m guessing that’s where the title of the episode comes from.

Will is not able to give up this case. That journalist’s mind is unable to grant him the gift to look the other way. He needs to know the truth. I hope he doesn’t get David McNeil’s daughter killed. I’m worried by the way. I always worry. Now we know it’s not Jack making those phone calls. He was in the elevator the whole time when Will received the telephone calls. Who is this guy?

Syd’s Tips

-          When wanting to escape from your attackers, hide in the vents. Try and make minimal noise.

-          When wanting to attract a metallic object from a table, use a magnet and “fish for it.” This method should only be used only in the case that you are stuck in an impossible situation. You are not able to show your face. Extreme control and balance is needed.

Quotable Quotes

-          Sydney: “Even her wanting a family? Or was that just part of the plan too?”

-          Sydney: “The truth changes everything.” It sure does.

-          Jack: “If K-Directorate attacked SD-6, they know SD-6 will return the favor.” I like that.

-          Cole (to Sloane): “Your hair looks good.” I loved this one.

-          Sydney: “You’re gonna have to crawl through a maze of air shafts, get to Marshall’s office, get the scrambler, get to the vault room, and scramble the code all under ten minutes. No offense, but I am doing this.” You go girl!

-          Sydney: “I can’t believe, of all things, we’re saving SD-6.” Me neither.

-          McKenas Cole: “You give us the codes, I won't have to open the box which will be really excellent for you.”
Sloane: “I can't be the first person to have difficulty taking you seriously, can I?” I had to repeat it. It was so good.

-          McKenas Cole: “Each one is like you took a bag of red jalapenos, threw them in a blender, and used them for an enema. And Arvin, you're about to get to know them.” Scary.

Some Final Notes

-          Vaughn really got close to Syd. He actually hugged her. And I think he feels bad for pursuing the codes in those books. I hope their relationship doesn’t get awkward.

-          Agent Haladki is a big pain. When Vaughn confronted him, it made my day.

-          Weiss was hysterical in this episode. I like how he told Haladki that he wasn’t invited to go to lunch.

-          I get a feeling there’s so much to know about Sloane’s past. I hope we can explore more.

-          I wonder what’s up next.

-          Cliffhanger: Sydney’s stuck in the SD-6 air vents over the vault room while Cole is shooting at her.

Excellent. 4 stars
