As We Know It
Episode 2.17

I can’t believe this two-parter is over. What a stunning way to end such a stunning story in such a stunning display of performances. I like the word “stunning” all of a sudden. The action just kept coming our way. It picked up right where we left off and gave us a stunning and just SHOCKING ending! And finally, Bailey gives birth to her son. We’ll have the old Bailey back soon.

I don’t know how Meredith held herself together through all of this. She was about to lose it as well, but she miraculously kept it together. She envisions McDreamy in front on her. She’s crying. She wants to leave. This is ridiculous. How is she going to be able to put her hand around an explosive? She does it, though. Crying, she yearns for McDreamy. The tension is mounting and Meredith learns that the main oxygen line is under the operating room. In other words, if it explodes, the whole hospital blows up. I would never be able to have that pressure on my shoulders. I can’t believe they made Burke move the body. That must be one of the most insane things I have ever seen. I thought something bad was going to happen when the bed hit the bump in the hallway. There were a lot of these moments.

I really enjoyed the conversation Meredith had with Cristina while the bomb squad is wheeling the bed in the hallway. Meredith needed to hear anything that could brighten her day. Now we know why Burke was acting all weird about last night; he told Cristina he loved her. Cristina was up to hear it. That’s something Cristina would do. So she tells this to Meredith. And guess what, Cristina loves him too. This couple sure has come a long way. Let’s see where it’s headed.

Dr. Webber finally lost it today. He couldn’t handle the stress anymore. He has an anxiety attack and Adele is called to the hospital. Beware when the wife comes to the hospital. He sure had a lot of problems: his favourite resident wasn’t pushing, the hospital could blow up at any second, his two best surgeons are at stake, he has a paramedic missing, and his intern has her hand stuck in a man’s body. Things cannot get much worse for the chief. He did make a speedy recovery. But Adele didn’t look too happy. I’m sure she wants him to retire.

After being a bit shell-shocked from her husband’s surprise accident, Bailey refuses to push. She’s refusing to push. Our Bailey is refusing to push. But Bailey was definitely not ‘The Nazi’ today. It was odd to watch Bailey be completely oblivious as to what’s going on outside her room. She’s usually the one running the hospital. But George really impressed me. After being violently trashed by Addison (she was also feeling stress), he realizes that he has to try something by himself. He went into her room and stated his disgust in her attitude: “Dr. Bailey I’m surprised at you. I really thought—this is not how I thought you would do this. I truly...I expected more. You’re Dr. Bailey. You don’t hide from a fight. You don’t give up. You strive for greatness. You, Dr. Bailey, you are a doer. I know your husband’s not here, and I know there are a lot of things going on here that we have no control over. But this? This–we can do. OK? OK. Let's have this baby.” I thought this was a beautiful moment. And Bailey really responds to this. She knows she’s doctor Bailey. She knows her husband is in surgery. She has to do it for him. I loved this moment. If Chandra Wilson doesn’t win the Emmy award, I will hunt the voters down.

Dear Diary:

Meredith: I stood over Mr. Carlson’s body with my hand in his chest. Yeah, what did I think I was doing? I asked myself the same question when I decided to throw my hand in there. But I survived. We all survived…except for Dylan Young. He was the head of the bomb squad. He was a real ass, but he guided me through the whole thing. He told me to envision Derek in front of me. As I follow him out of the OR, he just explodes. I guess the explosive wasn’t as stable as I thought it was. Next door from me, Derek was in there performing brain surgery on Bailey’s husband. And all I can think of throughout this whole time is when I had last kissed Derek. I couldn’t remember. That night, he came over and told me that it was a Thursday afternoon and I was wearing a ratty t-shirt with a hole on the back. He was late for work. And that was the last time we kissed. I can’t believe it.

Cristina: I was lying last night in bed. I had my eyes closed and Burke told me he loved me. He doesn’t know I wasn’t sleeping. So I told him I loved him when he was sleeping. Where is this going? I really have feelings for him. I love him. And if yesterday couldn’t be any worse. Meredith was in the OR with Burke. She had her hand in his body. She stayed with Burke the whole time. I was in the neighbouring room trying to save Bailey’s husband’s life. The hospital was a mess. I couldn’t just leave Burke alone. I told him I wanted him to be the other guy—the one who runs the other way at the face of danger. I didn’t want him to be the hero. Thankfully, he made it through. Meredith almost got killed but everything is fine.

Today’s Baileyisms

-          “Stop looking at my vah-jay-jay.”

Quotable Quotes

-          Meredith: “OK, you know when you don’t need to be made fun of? Like when you have your hand inside a body that’s got a bomb in it and a stranger is Velcro-ing a flak jacket to your boobs.”

-          George: “I mean, can’t we force her to push? If, uh... we declare her temporarily insane?”

Addison: “You want me to declare Miranda Bailey—Miranda Bailey—incompetent? Do you think that’ll help, make her more inclined, more comfortable giving birth?”

-          Burke: “I cannot do this with you in here. I cannot think.”

Cristina: “You know in movies how the hero and there’s always the other guy, the one who sees danger and runs in the opposite direction?”

Burke: “Yes.”

Cristina: “Be the other guy.”

-          Izzie: “I laugh at funerals.”

Alex: “I don’t go to funerals… Izzie, Iz—”

Izzie: “I was jealous, I was jealous of Meredith in the surgery and I was jealous and now, now who’s jealous Alex.”

-          Shepherd: “I’m just saying I don’t want to be the guy that killed Bailey's husband.”

Burke: “I’m just saying I don't want to be the guy who kills us all.”

-          Meredith: “Is this the strangest thing that’s ever happened in your OR?”

Burke: “I’d have to say it is.”

Meredith: “Good because I'm very competitive.”

Burke: “All the best surgeons are.”

-          Alex: “Who’s gonna tell him?”

Izzie: “I gave you sex in the linen closet, you tell him.”

Alex: “Fair enough.”

-          Cristina: “You had to say you’re going to die today.”

Meredith: “I told you.”

Some Final Notes

-          Burke wanted Cristina out of the OR. He said he couldn’t function with her there. I can understand.

-          I liked Cristina telling Burke not to be the hero, but to be the guy who runs away.

-          Izzie is werd in stressful situations; she laughs. When she hears Meredith can die, she starts laughing. I’m the same way. Yes, I’m weird too. I don’t laugh at funerals though.

-          Alex and Izzie had sex a few times this week. I guess they were trying to make up for lost time.

-          When Dylan whispers with Burke, Meredith asks them to stop whispering. She’s not a patient; she’s a woman with her hand in a guy’s body.

-          Meredith says she looks at “glass half-empty” these days.

-          Adele told Dr. Webber he’d have to tackle her to get her out of the way.

-          Addison went completely psycho at George. I can understand. He can say the stupidest things sometimes. There I have to agree.

-          George finds Hannah in the staircase. That’s a girl who was going through hell.

-          Meredith told Dylan she hated him.

-          Cristina told Derek that the girl with the bomb was Meredith. Why did she do that?

-          Derek punched Tucker so he could stay alive.

-          Burke and Shepherd finally call each other by their first names.

-          Mr. Carlson lived. Burke told Mrs. Carlson to thank Hannah. This poor girl has not been acknowledged at all. She did save his life.

-          Adele knows that Derek wasn’t looking for Addison. She knows everything.

-          It’s funny but there was an ending shower scene as well. The first shower scene in last week’s episode is a dream where George sees the three soaping each other. This week, Izzie and Cristina are washing Meredith. They aren’t having fun; they’re helping her. George witnesses both. This is the difference between dreams and reality. That was a fun thing to notice.

-          Bailey names her son William George Bailey Jones.

-          Derek couldn’t remember what Meredith’s hair smelled like. It was lavender.

Excellent. 5 stars
