Raised by Another
Episode 1.10

Amazing! Could this episode be any more perfect? Emilie de Ravin is excellent and I really got a kick out of her performance. She got some great things to do this week as Claire comes closer to giving birth. Sayid has returned with a message for the rest of the survivors. They aren’t alone on the island and we know this for sure. Also, after Hurley had found the flight manifest, he realizes that Ethan Rom was not on the plane. The same guy then had this weird look on his face when it looked like he was about to attack Claire. Unbelievable!

I am stunned with what the writers have done with Claire. I am jaw-dropped. If you read this, I’m sure you’ll all notice how hyper I am. I just loved this episode. The episode opened up with Claire’s dream. I was so freaked out. First we saw Locke with black eyes telling Claire she should never have let him (we don’t know who he’s talking about) go and then we see a crib filled with blood. Did you all notice that the toy planes were toy models of Oceanic Airlines? I’m so proud of myself for noticing that. Claire then wakes up screaming. I mean she was screaming. In her flashbacks, we learn that she has a baby with this loser boyfriend who walks out on her. He enjoyed the idea of having a baby rather than the reality.

Claire was into astrology. Her friend brought her to a psychic and this is where the problems began. He warned her that danger surrounds the baby. She had to raise it by herself. I loved how Claire and Charlie deduced that the psychic must have known about the plane crash. It makes sense. Why else would he urge her to leave on Flight 815? He wanted her to crash on the island so she can be with her baby. Claire has had a tough past. She has this useless $5/hour job at some dinky restaurant and the man she lives with is an unknown painter. She lives in a one-room apartment and her mother has practically disowned her. No wonder she’s fed up of being treated like a kid. I’m glad she snapped at Jack when he tried giving her sedatives. As it turns out, I don’t think she was hallucinating. She’s pregnant for goodness sake’s, not psycho! I liked how Charlie tried consoling Claire. He’s a good guy. I liked how he started rambling about his drug addiction when he started panicking. So what happened with Ethan? Is he going to hurt them?

I liked how Hurley went gallivanting around the island trying to find information on people. That was fun. I would never be able to keep track of anyone I’ve spoken too. It’s too much work. It was a great idea though. I had a great laugh when Hurley went to confront Sawyer. You can’t ever be angry at Hurley. He’s such an innocent and hysterical guy. He’s my favorite on the island so far. Jack doesn’t seem too convinced about other people living on the island. It’s a coincidence that at the exact time Sayid came back, Hurley ran in with news about Ethan. This is just great tv.

I had a problem with Jack this week. Why is he so quick on giving a scientific explanation to every happening on the island? He completely dismissed Claire’s attack as a hallucination. I hope he turns out to be wrong. He’s used to always being right and it’s time he gives someone else the chance to speak. I’m glad Charlie started yelling at him when he accused Claire of making the whole thing up. Why would Jack even tell Claire about his suspicions? He always has to be right.

Spotlight on…Claire

-          Claire learns she’s pregnant. She lives in a one-room apartment. She has a $5/hour job at a local restaurant. Her boyfriend is a painter. She thinks they’re not ready. Her mother has practically disowned her and she says a baby is the last they need.”

-          Claire visits a psychic. He knows about the baby, but he refuses to reveal a dark vision he saw.

-          Thomas cannot handle the child. He says he can’t deal with the realty of a child. He dumps Claire and tells her he wants nothing to do with the baby.

-          Claire goes back to the psychic. The psychic tells her that danger surrounds this baby. He says she must raise the baby herself.

-          Psychic calls her many times throughout the next few months. He keeps advising her to keep the baby. She says she’s calling Adoptive Services tomorrow.

-          Claire meets with couple. She walks out unable to give away her child. She returns to the psychic.

-          Psychic tells her to take the baby to a couple. They are good people that live in Los Angeles. She can only go on Flight 815.

Tales from the Island

Claire: He knew. He knew. He told me to go to LA because he knew the flight would crash. He knew I would be stuck on a deserted island. This is what he wanted. He wanted me to raise my child alone. This was the perfect setup. I knew it. I should never have listened to him. What do I do now? Some psychic tells me to go on a plane and I blindly follow his orders? Am I incapable of making my own decisions? Also, Charlie seems to always be around me. Sure, I really like him, but I need some space sometimes too. And I keep getting these weird dreams. I don’t know what that’s about, but I keep seeing my baby in trouble. He isn’t even born yet and already, he’s being tormented. I can’t do this alone.

Quotable Quotes

-          Hurley: “I'm just gonna lay it out straight.”
Sawyer: “OK, you do that.”
Hurley: “I heard you had the flight manifest, and I need it and want you to give it to me.”
Sawyer: “That so?”
Hurley:” Now, you could do it, you know, when you do when someone asks you for something - tell me to screw off...”
Sawyer: “Screw off?”
Hurley: “...Or you could, just, give it to me. 'Cause dude... you could use the points.”
Sawyer: (smiling) “Well, gosh, you do know how to butter a man up, Stay Puft.”
Hurley: (smiling back) “It's a gift.”
Sawyer: (laughing) “The manifest is in the brown suitcase. Take it.”

-          Hurley: “So...I had an idea. I'm out here looking for some psycho with Scott and Steve, right. And I'm realizing.. who the hell are Scott and Steve?”

-          Shannon: “I am so not moving to the Rape Caves!”

-          Claire: “I can't go tomorrow. I have to get my st-“
Psychic: (interrupts) “It has to be this flight. It can't be any other. Flight eight-fifteen.”

-          Shannon: “Name - Shannon Rutherford, Age - 20, Address - Crap Hole Island!” Loved this one.

-          Hurley: “Hey, can I talk to you for a second, yeah I know I already talked to you I just really wanted to get away from him. (talking about Locke)”

-          Sayid: “We're not alone.”

Some Final Notes

-          Ethan’s stare freaked me out. Is he going to attack Charlie and Claire?

-          Will the Losties trust Sayid’s statement that there are others on the island? Sayid looked pretty beat up. I wonder who was causing those whispers the previous episode. Did all of you see Locke’s face when he heard Sayid. Personally, I think he’s enjoying the island.

-          I can’t get Claire’s dream out of my head.

-          I liked Shannon’s comments about the caves. She called them the Rape Caves.

-          Why does Kate always stand up for Jack? He had no right accusing Claire of hallucination. When Charlie confronted him, she forced Charlie to back off.

-          I think we’re seeing a lighter side to Sawyer. I also think he likes Hurley. Who doesn’t like Hurley?

I don’t know what it is with this episode. I loved it. 5 stars
