All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues
Episode 1.11

WOW, WOW, and WOW! Another perfect episode with another perfect story. We got another long-awaited Jack-centric episode and let me say…I loved it. Absolutely amazing! We learnt what Jack did that triggered his father’s alcohol abuse. Meanwhile, the Losties were looking for Claire and Charlie, and find one of their bodies lying in the tree. And Locke and Boone found some sort of steel thing in the ground. Exciting!

We finally learnt what drove Christian (Jack’s father) to run away from his family. During an emergency surgery, Christian came in drunk from a restaurant and performed the surgery under the influence. Consequently, the woman from the car accidentally suffered a rupture of an artery because of Christian's careless mistake. One of the nurses called Jack in the OR because she saw Christian’s hands shaking. The damage done, Jack was not able to save her. When Christian wrote the release forms, he asked for Jack’s signature. He wanted his son to keep the truth from the woman’s husband so he could save his position as chief of surgery. He doesn’t deserve it. He manipulates his son into signing the forms, threatening him that Christian would lose his life if ever his license would be stripped. The interrogation scenes were fantastic. I’m glad that Jack came out with the truth. Christian had no right to get away with what he had done. I wonder what happened later. I would love to see the aftermath of that meeting between the lawyers. I am glad that the truth came out. For one thing, I would never be able to lie. Also, put yourself in the husband’s position. He would never know the truth. How did his wife die? Jack is a real surgeon. He never gives up. He kept trying to save Charlie and he never gave up. It’s commendable.

It was great to see everyone come together to find Ethan. Everyone was somehow affected and the survivors have become a family. It’s great to see this. I didn’t like how Locke neglected to involve the rest of the group. No one likes standing around doing nothing. I’m glad Michael brought this up. There’s too many secrets kept from the others. It’s not right. I’m glad Jack was part of the rescue team. He really took the kidnapping personally. In a way, it was his fault. If he hadn’t offended Claire, she wouldn’t have moved to the beach. We really saw rage in Jack’s eyes. Kate also accompanied the search party and as it turns out, her father had taught the tricks about being a tracker. Boone followed Locke, and the group split up. The fight scene between Jack and Ethan was excellent. It seemed real. I am overjoyed that Charlie survived the tree-hanging. I like Charlie. Matthew Fox was exceptional. When Jack was saving Charlie, the emotion on Fox’s face was incredible. Supported by Evangeline Lilly, these scenes were perhaps the best so far. That’s going a bit far, but it’s true. They were excellent.

We now also have confirmation by Charlie as well that there are others on the island. He said, “All they wanted was her.” Do they want Claire’s baby? Is that what the psychic meant when he said that danger surrounds the baby? Do “The Others” have anything to do with that steel think Locke and Boone found in the ground? We are for certain now of “The Others’” existence. Charlie has confirmed Sayid and Rousseau’s assumptions. They are not alone on the island.

Spotlight on…Jack

-          Jack is in the OR. He refuses to call the patient’s time of death. He seems angry towards his father and tells him to call it himself.

-          Christian yells at Jack for barging into his OR. Jack accuses Christian of operating under the influence.

-          Jack’s father wants to keep the truth under wraps. He manipulates Jack into signing the release forms. Jack, at first, is unforgiving. Christian mentions that, if ever exposed, he would lose his license…as well as his life.

-          Christian speaks with the dead woman’s husband. He is threatening to sue.

-          During the interrogation, Jack reveals the truth, exposing his father. He betrays Christian.

Tales From the Island:

Jack: We found Charlie. I couldn’t let him die. I will never give up on a patient. He wasn’t my patient. He was my friend. The others keep telling me to sleep, telling me that I’m the only person that can help the group. I’m just a doctor. What kind of a person would I be if I gave up on my friends? Claire is still out there and everyone’s acting like we found her. I’m glad Charlie’s okay, but he feels the same way I do. I want to find Claire, but right now, we can’t. Charlie is going through a hard time and I have to help him as much as I can.

Quotable Quotes

-          Jack: “So when’d you pick up the tracking skills, Kate? Before or after you were on the run?”

-          Boone (Locke is tying trees with markers, marking their progress): “You can lead us back to camp, right?”
Locke: “If nothin' happens to me.”
Boone: “Maybe I better take marker detail.”

-          Jack: “This doesn't make any sense, how can one man drag off two people, one of them pregnant.”
Locke: “The question isn't how, it’s why.” We would like to know too.

-          Hurley: “Back home, I'm known as something of a warrior, myself.”

-          Locke: (to Jack): “Go back. Be the doctor. Let me be the hunter.”

-          Charlie: “I didn't see anything, hear anything, I don't remember...anything. Claire.”
Jack: “What?”
Charlie: “That's all they wanted.”
Jack: “Charlie, they?”
Charlie: “All they wanted was Claire.”

-          Walt: “You owe me 20,000 dollars!”
Hurley: “Don't worry, you'll get it.”

-          Sawyer: “Well, well, well. I don't know if you Islams got a concept of karma, but I get the sense this island just served you up a heaping platter of cosmic payback.”

Some Final Notes

-          I liked Walt’s conversation with Sawyer.

-          Walt kept wining at backgammon. He must really be lucky.

-          Sawyer is out of the loop all the time. He needs to move to the caves.

-          I wonder what Charlie must be feeling at this point. He promised to protect Claire and he failed.

-          What happened to Christian after the interrogation?

-          Evangeline Lilly was excellent this week.

-          Michael organized a team to go South. Locke was trying to get them out of his way.

-          What did Boone and Locke find?

-          This show is great.

Amazing episode. 5 stars
