Whatever the Case May Be
Episode 1.12

I’m confused. Was the bank robbery Kate’s original crime? It can’t be. She said she killed a man. Was that her original crime? This has my head spinning. Anyways, the episode was great. I enjoyed visiting Kate’s past. She’s got so many secrets it’s almost scary. I also loved watching the Kate/Sawyer dynamic. These two are more alike than they think.

I’m glad Kate didn’t turn out to be a total sociopath. She does lie, she does kill and she does manipulate, but she has a heart. She refused to kill any of the hostages during the bank robbery which begs to suggest that her original crime wasn’t a total pleasure for her. She broke into the bank to steal some toy airplane that belonged to the man that she killed. Did she also love him? This thing sure has me thinking. I was kind of hoping for something bigger with the case. I was kind of hoping for a huge revelation of Kate’s past—something huge. I am intrigued to find out who that toy plane belongs to. It was also fun watching Kate attempt to grab the suitcase from Sawyer. She never gives up. Then she enlists Jack’s help, but ends up betraying his trust. I personally think she should come clean to Jack. He obviously cares about her, so what’s the problem? Kate, wake up. The bank robbery was very smart. I liked how Kate used her deceptive personality to seduce an idiotic loser to rob the bank with her. That was exciting. Kate also showed some moves when she shot the whole group down. I thought I was watching Sydney Bristow is action.

The Kate/ Sawyer relationship is exciting. I know I keep saying this, but they are alike. They’re both cons, they’re both criminal masterminds, they both have a very dark past and they’re both able to seduce anyone. Here’s what might be fun: they might try and outdo each other. I’m excited. Even though Sawyer seemed to catch Kate every time she attempted to steal the case, she’s quick and smart. I loved watching Kate use her headbutt attack. Sawyer kept falling for it. His curiosity was too great though. He wanted to know what was inside the case. I would too. His attempts to break it open were hysterical. I can always count on Sawyer to make me laugh.

It’s inevitable to feel bad for Charlie. When he was sitting on the beach, just staring at the ocean, I felt sad. He really blames himself for Claire’s kidnapping. I’m glad the writers paired him up with Rose (great to have her back). She’s a spiritual woman who kept his mind off of Claire. Rose still believes that her husband will pop out of the bushes. This might sound crazy, but I believe her. There’s something mysterious about this woman. I love her. I particularly liked her prayer at the end of the episode. I’m glad the writers didn’t dismiss her religion. She sat with Charlie while he was crying and just prayed to God. I love when a tv show goes there.

Is it just me, or are Sayid and Shannon becoming a couple? They are completely different and yet, they work well together. Sayid was the first person to ever take her seriously and I’m looking forward to an ongoing relationship. Seeing as I speak French, I should have caught on that it was a song. The mystery with the French woman continues to haunt me. I don’t know what’s up with her, but I’m still somewhat intrigued.

Spotlight on…Kate

-          Kate is opening an account at a bank when she is taken hostage during a bank robbery. She says her name is Maggie Ryan. She is a photographer.

-          One of the hostages attempts to grab the gun off of one of the gang members. He throws the gun to Kate who stands there frozen. The leader of the group takes her into a private room and kisses her. She is part of the robbery.

-          The group leader purposely hurts Kate to help her story. He wants to convince the bank manager to give him the keys to the safety deposit box by threatening to shoot her.

-          Kate betrays the gang. She shoots the gang members because they were about to kill the manager. She saved him and asked for the keys to the safety deposit box that contained the toy airplane.

Tales from the Island

Kate: How much longer can I keep this secret? There’s so much Sawyer has to learn about me. Why am I even talking about Sawyer like this? He is a jerk. Why would it have killed him to just give me the suitcase? Now I’ve pissed off Jack as well. What is wrong with me? Why can’t I get close to someone? Jack found out about the airplane. I couldn’t tell him the truth. I looked so pathetic. I don’t care though. The airplane belonged to the man that I loved. He can’t know about him. I killed the man I love. Why did I do it? I don’t know. I know on thing: Jack can’t know.

Quotable Quotes

-          Sawyer: “Impact velocity. Physics, my ass.” Loved this one.

-          Boone (to Shannon): “... I'm trying to contribute something... you're just... you're useless!” That’s mean.

-          Shannon (to Boone about Locke): “What is he? Your new boyfriend?”

-          Sayid: “This was a mistake.”
Shannon: “Yeah. Haven't you heard? I'm completely useless.”

-          Sawyer (handing over suitcase): “Hope you got yourselves some jaws of life back in cave town. That's what it's gonna take to pop this bitch.”

-          Sawyer: “You shouldn't be out here alone. Not after what happened to—”

Kate: “No, I'm fine. I can take care of myself.”
Sawyer: “Oh, of course. I don't need protecting. I can take care of myself. Me Kate. Me throw rock.”
Kate: “Shhh.”
Sawyer: “What, you smell blood on the wind?”

-          Sawyer: “I was protecting you!”
Kate: “From what? Southern perverts?” This was great.

-          Rose: “It's a fine line between denial and faith, and it’s a lot nicer on my side.” I love Rose’s words of wisdom.

Some Final Notes

-          What’s up with Locke being so snappy? What’s the big deal if someone saw that metal thing?

-          That dead couple was weird. How disgusting must it have been to be swimming in that water?

-          Now that we have more guns on the island, look forward to Sawyer stealing them.

-          It’s great to see Sun helping out with medicine. She’s very smart.

-          I liked the story about the high tide. According to Billie Doux, it symbolizes “the survivors moving on and leaving hope of being rescued behind.” It makes sense. Good job Billie.

-          I loved watching Hurley make fun of Sawyer.

-          Didn’t Michael and Walt move to the caves? Why were they on the beach?

-          Did everyone give up on Claire?

Good episode. 4 stars
