I’m glad we finally go around to seeing Michael and
Walt’s story. They’ve been in the background for as long as I can remember. Malcom David Kelley really surprised
me as far as acting goes. It’s great to see these young kids perform right next to established stars. He’s a newcomer.
Harold Perrineau was amazing as usual. I’m glad he’s finally taking matters into his own hands. He wants to get
his son off the island so he wants to build a raft. It might sound stupid, but it might work.
There were obvious hints throughout the season that Walt’s
parents were in fact divorced. I had no idea that they were that estranged. Furthermore, I always thought Michael had a steady
job, judging on his career as a construction worker. Turns out he was unemployed for most of his life. He had a relationship
with a woman named Susan. He got her pregnant and she leaves him after she’s offered a good job with a law firm. Michael
is trying to get his career off the ground and she drops a bombshell on him. A real
bombshell. He later gets hit by a car. What was her problem? Why couldn’t she take Michael with him? Was she that
eager to get away from him? It turns out that that was the worst thing that ever happened to Walt. He grew up without the
love of a real caring father. Brian never cared for him. It shows. Walt has grown up with an attitude. Michael could have
changed Walt’s outcome.
Walt has grown up in an environment where he’s been
often times neglected by his parents. He’s lived at home with a nanny all day while his parents are out working countless
hours. He’s been completely secluded from his real father. He hasn’t really had a father figure. I hate Brian. You don’t adopt a child if you’re not going to love him. Walt was given up by Brian
and just handed over to a complete stranger. I don’t blame him for refusing to go with Michael. He’s leaving the
only life he’s ever known.
The Locke/Michael rivalry rose to new heights this week.
Michael kept catching Locke with Walt after specifically ordering Walt to stay away from him. I found it ridiculous for Locke to be handing knives out to Walt. Does he have any sense of responsibility? Walt
kept getting Locke in trouble. Michael kept catching them together. I got irritated with Boone. He kept butting in on every
conversation. Get lost! I’m glad they finally grew to like each other. Locke
helped Michael rescue Walt from the polar bear. The polar bear? WHAT??!!
Yes. There was a polar bear on the island. We’ve seen
this before, but this time there might have been some light shed on the subject. Walt is considered “special.”
Everything he envisions in his head, he sees. He was just staring at the comic book and next thing you know…it appears.
Did he summon the first polar bear back in the pilot? It’s an interesting theory. He obviously made the bird crash in
the window when he saw the picture of the same species of birds in his book. Did he also cause his mother’s death? Wait
a minute! Did he cause the plain crash? That’s dark.
Charlie crossed the line. Never read a girl’s diary:
something I’ve learnt to never do. Ever. The scene with him contemplating whether to read the diary was great. That’s
a classic scene already. Like I said, one thing I’ve learnt throughout the years: never read a girl’s diary.
Spotlight on…Michael and Walt
-
Michael is shopping for baby supplies with
his girlfriend Susan. They are expecting a baby, hopefully to be named Walt. Michael is between jobs right now. His career
as an artist never worked out so he considered construction. Susan is about to graduate from law school. She has made it clear
that she has no intention to marry.
-
Susan has gotten a job offer in Amsterdam. She wants to take Walt
away from Michael. He is still unemployed and evidently cannot care for a child.
-
Michael calls Walt from a payphone. He learns
that she’s seeing someone. Angered by the news, he hangs up the phone and says he’s coming to Amsterdam. While crossing the street, he gets hit by a car.
-
Michael is in the hospital and an expected
three months has passed after the accident. Susan shows up and says she’s taking care of the hospital bills. She also
tells him she’s marrying her boyfriend Brian. Brian, in turn, wants to adopt Walt. Furthermore, they’re moving
to Italy. Walt is turning two years-old in a week.
-
Walt is talking about his school report. His
mother and father are in the room. Susan suddenly feels ill. He states he has no desire to do a project on Australian birds.
A few minutes later, the bird he has chosen to speak about has crashed in the living room window. It’s dead.
-
Suzan died. Brian came to pay a visit to Michael.
He wants him to take custody over Michael. Brian believes Walt’s different.
-
At their home in Australia, Walt’s nanny gives Michael all the unopened letters he sent Walt. Walt has no intention of following
Michael home.
Tales from the Island
Michael: That was close.
I couldn’t find Walt. I was looking everywhere for him. I first thought he was with Locke. I feel bad about that. Sure,
Locke did teach Walt how to throw a knife, but he immediately jumped to help. He’s a good guy and I will not think twice
next time Walt wants to hang out with him. In fact, I would feel safe leaving Walt with Locke. I just want to keep Walt safe.
Now that I have him, I don’t want to leave him. I just want what’s best for him. For now, keeping him safe in
this wild jungle is the only thing I can do right now. I don’t want to let him down again.
Quotable Quotes
-
Walt: “Am I being punished?”
Michael:
“What, you think working with your old man is punishment? No man. This is us taking control of our destiny.”
Walt: “Feels like punishment.” Sure does to me too.
-
(Kate and Charlie are walking toward Sawyer's
tent)
Kate:
“Sawyer! Hey Sawyer!”
Charlie: “You know, I could just
go inside...”
Sawyer: “Trick or treat.”
-
Sawyer: “So what are you two selling today?”
Charlie: “Where's Claire's diary?”
Sawyer: “Oh
I get it. Something goes missing and right away you figure it's gotta be me that took it.” Yep.
-
(Sawyer is pretending he is reading from
Claire's diary)
Sawyer:
“Dear Diary, I'm getting really freaked out by that has-been popstar. I think he's stalking me.”
Kate: “Sawyer!”
Sawyer: “Diary, the little
limey runt just won't let up.” For the few seconds Sawyer was on, he cracked me up.
-
Hurley: “Yo dudes. Got a new tourney lined up. We're playing for the last of
the deodorant sticks. You dawgs up for some golf?” Loved this one.
-
Charlie: “It's weird. I barely knew (correcting himself)... barely know
her...Claire. She's been missing over a week and...every day she's gone it feels like...bits of me are crumbling or... something...”
Some Final Notes
-
This Black Rock thing has my head spinning.
Correction: This show has my head spinning.
-
Jack has been useless for the past few episodes.
-
Claire is back. CLAIRE IS BACK!!! She looked
all beat up. This took me by surprise. I wasn’t expecting her back for awhile.
-
I like when Boone called Shannon
bulimic. It wouldn’t surprise me.
-
The raft idea has to work. They’ve got
to get off the island.
-
The actress who played Susan was the star
of the short-lived Sex, Love, & Lies. It was a terrible show.
-
Walt as a baby was adorable.
-
Michael is a great father. He could have done
so much for his son.
-
I’m glad the nanny gave Michael the
unopened letters.
-
Boone has really gotten over Shannon.
He rarely speaks to her anymore.
-
I hope Vincent comes back.
-
Michael’s last name is Dawson. I’m so proud of myself for noticing that.
-
Locke has a knack for seeing one’s true
potential inside. He can feel Walt’s unique qualities.
Standard good episode.
I heard next week is all about Charlie. I want another Sawyer-centric episode. 3 stars
