WOW! I loved it. I think every episode should be about Sawyer.
His past is complicated, convoluted and crazy. The 3 c’s. The whole episode was perfect. Kate and Sawyer are a couple,
plain and simple. Now that they know they have something in common, watch for them to bond a bit more. I also liked the fact
that they slowed down a bit on the island storyline and focused more on the characters. Just plain brilliant.
I kept wondering after watching “Confidence Man”
(episode 8) whether Sawyer ever found the real Sawyer. Now we know why he was in Sydney. He was following a lead that led straight to the real Sawyer. Or so he thought.
Turns out the man he killed wasn’t Sawyer. Not only did he murder, he also killed the wrong man. That must really hurt.
Frank Duckett was just a man from Tennessee who moved to Australia
to open a restaurant (actually, it’s hard to call it a restaurant). Sawyer’s
old contact, Hibbs, gave him the wrong information and here we are. A good man is dead. I found it interesting that they tied
in this part of Sawyer’s past with the boar. To me, the boar seems to be his past coming back to bite him in the ass.
Call it his guilty conscience if you will. For all these years, he has never been able to forget that one time he killed a
man. Finally it’s caught up with him. Another great theory I’ve had was what if the boar was his mother? It seems
kind of strange, but it sounds a lot like Locke’s story. What if his mother Laura was unhappy about him killing Frank
Duckett? What if she’s disappointed with the way he turned out? It’s weird, but plausible.
The best scene of the night involved Kate and Sawyer. The
“I Never” game was so much fun. It’s a great way to get a few laughs out, or a good way to piss someone
off. The game started out with some good clean fun. Kate found out that Sawyer wore pink and Sawyer found out that Kate never
had a one night stand. Then the gloves came off. Kate picked on Sawyer’s letter, and Sawyer learnt that Kate was a murderer.
Turns out he’s also killed someone. No, really? I did like when he mentioned
that they had something in common. Who did Kate kill?
It was nice watching Charlie trying to deal with Ethan’s
death. Although he knew he was right, he became very quiet, blowing people off. He refused to go on a walk with Claire and
just acted cold around the others. I’m glad Sayid finally talked some sense into him. Like usual, Hurley came up with
the best idea. I think he should be more involved in the decision-making process. He has a great heart and is always on the
lookout for someone to help. He’s a great guy. Charlie himself has undergone a radical change during the past month.
He quit his addiction, he fell in love with Claire and killed a man. This rapid change has certainly taken its toll on him.
I think it only makes sense for him to just be alone, to rediscover who he is. I sound
like a shrink.
Locke, on the other hand, with the help of the island, has
become a new person. He’s no longer the man backstage, but the man on stage. He himself has prevailed through unimaginable
obstacles. I found the story about his sister and mother to be refreshing and smart. He’s a man of faith without a doubt.
He believes in the supernatural and he believes that some questions don’t have answers. Furthermore, we learnt that
he had a foster mother. He’s been through a lot.
Spotlight on...Sawyer
-
Sawyer, as a child, remembers his mother’s
death. His father barged into the house and shoots Laura (Sawyer’s mom). Sawyer is hiding under the bed, scares of what
his dad might do to him. His father later sits on his kid’s bed and kills himself.
-
Sawyer comes in his hotel room with a girl.
His old friend Hibbs turns on the light. He tells Sawyer that he has a lead on where the real Sawyer is.
-
Sawyer goes to buy a gun. The seller says
that a shooter gets one chance to strike. He must take that chance.
-
Sawyer goes to see Frank Duckett at his restaurant.
He couldn’t kill him. He goes to a bar and meets Christian, Jack’s father. Sawyer is convinced he must kill Frank.
-
That same night, Sawyer returns to see Frank.
This time, he finishes the job. Frank wasn’t the real Sawyer. He was an innocent man.
Tales from the Island
Sawyer: Kate stares at
me and looks down at me. She should stare at me. I feel stupid thinking that boar had personal beef with me. It didn’t.
When I grabbed the young boar, Kate went crazy. She made me release it. I was never going to hurt it. I just had enough with
that boar. It stole my tarp, it tackled me to the ground, and it crushed all my stuff. It didn’t touch any of Kate’s
stuff. It is just a boar. My night with Kate was fun. I found out she was married and I also found out she killed a man.
Quotable Quotes
-
Sayid: “You're not alone, Charlie. Don't pretend to be.”
-
Kate: “Would you listen to yourself? It's a boar. Just go tell Locke and he'll
kill it.”
Sawyer: “Nope. This is my fight.”
-
Jack: “Let him keep the gun. It's not worth it.”
Kate: “What, are you worried he's going to shoot me if I ask?”
-
Kate: “I never wore pink.”
(Sawyer drinks)
Kate: “I knew it.”
-
Sawyer: “I never killed a man.”
(Kate drinks. Sawyer drinks)
Sawyer: “Well, looks like we got something in common, after all.”
-
Charlie: “Hurley, look, I appreciate the help. You don't have to. I killed Ethan,
I can bury him.”
Hurley: “Yeah, 'til he raises from the dead.
Dude, I know how this works. This is going to end with you and me running through the jungle screaming crying. He catches
me first because I'm heavy and I get cramps.” I loved this one.
-
Sawyer: “He peed on my
shirt! He took my shirt out of the bag, and peed on it. And you say this ain't personal?”
Some Final Notes
-
These character connections are going to be
a habit I heard. It’s smart to connect Christian with Sawyer.
-
I can’t believe Kate was briefly married.
-
Sawyer heard the voices Rousseau and Sayid
claimed to have heard. This time, Sawyer also heard them in the morning.
-
Sawyer’s real name is James.
-
Locke’s sister Jeannie fell off the
monkey bars and broke her neck. One day a golden retriever came into their house. His foster mother thought it was Jeannie.
-
The raft is really looking nice.
-
I felt bad for the baby boar. Sawyer went
too far there.
-
I liked Christian’s saying : “That's why the Red Sox will never win the damned series”
-
Sawyer’s face was priceless when he
realized who Christian really was.
Outstanding episode. This was a great stand-alone. It wasn’t heavy on the mythology and it’s a good thing to take
a breather every so often. 5 stars
