Exodus, Part 2
Episode 2.24

Unbelievable. I’m stunned. I’m just stunned. I loved it. I loved it. I loved it. At first I had no idea how they were going to make the finale into a two-hour episode then I decided to have faith in Damon and J.J. The episode was perfect from start to finish. Of course, we were left with some huge cliffhangers, some new questions and a whole new story for next year.

We had much fewer flashbacks this week, but the ones we had were effective and well done. We flashbacked to Locke in a sad scene that almost had me crying. This was depressing to watch. Not only was Locke rejected a spot on the walkabout, but the flight attendants can’t get him on board because they lost the special wheelchair. They actually had to pick him up and bring him to his seat. How sad. Of course we had to have Charlie involved with drugs. He slept with a woman (can I call her a slut?) who he picked up at a bar. Both are stone and both are low-lives. It’s hard to look at Charlie like this. He’s come such a long way. The island has really helped him. The best scenes of the night belonged to Hurley. He was hysterical, clumsy, and just plain fun. It was ironic when the attendant at the gate told him this was his lucky day. If she only knew what happened to him. What are the odds that there was a power failure just when Hurley was staying at the hotel. That’s just bad luck. There was also a beautiful scene with every character right before the flight took off. It was a masterpiece: Michael tightened Walt’s seatbelt, Sawyer came in storming, Kate had her hands covered, Hurley comes in sweating giving Walt a thumb up and Jack gives Locke a nod. Who knew that these strangers would one day become a struggling family? Brilliant.

The Others were the predominant source of conflict for the finale. Danielle heard them talking in the forest. They were coming for “the boy.” She assumed they were coming for Aaron. I like that name. Did she really hear them though, or was it made up? Did they start the smoke? Then, OMG, they took Walt away. The Others are ugly, dirty, and ugly again. Why do they want Walt so much? It scares me when I think about it, but I’m scared for him. He was howling when they took him away. Where did they get a gun and a bomb from? I hope we see more of them next season. They are scary.

The explorers reached the Black Rock. What exactly is it? Locke deduced that these slaves were being brought to a mining site. It’s depressing to know people are treated like that. Inside this ship, there was dynamite. Arzt blew up. His death was so spontaneous that I jumped out of my seat. They announced he was going to be series regular next season. What was I supposed to do? Supposedly, it was a ship from Africa. Why did it land a few kilometers inland?

All right. What is up with that security system? Why is it black smoke? Was that what Locke say awhile back? Is this the monster? For some reason, Rousseau thinks it’s a security system that protects the island. Why would she think that? I think that thing eats people. That’s just my guess. The black smoke was cool. It just floated in the air. Am I wrong? It looked cool.

Danielle absolutely lost her mind. She attacked Claire then took Aaron from her in an attempt to negotiate with the Others to get Alex back. I think the survivors didn’t take into account what Rousseau was going through. Sayid was the only one. Charlie yelled at her, spit on her, and then called her a “lunatic.” It’s not her fault. Claire would act the exact same way if she had lost her child. The most dangerous creature on earth is a mother who lost her child. We all saw Claire’s rage and determination. She was hoping for a bloody revenge. Rousseau has been alone for sixteen years. How else would anyone expect her to react?

Is Jack overreacting or are we really going to have a problem with Locke next season? I think it’s time to worry. Locke already had an obsession with opening the hatch. He clearly heard and saw Hurley running like a madman telling them to halt the plan. Locke needed the hatch to explode. I’ve never seen someone so motivated to prove his destiny. The Jack/Locke struggle is going to be huge later on. Locke has labeled himself a man of faith, and Jack a man of science. Never in history have these two met eye to eye. Locke is going to be obsessed what whatever he finds in the hatch. He still believes he’s been chosen. This island is his destiny.

Sayid was a hero this week. He was leading the escape to the caves, he helped Shannon deal with her grief and he ran after Rousseau to get Aaron back. I’m glad Sayid has been so understanding of Shannon’s emotions. She has no one else on the island. She has to learn to deal with her problems. Sayid had his own things to carry, but he made sure he found room to carry Boone’s old clothes and belongings. I think it was essential for Shannon to hold on to Boone’s memory. Deep down, I think she really loved him.

And so all that work for no reason. The hatch door has been destroyed and Walt had been kidnapped. Did I learn anything new? Why do the writers do this to us? Furthermore, Sawyer has been shot and Jin jumped in after him. Now they have two options: Get back to the island or die out at sea. Everything has been destroyed. Of all the storylines, I’m really excited to see the conclusion of this one.

All I know is that the writers have left open a giant door. We have so many questions and so many answers to find that my head is spinning. For one thing, I’m glad this got a shot on ABC. What’s in the hatch? What will happen to Walt? What’s the monster? Who are the Others? These are just the bigger questions the writers have yet to answer. I know I’ll be waiting for season two.

Spotlight on…more Losties

-          When Jin goes to wash up the coffee from his shirt, a man claiming to work for Mr. Paik threatens him. He tells him to deliver the watch if he ever wants to see Sun again. He advises Jin to not run away.

-          Charlie has been smoking heroin with another female junkie. She tackles him for some leftover. He keeps it away from her.

-          Michael is talking to his mom about Walt at the airport. He asks her to take care of him while he works. Walt hears the whole thing.

-          Hurley is late for his flight. He’s running around the hospital and just makes his flight.

Quotable Quotes

-          Jack: “Everyone wants me to be the leader until I make a decision someone doesn't like.”

-          Hurley: “How exactly does something like this happen?”
Danielle: “Are you on the same island as I am?”

-          Locke: “Survival is all relative, Jack.”

-          Sun: “Do you think all this...all we've been through...do you think we're being punished?”
Shannon: “Punished for what?”
Sun: “Things we did before...the secrets we kept, the lies we told.”
Shannon: “Who do you think is punishing us?”
Sun: “Fate.”
Claire: “No one's punishing us. There's no such thing as fate.”

-          Hurley: “You have some Arzt on you.”

-          Hurley: “Whoever named this place 'dark territory'. . . genius.”

-          Hurley (to Kate after Arzt blew up): “That was messed up.”

-          Sawyer: “Who the hell is Hugo and how did he get $160 million to leave to his mama?!?”

-          Jenna the flight attendant: “This is your lucky day.” Ya right.

-          Michael: “You're either a hero, or you want to die.”

Sawyer: ‘Well, I ain't no hero, Mike.”

-          Jack: “If anyone hears anything or sees anything...”

Hurley: “Like a security system that eats people?”

Some Final Notes

-          I jumped when Locke made the “bzzt” noise when he was removing the dynamite.

-          I can’t believe Charlie took one of the statues of the Virgin Mary. Why is he going back to heroin? Locke should have put the plane to flames.

-          Mira Furlan was excellent as Rousseau.

-          Sawyer, Jin and Michael have really forged a tight bond. Jin jumped into the water when Sawyer had been shot.

-          I laughed when Sawyer opened up the bottle to read the letters inside.

-          Walt was great when he told Michael that his mother was wrong to keep the two of them apart. Good for Walt.

-          I’m disappointed with Jack. Who does he think he is just taking the dynamite when it was rightfully Kate’s.

-          Hurley was traumatized after Arzt had blown up in front of him.

-          I liked listening to Hurley’s wish list. He wanted “Twinkies” in the hatch. Why not?

-          Sawyer wants to build a resort on the island. Right.

-          Rousseau really got good at laying traps. This woman is dangerous.

-          Sawyer is definitely suicidal. He implied it straight up. When one thinks about it, what else does he have to live for?

These finale reviews are exhausting. I’m sure I missed something and I apologize. Thanks for tuning in and make sure you read the season two reviews. I almost forgot. Rating time. I’m giving this episode 5 stars. Do we disagree?
