Tabula Rasa
Episode 1.3

Kate was the center of the story this week and I loved it. I also loved the new setup the show has adopted. Throughout the episode, we were shown flashbacks from Kate’s past and I hope this will become a trend. It looks like every character has had some sort of complex past they would like to hide. Once again, we got some wonderful character arcs and some great revelations.

This week’s episode revolved almost entirely around Kate. She’s a fugitive who was being brought back to the US when the plane crashed. The scene in Jack’s hut with her and the marshal was fantastic (probably the best one of the episode). Evangeline Lilly can deliver. The marshal finally realized that Kate had some sort of a heart. The favor she had asked him on the plane was one that meant a lot to her. She wanted the marshal to make sure that the guy who had turned her in received his 23 grand. Once again, I don’t believe what she did to be a terrible thing. She has a heart and I would sure love to know the truth about her crime. It will take time. They are going to keep that hidden for awhile. I loved how she made sure she saved Ray after she escaped from the truck. That was so significant. She would have gotten away but she saved his life. Furthermore, she wasn’t even able to kill him. She let Sawyer do it. I was really hoping that Kate wouldn’t pull the trigger and I got my wish. Instead, she let Sawyer have the gun. Can Jack trust her now? This gets better and better.

We saw this week the effects of being a doctor. Jack just couldn’t let his patient go. Even though the marshal was on the verge of dying, Jack kept going. He was not able to let anyone kill his patient. I have a question. Jack said that it would take hours for him to die now that the marshal had a collapsed lung. So why did he die so soon? Did Jack kill him? This is great stuff and I’m hoping for a Jack flashback soon.

Mr. Locke is weird. I still have that last scene stuck in my head. He was just staring at Michael and Walt when Vincent returned. He’s very mysterious and a great person to have on the show. I liked how he offered Michael the chance to give Walt his dog back personally. That was a kind gesture and it looks like Locke really cares for Walt. I’m sorry, but that last scene still haunts me. Props to Terry O’Quinn for playing such a great role in the story. He was great on Alias, though he finally deserves his big break. We’re going to miss him.

I wasn’t absolutely convinced about the group not revealing the truth about the transmission. I think they should have come clean. I would want the complete truth. In what position is Sayid to make decisions for others? I liked seeing him splitting the group up in three. I think his years in the military will be a valuable asset to survival. He knows how to organize groups and keep the morale strong. I’m glad that Kate told Jack the truth, even though he was expecting her to come clean about her past. This is some strong stuff and the character arcs will only become better as the season progresses.

Spotlight on…Kate

-          Kate went to Australia in order to escape from the marshal.

-          She slept in a barn belonging to a man named Ray who needed help on his farm. She stayed three months with him until she decided to leave.

-          Kate told him her name was Annie and she was from Canada.

-          Ray turned her in after seeing her mug shot at the post office.

-          She attempted to escape by swerving the truck off the road. The truck caught fire and Kate saved Ray. She was then caught by the marshal.

-          The two of them were being sent back to Los Angeles on Oceanic Airlines.

Tales from the Island

Kate: Jack knows I’m a fugitive. The marshal showed him my mug shot. I wanted to end his suffering. I wanted to shoot him. Now Jack thinks I’m a complete psychopath. I didn’t but I thought it was only right. I didn’t tell Jack the truth; I couldn’t. There will come a time when I’ll have to reveal the truth, but I want to keep it hidden as long as I can. Jack promised he wouldn’t tell. I hope he won’t. Jack is a great guy. He couldn’t quit. He kept trying and trying to save the marshal. I trust him. I had to tell him about the polar bear and the French woman’s recording. What was that about? Is this woman still alive? I don’t know if we should tell everyone. It’s their right. How many polar bears are there on the island? How can there be a polar bear on a tropical island?

Quotable Quotes

-          Hurley: “Was it a dinosaur?”

Jack: “It wasn’t a dinosaur.”

Hurley: “If you didn’t see it, how do you know it wasn’t a dinosaur?”

          Jack: “Because dinosaurs are extinct.”

          Hurley: “Oh, right.”

-          Marshal: “Listen to me. No matter what she does, no matter how she make you feel, just don’t…trust a word she says. She will do anything to get away.”

-          Sawyer: “You’re just not looking at the big picture, Doc. You’re still back in civilization.

Jack: “Yeah? And where are you?”

Sawyer: “Me? I’m in the wild.”

-          Jack: “Three days ago we all died. We should all be able to start over.”

-          Sayid: “If we tell them what we know, we take away their hope…and hope is a very dangerous thing to lose.”

-          Kate: “I’ve got trust issues.”

-          Hurley: “She looks pretty hardcore.” Loved this one.

-          Shannon: “I wish he would die already.”

Boone: “Really humane, Shannon.” That’s evil.

Some Final Notes

-          I like how the relationships are staring to grow on the island. Sayid gave an apple to Sawyer. I love the details.

-          Michael walked into Sun taking a shower. I hope Jin doesn’t find out. What was Michael running from anyway? Was that the monster?

-          Charlie and Claire seem to start bonding. They look good together. Charlie even started talking to Locke.

-          Will we ever see the French woman? I hope so.

-          Jin was a pig towards Sun. He told her to wash up because she looked filthy. He then told her he loved her.

-          Sawyer shot the marshal and missed. He’s starting to be the most hated person on the island.

Great episode. Not as good as the premiere. Considering the first two episodes we’re perfect, I’m giving this episode 4 stars
