The 23rd Psalm
Episode 2.10

This is such a beautiful psalm. I’ve read the Bible once and I couldn’t remember this passage. Then I went back to read it and I thought it was beautiful. Honestly, if the rest of this show would just focus on Eko, I would be just fine with it. He’s had an eye-opening life and it would be great to find out what else has happened in his past. AAA is an exceptional actor.

So much has happened involving Eko alone I don’t know where to start. It’s great that we got some ANSWERS!!! We know where the plane came from. It was originally supposed to be flown by Eko. It all started when a rogue militia drove into his village in Nigeria and wanted his younger brother Yemi to kill an elder of the town. Eko saved his brother by shooting the man himself. What a guy. He then grows up to become the biggest crime lord of the country feared by everyone.

His brother didn’t dare fear him. Yemi became a priest—a good one at that. He put the well-being of his people before his own. Eko was unimpressed. All joking aside, Eko is really a scary man. I liked watching such a different side to my new favourite character. He’s just scary. With one movement of the arm, he slashed two people’s throats. Just some fast easy stuff for the big guy. But he never never hurt children. That’s why I respect him.

This is where the debate starts. Was Eko right to kill the old man? Of course he was. He did it for his brother. I would have done the same thing. He knew the consequences of killing a man: you were taken away. Children were stripped of their religion. He didn’t want his younger brother to go through the pain of killing. I don’t blame Eko for wanting his brother to welcome him with open arms. And sheesh! Yemi, don’t hold back. I’m surprised Eko didn’t lose it hearing his brother constantly tell him he’s going to Hell and he can’t be forgiven. Give him a break.

So the yellow plane turned out to be Eko’s. It was supposed to be carrying those Virgin Mary statues with heroine inside. Yemi was taken by Eko’s crazy friend and he must have died after being shot. The plane somehow landed in the jungle. We still don’t know why. We’ll probably never find out. I’m glad Eko out everything on fire. It’s time he moved on. That was a chapter of his life he wants closed. He cheated his way into becoming a priest just so he could export drugs. That’s not something to be proud of.

Charlie shouldn’t be proud of himself. He didn’t take one statue. He took SIX. He hasn’t opened them yet. What, is he waiting for the good moment? Good moment? When’s the good moment for me to kill him? I’m not kidding. I used to love Charlie. Now, I just can’t stand him. I’m glad Claire pushed him away. It’s time for him to learn. He can’t have everything. It’s drugs or family. His choice.

We finally got a clear glimpse of the monster. It’s a huge pile of black smoke. More than that…it supposedly shows flashes from the person’s past. I have to admit it—side with Locke—whatever you want to call it…the black smoke was beautiful. Finally, we get a good look at the monster. I just have to say how glad I am it’s not one big dinosaur or something. I mean that would be a letdown. But this was unique and smart. Who would have thought that black smoke can be a monster? Yeah, it’s a bit out there, but the concept works.

Spotlight on…Eko

-          Kids are playing in the streets of a town in Nigeria. Militia men come into the town to take children. They force Eko’s brother to shoot someone. He can’t. To save his brother, Eko shoots the elder. He is taken away.

-          A drug dealer gives Eko two bags of heroin. Eko can’t sell the drugs here. He wants to export them to another country. He needs a plane. Only the Catholic churches have planes. He wants one of them.

-          Eko returns home to visit his brother Yemi. The latter is a priest. Yemi doesn’t thin confession will save his brother’s soul. Nothing will. Eko wants his plane. Yemi won’t give it to him.

-          Eko walks in in the middle of a confession. He threatens Yemi telling him to make him a priest or his church will go down in flames. He signs the papers and gives them 300 statues.

-          Eko and his friends have become priests. They are packing the plane when Yemi comes to warn him that the army is coming. Yemi is shot and is dragged into the plane by Eko’s friend. Eko is left alone. He has replaced his brother.

Tales from the Island

Eko: I can’t believe Yemi’s plane was on this island the whole time. What is that about? How could he have crashed here? Why did he crash here? I found my cross. He was wearing it the say he died. I miss him so much. Then this black smoke came right for me. I wasn’t afraid of it. I just waited to see it. I saw flashes of my past inside. It didn’t harm me. It was trying to tell me something. I don’t know what it is, but I felt it inside. Charlie doesn’t understand. He wanted m to run. I won’t run. This encounter was enlightening. It didn’t bother me.

Quotable Quotes

-          Michael: “Silent movies. You’re not that old, man.”

-          Charlie (to Eko): “You don’t do happy.” Loved this one.

-          Eko: “You are lying. Take me to the plane.” He was scary here.

-          Yemi: “God did not bring you here Eko. Your own greed did.”

-          Kate: “I don’t think you have to be belligerent for belligerence’s sake.”

-          Kate: Everybody loves you know.”

Sawyer: “Bull pucky.”

-          Hurley: “Yo, glad you’re back man.”

Sawyer: “Yo yourself, Pillsbury.”

-          Eko: “Yemi, I know you live in a world where righteousness and evil seem ery far apart, but that is not the real world.”

-          Charlie: “I find it very odd that your Jesus stick has blood on it.”

-          Charlie: “Most people when they see a creature made of swirling black smoke, they run.” I would.

Some Final Notes

-          The cross was a very important part of the episode. I’m glad Eko is wearing it again.

-          I still can’t get over Eko slicing both those people’s throats. I love this guy.

-          Michael is definitely going to run away. He knows how to shoot now. Oh yeah! He’s gone.

-          I had to laugh when Sawyer was all pissed when he found out everyone loved him.

-          Charlie kept lying to Eko. He finally learnt that was a bad idea.

-          Eko’s evil friend with the gold tooth scared me.

-          Michael asked Walt where he is. We of course will never know.

-          I liked how Ana Lucia was greeted by Sun and Jin. That was a very nice moment. I really like Jin now. He gave her a fish. Awwww….

-          Hurley helped Libby out with her tent. The big guy is always trying to help someone. Everyone should be like him.

-          Sawyer was looking himself in the mirror and Kate just died laughing. Did you see Jack’s face when he gave him his pill? He’s definitely jealous.

-          Claire says she doesn’t want Charlie near her baby.

-          The 23rd Psalm is beautiful. I loved watching Eko and Charlie recite it out loud. Beautiful moment.

I looooved this episode. One of my favourites. 5 stars
