How about boring + terrible? Honestly, this was the worst
episode EVER! I have a tendency to dislike Charlie-centric episodes, but this one was just horrible. The writers just made
Charlie into the most despicable character on the show. It’s weird to see that after all those great things they did
with his character in the first season.
You know why it felt so weird? There has been no consistency
to his character. In one scene, he’s giving Aaron towels and in the next scene he’s kidnapping him and ready to
throw him in the water. I don’t care if he was going to get him baptized. You don’t take a baby like that. Charlie
was obviously not thinking clearly. He has abandonment issues. He couldn’t bear being abandoned by his brother and he
couldn’t bear being abandoned by Claire. Maybe he shouldn’t screw up.
Liam was ignorant enough to just leave his brother with his
drug problem. Who does that? Not only did Liam leave Charlie, he sold his brother’s piano to leave. That’s extremely
disgusting. Liam was a mess. Charlie gave up his professional goals because his brother kept messing up. He still would NEVER
ditch his brother. When they lost the commercial, Charlie didn’t dare kick his brother out of the group. Liam, however,
would have done it in a heartbeat.
Charlie was shattered when his brother left, but knowing
he couldn’t take care of Aaron made him feel worse. Much worse. But Charlie
really deserved to be slapped by Claire. I’m actually surprised she resorted to that. That hurt Charlie the most, knowing
the only person he loved left him. Let’s just blame Liam for this whole mess.
I liked how this episode dealt with the subject of baptism.
Religion is underused and misunderstood in the biz. Now, Charlie just went psycho over it. Like religious zealot psycho. I’m glad though that Eko got to baptize mother and son. It felt so odd to
hear Claire say she had never been baptized. In my family, baptism is a must. It’s a very simple service. I’m
glad the writers decided to tackle something so controversial on a television show.
Spotlight on…Charlie
-
It’s Christmas morning and Charlie’s
mother got him a piano.
-
Charlie is looking at a baby through a hospital
window. It’s Liam’s child. Karen, Liam’s wife, asks about Liam. Charlie tells her that he got stuck at the
airport. It turns out Charlie lied for him. Liam was at Charlie’s. He was getting a fix.
-
Drive Shaft is shooting a commercial for a
diaper company. Liam is a complete mess. The band gets fired and Charlie refuses to let go of his brother.
-
Charlie is playing piano. Liam comes in crying.
He says Karen kicked him out of the house. He dropped Megan.
-
Liam sold Charlie’s piano. He wants
the money to move to Australia and go into rehab. He’s going to get a job with Karen’s uncle and he’s going to clean
up.”
Tales from the Island
Charlie: All I wanted to
do was baptize the baby. I wasn’t going to hurt him. Claire knew that. But no one let me hold the child. Locke took
it and just took me down. I didn’t resist. It felt like I deserved it. Jack came to see me after and he made me promise
that I wouldn’t do something like that again. Of course I won’t do that again. I won’t dare do that again.
I won’t dare hurt Claire again. She won’t ever trust me again. No one will. Locke took my Virgin Mary statues.
I wasn’t going to use, but I really wanted too. Now I never will.
Quotable Quotes
-
Charlie’s Mom: “Save us. Charlie,
Save us.”
-
Charlie (to
Claire): “Has he been asking about me?”
-
Charlie (to
Liam): “By the way, you have a daughter.”
-
Sawyer: “Looks like Ana Lucia is getting
the $20 tour.” He’s such an instigator. He knows Kate has feelings for Jack. He’s hysterical.
-
Sawyer (to
Hurley about Libby): “Well, well, look who’s off to the Laundromat.”
-
Charlie (about
Locke): “The bald wanker knows something.”
-
Eko: “Is something wrong Charlie?”
Charlie: “Apart
from me losing my mind? No. Everything’s been just peachy.”
- Ana Lucia: “She’s hot. You’re
hot. That’s what people do.”
Jack: “Not hitting
that.” He so wants to.
-
Locke: “You’re giving up the right
to be believed Charlie.”
Some Final Notes
-
The opening scene where Charlie dreams of
Liam in a diaper and his father pointing a butcher’s knife at him was great.
-
Whenever Charlie saw Locke with the baby,
he would go crazy.
-
Sawyer called Hurley “Jabba” and
“Jethro.”
-
I loved watching Sawyer try to hook up Hurley
with Libby. Poor Hurley was looking for the best moment and Sawyer made him act the “Sawyer way.”
-
Jack is always with Ana Lucia now. Sawyer
said it was the $20 tour. Kate was getting so jealous.
-
I got so scared when I saw Claire and Charlie’s
mom dressed up as saints. It was Charlie hallucinating again. Did anyone notice the plane
flying in the background? I didn’t either.
-
That commercial that Drive Shaft was going
to shoot was so lame.
-
Hurley says he thinks he has seen Libby before.
She says he stepped on her foot in the plane.
-
Eko was picking out his favourite trees. Why?
-
Ana Lucia said Kate and Jack should hook-up.
That’s what hot people do. I loved Ana Lucia there. She’s turning to be a great fit on the Losties’ island.
-
Charlie started the fire so he could distract
everyone. Thank God Claire saw him.
-
Why did Locke keep the Virgin Mary statues?
Not very good…1 ½ star hence the short review.
