The Long Con
Episode 2.13

I just love Sawyer-centric episodes. This might be one of my favourite episodes of all time. It was fast-paced, deceptive and just an all-around smart episode. I loved the power struggle. Finally though, it was created by Sawyer. We’ve gotten used to seeing the good Sawyer; he didn’t like seeing himself like that. So the con is conning again.

What I especially loved about the flashbacks this week was the fact that they completely mirrored the island stuff. It was all about the long cons. I should have figured out that Sawyer was going to do something about the guns. It’s like he said. He doesn’t want Locke and Jack out on top. It’s his turn now. Honestly, I cannot be any more excited for this new plot twist.

So he pulled off the long con. He made a woman fall for him. He taught her everything he knew. She thought she knew everything. Boy was she wrong. This just goes to prove Sawyer’s deceptive nature. He can con anyone. Who would have thought that he could con Jack, Locke and Kate? Everyone underestimates him, but it’s like he says: he’s always been like this. He’ll never change.

Why did he need to have the guns? I don’t think he did. This whole thing that happened on the island wasn’t about his stash…or the guns. It’s like Kate said: he wants to be hated. That’s the only possible explanation. I still don’t buy it though. What was all that about trying to save Walt and going to the raft to find help for everyone? Did he just do that for fun? Is this sudden change of attitude a way for him to tell everyone that he’s not a good person? Does he need people to back off?

I have to admit though that his plan was genius. Using Charlie as tool, he gets him to kidnap Sun and cause a whole uproar at the camp. He knew Jack and Jin would come for the guns and he knew Locke would be against the whole idea. Fueled by Charlie’s desire to humiliate Locke, Sawyer had the whole thing planned. Sun’s kidnapping made everyone uneasy. Charlie then followed Locke and told Sawyer where the guns were hidden. The rest played out exactly as he predicted. He knew Kate would go after Ana Lucia. I’m sure she was also pissed about her spending so much time with Jack. It’s all simple, but pure genius.

I’d like to comment on the fact that I just hate hate hate Charlie. I want him to die. I’m not a violent person, but he has just become a despicable person. I hope the truth comes to the surface so Locke can knock him out again. He deserves it and it sure will put a smile on my face.

Who was right in this debate? It’s hard to tell. I can understand Jack’s desire to go after the Others for good, but I also respected Locke’s arguments. There would most likely be an accident. He still feels responsible with what happened with Michael. I respect him for that and he’s taking responsibility of the guns. He got conned and that’s the only thing that happened.

This thing with the army got completely out of hand. Jack took it way too far and honestly, I can’t believe he did something like this. It’s out of nature. Why was he so ready to go to war with the scariest people living on the island? Jack has a God complex and I’m happy Sawyer really stuck it to him. In all honesty, I think Sawyer is the best one to man the guns. He’s the right one to lead the herd. I’m not kidding. He doesn’t act with emotion; he acts with instinct. Personally, I’m glad Jack has been dethroned.

This will hopefully bring an end to the army madness. The island was hitting Lord of the Flies territory and it was beginning to scare me. Everything was so dark and depressing. Alliances were being formed and bonds were breaking. The most interesting breakup was Kate’s and Sawyer’s. She’s definitely had enough with him. I think she really realized that Sawyer can’t change. She’s better than he will ever be. She doesn’t like the con man he’s always been.

Spotlight on…Sawyer

-          Sawyer has been sleeping with a woman named Cassidy. He acts like he’s late and he drops his briefcase showing her all his money. He’s played this con several times. Cassidy doesn’t fall for it. She says she doesn’t have any money and she would love to learn how to con.

-          Sawyer is showing Cassidy a classic con. He is making some crappy jewelry worth thousands only to sell then at a few hundred apiece. They pull it off.

-          Cassie wants to take on a long con. She lied to him about the money. She has 600 grand.

-          Sawyer is approached by his partner. He tells Gordy that he doesn’t want to do the con now. He doesn’t want to go through with it. Gordy thinks he’s fallen for her. He says he’ll kill both her and Sawyer if he doesn’t go through with it.

-          Sawyer tells Cassidy that she’s the long con. He’s telling her to run away. The man inside the black car will kill them both. He loves her. He gives her the bag with the money.

-          Sawyer gets her to leave. He gets into the car. There was no one inside. He gets back into the house and takes a bag of money inside. He gave her the fake cash.

Tales from the Island

Sawyer: I conned each and every one of them. They never saw me coming. They were all occupied with Jack and Locke. No one even threw me a look. I used Charlie to find the guns and the rest played into my hands. That little bastard smothered Sun and diverted attention away from me. That guy is crazy. I promised I wouldn’t tell. I just love to be back on top. I’ve got all the guns. I’ve got all the power. The doc ain’t coming close to me now.

Quotable Quotes

-          Locke: “You wanna break seven Virgin Mary statues, be my guest. I’m superstitious.”

-          Sawyer (to Charlie): “Well, well, look who had to relocate to the suburbs.”

-          Sawyer (to Charlie): “You even made Locke take a swing at you. Hell, that’s like getting Ghandi to beat his kids.”

-          Kate: “I like what you’ve done with the place.”

Sawyer: “Maid’s day off.”

-          Kate: “Not everyone’s like you Sawyer.”

Sawyer: “Guess that’s why El Jacko and Ana Lulu didn’t ask me to join their revolution.”

-          Sayid: “It’s a glorified walkie-talkie.”

Hurley: “Yeah, but can’t you switch a blue wire with a red wire and make it stronger?” Everything’s simple in Hurley’s head.

-          Sawyer: “And you versus Sun, hot-oil death match, my money’s on you, Sheena.”

Kate: “Thanks for the vote of confidence.”

-          Sawyer: “There’s a new sheriff in town boys.”

-          Sawyer: “You run, I con. A tiger don’t change its striped.”

-          Sawyer: “I’m not a good person Charlie.” You’re right.

Some Final Notes

-          I loved how Locke didn’t want to give Jack the combo. It turned out it didn’t really matter.

-          Jack had to take Sawyer’s pills. Hasn’t he learnt you don’t touch his stash?

-          Sawyer though Locke was sleeping next to Claire because he has needs…Sawyer’s sick.

-          Kate didn’t know about the army. She’s really on the outs with Jack.

-          I liked watching Hurley try and cheer up Sayid with the radio thingamagig.

-          No one wants to join the army. I guess there goes the idea.

-          I loved when Ana Lucia said, “they’re back.” That would have been a nice moment if it was actually true.

-          Sawyer calls Sun, “Tokyo Rose” and Kate “Sheena.”

-          The waitress that served Sawyer was Kate’s mom.

-          Hurley says he’s reading something called “Bad Twin.” It’s a mystery manuscript.

-          Sayid and Hurley caught orchestra music. That’s a letdown.

-          What’s going to happen now? Is Sawyer really the big man on campus?

One of the best EVER. 5 bright stars. Loved it.
