Is this new guy Henry one of them? Definitely. I can’t
stand this new guy. I just want to punch him every time I see him. I can see the phoniness in his eyes. This new story is
going to bring a whole new slew of possibilities for this half of the season. I am just so excited to find out who this guy
really is.
Let’s talk Sayid because the next time I watch a Sayid-centric
episode, I want to be prepared for what I see. I have a tendency to forget how great Naveen Andrews is. He just puts on a
rock solid performance. This week, we learnt that he was forced to torture his commanding officer. Hey, the honour thing is totally overrated. We all thought Sayid was never a man who should fight in a war. As
he explains though, he was always capable of doing what was necessary. He says: “I am Sayid Jarrah and I am a torturer.”
This made me shiver.
Frankly, honour is of utmost importance during war. It drives
the soldier to keep fighting…to die for his (or her) country. Tariq, Sayid’s commanding officer, never thought
he would disobey the rules. He was expecting Sayid to grab one of the Americans’ guns and shoot himself to save any
dignity he still has. I don’t understand how some of these people think. Is killing innocent women and children honourable?
I understood Sayid’s anger. Why should Tariq be spared? He did what he had to do no matter how much blood was on his
hands. There was a lot.
Sayid’s character continues to intrigue me. He says
he still is as tough as he was in Iraq, but he’s gone soft. He completely melted apart while torturing Henry. He still remembers Shannon and Henry
mentioning that he had to bury his wife…it was tough. He played exactly in his hands though. He let his guard down and
Henry was able to ask questions that deeply affected the ex-Iraqi soldier. That was
stupid on his part.
So let’s each take guesses. I say Henry is definitely
an Other. Is there any doubt at this point? Sayid’s conversation with Charlie sealed it. A torturer develops some type
of instinct; he felt no remorse for doing what he did to Gale. I loved his ending speech:
“They have forgotten…(to Charlie) that you were strung up by your neck and left for dead. That Claire
was taken for days which God knows what happened to her. That these people, these Others, are merciless and can take any one
of us if they choose. So, tell me, Charlie, have you forgotten?”
This sent chills down my
back. It felt very end-of-the-world talk didn’t it? I have a question though. Why was he talking to Charlie? I thought
Charlie was an outsider now. I guess he’s the only one that will listen. But it’s true. This is what has aggravated
me. Everyone has forgotten what they’ve done to our Losties. They almost killed Charlie. They kidnapped Claire. They
took like fifteen of the Tailies. Why isn’t anyone doing anything to try and stop them? I’m glad Sayid is back
in that mind-set. He knows they have to do something.
I have to talk about Jack because I have to get it out of
my system. I cannot stand him. He is the most cocky, self-absorbed, self-loving, Urghh!!! I can’t stand him. I love
how in one instant he’s all for taking a gun and going against the Others. However, when someone else is leading the
party, he has a freakin’ problem. How dare he use Locke’s obsession with the button against him? He thought he
was so damn smart with this idea. Can you tell I hate him? But honestly, it’s
time for someone to just give him a reality check: he isn’t God’s gift to earth.
Oh and wait! Did we all see something weird happen to the
countdown clock? It reached zero and the numbers became hieroglyphics. I think that’s what they are. What did they mean?
I want it to reach “zero” again.
Spotlight on…Sayid
-
Sayid and his fellow soldiers are shredding
anything they can find. The American soldiers barge in and ask for the commanding officer. They choose Sayid to speak to them.
They want him to tell them. He says there isn’t a commanding officer. They already know who he is though.
-
The Americans want him to translate for them.
His commanding officer, Tariq, won’t reveal where the missing pilot is. The Americans really want to know. He won’t
tell Sayid.
-
Sayid is brought to be questioned in front
of the man in charge. This man tells him that Tariq killed women and children from his hometown. He wants Sayid to make Tariq
talk.
-
Tariq tells Sayid that he can’t torture
him. He isn’t able to do it. Sayid tortures him and he learns that the pilot was executed two days ago. He’ll
take the soldiers to where he was buried.
-
The man in charge tells Sayid that he’s
done with him. He leaves him in the middle of the road with enough money to get him on a bus.
Tales from the Island
Sayid: I don’t regret
at all what I did. I think it was necessary and I think this man deserved it. I know he’s an Other. I know exactly why
he’s bad. I didn’t feel anything. I just kept punching him. I just kept punching him. I just felt happier and
happier. Jack has forgotten…even Locke. They took our own. They have tried to infiltrate us. They have tried and tried
and tried. How are we just sitting on the beach forgetting all of this? It’s like we have forgotten about the importance
of family. We aren’t a family. We are a power struggle. Jack and Locke are fighting for control of the camp and the
Others are getting stronger and stronger. They have all forgotten.
Quotable Quotes
-
Sayid: “What are you doing here Danielle?”
Danielle: “Looking
for you.” She always pops up this one.
-
Sawyer: “You have to refrigerate that
after opening.”
Hurley: “Well
on the back it says it’ll keep at room temperature for seven years.” Gee, what kind is it?
-
Sayid: “You could have killed him.”
Danielle: “If
I wanted to kill him, I would have killed him.”
-
Jack: “You shot him with an arrow?”
Sayid: “Do I
have a bow?”
-
Sawyer: “If this were a scary movie,
I’d be with a hot chick, not you, Barbar.”
Hurley: “It’s
Babar.” That’s so mean.
and
then…
Sawyer: “Why don’t you shut up Hammo? Or your Ranch disorder’s gonna be the
new lead item on the coconut internet.” That’s
even meaner.
-
Jack: “What is he’s telling the
truth John?”
Locke: “What
if he’s not?”
-
Sayid: “There is a part of me that is
always capable. You want to know who I am? I am Sayid Jarrah and I’m a torturer.”
Some Final Notes
-
Did anyone notice that one of the American
soldiers in Sayid’s flashbacks was Kate’s “father”, Sgt. Austen?
-
I like how Danielle just pops out of nowhere.
She carries a bow and arrow, shoots anyone she wants. I love this girl.
-
Sawyer was on a hunt to get a frog. He enlists
poor Hurley’s help. Is there something wrong with Sawyer? Why does he have to be so mean? I felt so bad for Hurley.
I’m glad he said at least he’s liked. I was like. “Wooo-hooo!”
-
Jin isn’t speaking to Sawyer anymore.
-
Sawyer called Hurley “Rerun,”
“Hammo” and “Babar.”
-
Henry Gale is supposedly from Minnesota where he met his wife at University of Minnesota. His wife died a few days ago. She got sick. Is this referring to the disease
on the island—the one why there’s a QUARANTINE sign on the door?
-
Henry came in a balloon. I don’t buy
that. He also says he’s rich. More lies.
-
I can’t believe Sayid went all out choosing
to change the combo on Jack. Locke should have decided to scram.
-
Hurley says he had a frog named “Stewart.”
-
Sawyer just squished the frog. That’s
freakin’ gross.
-
That last scene with Charlie is still in my
head.
Another solid one. 4 stars
