Everybody Hates Hugo
Episode 2.4

I don’t hate Hugo and hopefully no one ever will. How can you hate the guy? And he can’t bear knowing somebody hates him. Although they might be irrelevant to the mythology, Hurley episodes are necessary. It adds some comedic relief to the show and it further develops the lesser characters of the show.

This week’s flashbacks take place right before Hurley’s first ones. They show what happens to him right after he discovers he won the money. First, like any mega-multimillionaire would do, he quits his useless job at Mr. Clucks. No harm there, right? No, except his friend Johnny follows suit and quits with him. Problem: Johnny doesn’t own millions of dollars. That is a problem.

I really felt bad for Hurley. He needs to know that people like him. He has been liked all his life and he doesn’t know how to deal with anything else. I just loved Hurley in the flashbacks. I liked how he tried to fix himself up with Starla before she learns he’s rich. Did it work? Did he go out with her in the end? I would think so now that she knows he’s got a whole bundle of cash. Wait, that’s a bad thing right?

Hurley dealt with the food situation well though. And I can understand why he was so reluctant to do the food inventory. He was about to lose his best friends. Charlie (I can’t stand him anymore) went all ballistic because Hurley wouldn’t give him peanut butter. You don’t well at your best friend like that if he was given an order. I hate him so much. So the big party was a great idea. I kind of wanted to be there at that moment. I just realized though what Hurley’s good at: he’s able to make people smile.

Is there something brewing between Kate and Jack? We all know he wanted to grab her and take that towel off her. Hell, I’d be fine with it too. And they looked pretty cozy eating their little snacks together around the campfire. How is Sawyer going to react when he sees them together?

Speaking of Sawyer, every time he was on-screen I nearly died laughing. He is the most hysterical character on the show. His chemistry with Ana-Lucia just works. She, being the psycho freak, can just dominate Sawyer. She really likes beating people up. There’s one out of the hundreds that just made me cry: Ana-Lucia says, “When I say jump, you say…” and Sawyer replies, “You first.” I’m telling you. I couldn’t stop laughing.

So the blonde girl (Cynthia Watros) who was speaking with Michael revealed that there were twenty-three survivors from the tail section. It looks like only seven or eight have survived. I’m guessing Ana-Lucia took command. That big black guy is really scary though. He seems like the muscle of the group. And I think I caught sight of Libby, the flight attendant. Is that possible? And of course, BERNARD IS ALIVE. Is Rose psychic or something? I hope they reunite soon?

Spotlight on…Hurley

-          Hurley is watching tv and he sees the winning lottery numbers. He won. He faints. His mom hears the crash and he hides his lottery card from her. His mother gets the impression that he’s depressed. She wants him to get a life.

-          Hurley works at Mr. Cluck’s. He’s called into the back to speak to his boss. He was caught on videotape eating on the job. Not wanting this abuse anymore, he quits. His friend Johnny quits with him.

-          Hurley is at a cd store and he wants to ask a girl out. Her name is Starla and he’s been hung up on her a while. He wants to ask her out before he announces he won the money.

-          Johnny and Hurley drop gnomes all over their ex-boss’ lawn. Hurley is enjoying this moment. He never wants them to change.

-          Johnny drives to a convenience store. They notice a crew of photographers. They recognize him as the man who won the lottery.

Tales from the Island

Hurley: I couldn’t just give people some jars of peanut butter, and others people potato chips…and salad dressing. People don’t get angry at the people who have the better stuff; they get angry at me. I can’t deal with people not liking me. Today, I would always think of Johnny. I really screwed that guy over. He was so excited to quit with me from Mr. Cluck’s and then I just broke him apart. I tore him apart. I should have told him about the money rather than dragging it on like that. I couldn’t have the same thing on the island. Not here.

Quotable Quotes

-          Sawyer (to Jin about his shoulder): “Ah, yeah. Why don’t you pee on it?”

-          Sawyer: “Ain’t life grand. What I wouldn’t give for a cup of water right now.” I just feel thirsty watching them in the jungle.

-          Ana-Lucia: “When I tell you to do something, you do it. I say move, you move. I say stop, you stop. I say jumo, what do you say?”

Sawyer: “You first.” I loved this one.

-          Sawyer: “She’s bluffing, that’s gun’s only got one bullet she ain’t gonna waste it. (gets hit by a rock) Oww…Son of a…”

-          Charlie: “You’ve become one of them.”

Hurley: “One of them?”

Charlie: “Them. The man…management.”

-          Hurley: “Apollo bars. Ever hear of these.”

Rose: “No. But candy is candy.”

-          Hurley: “She’s cool. She won’t tell anyone.”

Rose: “Honey, I don’t even know what I would say.”

-          Michael: “I think they’re trying to figure out what do to with us.”

Sawyer: “I think they’re gonna eat us.”

-          Johnny: “Drive-shaft. More like Suck-shaft.”

-          Michael: “Everything is cool. We had a talk and they believe we were on the plane too.”

Sawyer: “Swell. Guess we could all sue Oceanic together.”

-          Hurley: “Guess who gets to be the bad guy. And to say ‘no’ to the cute blonde and her poor island baby.”

Some Final Notes

-          Did anyone notice Walt on the milk carton in Hurley’s dream? I didn’t.

-          Is Hurley’s box company the same one that Locke used to work at? We can assume because Randy also worked at that company.

-          Hurley was looking at the Drive Shaft cd. They are in the “One-Hit Wonders” section.

-          The symbol on the Tailies’ hatch is an arrow. What was it used for?

-          Sawyer’s nicknames: Rambina and Hotlips for Ana-Lucia

-          Hurley’s dream with Jin speaking English was weird. I’m sure Daniel Dae Kim was ecstatic to speak in English.

-          Rose was back this week as she looked absolutely shocked seeing the hatch. I liked how Hurley said that she’s cool and she wouldn’t say anything.

-          Claire found the message bottle. Why would she give it to Sun? We knew Sun was going to something like bury it.

-          Originally, twenty-three of the Tailies survived. There aren’t that many left.

-          Hurley was going to blow up the food. Now I wonder why he was in an asylum. Who destroys food?

-          Claire freaked when she saw peanut butter.

-          Bernard is alive. Now how did Rose know that?

Nice one. 4 stars
