The Other 48 Days
Episode 2.7

Wow! I am in shock. What an episode! This is an instant classic. And I kind of knew it was going to be this good. Firstly, Damon and Carlton wrote it. Secondly, the previews just hyped it up and it didn’t disappoint. Thirdly, the episode from the beginning gave us what we wanted. We wanted answers. AND WE GOT THEM!

For those of you who had trouble keeping up with everything, I wrote a summary of what happened each day in the “Spotlight on…” section.

I don’t even know where to start. I guess I’ll start with Ana Lucia since she just drove this whole episode. To tell you the truth, Michelle Rodriguez shocked me. I never knew she could act so well. Right when the tail end fell into the water, Ana Lucia was there to save everyone. So far, I think Ana Lucia has been misunderstood. I understand her know. There’s a reason why she’s psycho. She was the brains of the whole operational: she lured out the mole, she kept them alive and she fought to protect them. I couldn’t help but fall in love with Ana Lucia at the end of the episode when she just broke down in Eko’s arms. She’s more than a buff ass-kicking leader; she’s human.

Can I just talk about the genius of the person who came up with Eko’s character? It was time to have a religious character on the show. Or that’s what I guess he is. That or he’s mute. This character is complex. There are layers to this big guy. On the first night when he’s attacked by the Others, he fights them off. I still have that image of him blood-filled and angry with that rock in his hands. I’ll never forget that. The actor, who’s name is too long so I’ll call him AAA, did a brilliant job. I loved the idea of waiting forty days to talk. He’s obviously religious or spiritual to say the least. I also want to find out what’s up with that stick of his.

So we have some clarification on who Goodwin was; he was the man in the jungle that Jin saw. Who’s Goodwin? That freakin’ maniac that Ana Lucia killed. I should have caught on that he was an Other when he ran out of the jungle, dry. Then again, I never catch on. Hats off to Ana Lucia though for catching on. So I’m guessing Goodwin’s job was to provide his people some kind of intel to know who to catch.

I’m very interested with the list. As it turns out, you have to be “good” to be on that list. It sounds like only the innocent can be on that list. That would explain why the children were taken. Why was everyone else taken? Was it because of what Goodwin said? Some were strong and others were just innocent. He says Nathan was not good and so he wasn’t on the list.

I was as convinced as Ana Lucia was that Nathan was the bad guy. It felt like a perfect fit. In fact, it felt so right that it should have clicked that it couldn’t have been him. But what was his problem? Why couldn’t he just follow the rules? I hate people who try to prove that they’re badasses. For goodness sake’s. Just stick with the rest. I’m glad Ana Lucia was close to cutting his finger off.

What’s going with their hatch? The arrow. Goodwin says it’s a storage facility. I guess he could be right. Why was there a glass eye, a Bible and a radio in there? I loved the story of the radio. Who would have thought that Bernard was the one talking to Boone on the plane? Once again, I should have caught on. Ana was wrong there to turn it off. But was she wrong to think like that. I don’t blame her for panicking. She couldn’t let the Others get to them again.

Spotlight on…The Tailies

Day 1: The tail end of flight 815 falls into the ocean. The passengers are trying to get to shore. At night, they are attacked. Eko kills two of them. Ana Lucia inspects them and she deduces that they came from the island. They were here before them.

Day 2: Three passengers are missing. They were kidnapped.

Day 3: Donald (the man with the broken leg) is close to dying. Ana says they can’t do anything about it.

Day 5: Donald dies.

Day 7: The guys catch a chicken. Eko still isn’t talking to anyone. He makes a stick. Libby tries getting him to eat. She tells him it’s not his fault they died.

Day 12: Ana Lucia is suspicious of Nathan who left the shore for a while. He says he had to go the bathroom. At night, the Others took the kids. Ana Lucia kills one of them. She finds a list in her pocket. It’s a list of the nine that were kidnapped. Eko isn’t able to follow them. They covered their tracks.

Day 15: They have to leave the beach. They find a place somewhere on the lake.

Day 17: Ana Lucia is digging a hole. She wants to see if Nathan is the mole.

Day 19: Ana takes out Nathan and throws him in the pit. She asks him questions. He says he’s from Canada. He came with a company retreat.

Day 23: Nathan is still in the pit. Ana learns that someone gave him food. Eko did. Goodwin tries to convince Ana to let him out. He says they aren’t savages. She says she’s planning on slicing his finger off tomorrow. Goodwin decides to kill Nathan.

Day 24: Cindy comes running. She says Nathan’s gone. Ana says they’ve found them. It’s time to move.

Day 26: They make it back to the beach.

Day 27: They find a bunker. They think it’s a storage facility. They find a box with a Bible inside, a glass eye and a radio. Goodwin wants to find higher ground to try it out. Ana Lucia isn’t leaving him out of her sight. She wants to go with him. She is obviously suspicious. She gets him where she wants him. She knows he’s the mole. She kills him.

Day 41: Bernard catches a signal. It was Boone’s transmission. Ana turns the radio off. She thinks it’s the Others.

Day 45: Libby and Cindy find Jin washed up on shore.

Days 45-48: The last three episodes.

Tales from the Island

Cindy, Day 2 on the island: We’re all scared. I don’t know what to do. Last night, they came and took three of us. That big man killed two of them. He was so scared. His eyes were filled with anger. I was scared. And we have the children here. How can we protect them in this place? How did we survive first of all? The pilot told me that we had lost communication. For two hours, we were flying nowhere. They won’t find us. They don’t know where to look.

Libby, Day 7 on the island: I can’t Mr. Eko to talk. I thought I used to be able to do something like this. I can’t do it. He just doesn’t want to eat. He hasn’t spoken for a week. I’m scared for him. We have to all stay together. We can’t do that if one of our strongest isn’t eating. He’s different. He seems very religious. He keeps working on this stick. I couldn’t see what he was writing. I feel like I’m losing my mind. I lost this man named Donald. After I set his leg back, he obviously got an infection. He just died the next die. We need to get out of here.

Bernard, Day 19 on the island: Ana has lost it. She captured Nathan and she threw him into some pit. He’s rotting in there and she doesn’t want anyone feeding him. She wants him to suffer in there. I mean I owe her my life, but I don’t want us to lose our humanity. This isn’t how we deal with our problems. None of us can be a mole. It isn’t possible. We’ve gone through too much to do something like that.

Cindy, Day 41 on the island: Bernard caught something on the radio. I swore I heard someone say they were the survivors of flight 815. How is Ana so sure that no one else survived? It was a miracle that we survived. I don’t blame Bernard for trying to be hopeful. He’s trying to find his wife who probably didn’t make it out alive. She was at the front of the plane. I feel bad for him.

Quotable Quotes

-          Eko (about Rose): “I will pray for her.”

-          Ana: “These people were here before us.”

-          Ana: “It’s a list.”

Libby: “A list of what?”

Ana: “Nine…of us.”

-          Ana (to Nathan): “You and I are gonna have a talk.” I wouldn’t want to be him.

-          Ana: “I promised that girl that I would get her back to her mom.”

-          Goodwin: “We should let him go. We’re not savages.”

Ana: “If I was a savage, I would have cut off his finger already. (pause) That’s tomorrow.”

-          Goodwin: “Maybe they’re not attacking us.”

Ana: “Yeah, they just drag us into the jungle every now and then. No real harm done.”

-          Goodwin: “Nathan wasn’t a good person. That’s why he wasn’t on the list.”

-          Ana: “What about the kids? Did you kill them too?”

Goodwin: “The kids are fine. They’re better off now.”

-          Ana: “What you’re talking now?”

Eko: “It’s been forty days.” This guy is great.

-          Ana: “You waited forty days to talk?”

Eko: “You waited forty days to cry.” Best moment of the week.

Some Final Notes

-          The teddy bear we previously saw belonged to the little boy.

-          Libby was just able to snap someone’s leg back. She’s good.

-          Bernard was in a real mess being stuck in the tree and all. Ana Lucia was good there giving him the confidence to relax and hang on to the tree.

-          Now we know where the pit came from.

-          Did everyone notice the “Quarantine” on the door?

-          I loved the final scenes (Day 45-48). It was great doing like a fast flashforward of all the scenes we’ve seen. The music was great and it beautifully summarized the Tailies’ adventures.

Slam-bang answer-filled episode. I LOVED it. 6 stars
