As a copy of the famous book lands on the island, so does
a million other questions. You can’t imagine how happy I am that Marsha Thomason has been added to the cast. I used
to love her on Las Vegas and now she’s on my favourite show. How does she know Desmond?
I’m going to bet that she’s working with Penny
somehow, probably sent by her. She was probably sent in to scout the island and find Desmond. Even greater, this woman might
have some way to contact Penny other than the satellite phone. We knew the phone wasn’t going to work. I liked how Hurley
didn’t expect much from it. They all knew it wasn’t going to work. But what is the effect this woman’s arrival
is going to have on our Losties? What development can we expect? I’m just
happy Marsha Thomason is on the island.
I was waiting for an episode such as this. I wanted to see
Desmond have a vision and try to prevent it. I wanted to see what a vision looks like. I wanted to see him struggle with saving
Charlie’s life. As expected though, he couldn’t let the guitarist die. Personally,
I think it’s time he bites it. This just goes to show what kind of person Desmond is. He will fight until the end
to prevent his friend’s death. But there was one thing about thing that I never expected.
He was a monk. Wow. Talk about awkward. I think being a monk
is the hardest job to do; no drinking, no sex (the sex is big), and living a pure
and decent life. I commend anyone who is able to pursue a life like that. Desmond wasn’t cut out for that life. If you
think about it, Desmond is also a man of faith. He believed that he had to follow the monk from the alley because it was God’s
intention. He had to become a monk because he thought it was his fate. He thought it was meant to happen. In doing so, Desmond
gave up his fiancé. When he came back, he wasn’t given any pity. Who ever said
that being a monk was honourable? I was also happy to finally learn why he calls everyone “brother.” Finally!
Back on the island, Desmond followed a vision that was going
to lead to Charlie’s death. From the previews for this episode, I thought a helicopter was going to land on the island.
That would have been a bit much though. What was the importance of the cable (big wire) being in the vision? In retrospect,
it was completely useless to this week’s story. I want to see where this cable leads to though.
We finally got some Kate action as she ran into Sawyer’s
arms after seeing Jack with Juliet. That was a weird moment where she started crying while she was undressing him. Totally
believable. What’s up with Jack? I’m happy Kate’s not with him. He doesn’t deserve her. Is he that
much of a sour puss though that he can’t get over what Kate accidentally did? She was trying to save him and he was
selfish enough to leave. Why haven’t they excommunicated him? I am not kidding.
Things are going to hopefully fall in my favour when the Others return for Juliet and the camp realizes that Jack wrongfully
trusted her. He’s got something coming for him.
Spotlight on…Desmond
-
Desmond has short hair. He is in a dark cell.
A monk comes to hand him some clothes. He has passed some sort of test. He is a monk now.
-
Desmond has opted to not speak in a while.
He is sorting out the abbey’s wine. He questions the story of Abraham and Isaac. His mentor monk is offended. Out of
nowhere, a man comes to punch him.
-
Desmond goes to the puncher’s house.
He wants to visit his sister. He was to get married to her. Her name is Ruth. Desmond says he wants to give her an explanation
for why he left. He says one day he woke up in an alley, drunk. A monk helped him up and Desmond followed him. He knew after
that moment that he was meant to follow him to the monastery. Ruth doesn’t care; she wants him to leave.
-
Desmond is drunk on the monastery’s
wine. His mentor comes to speak with him—to fire him. The monastery isn’t the place for him. God has other plans
for him.
-
Desmond returns his robes. He helps this woman
load up some wine in her caravan. Her name is Penny. She offers him a ride to Carlisle. He doesn’t refuse.
Tales from the Island
Desmond: How much longer
am I going to have to save Charlie? I won’t be able to stop it. I made a judgment call today. I saved Charlie. I had
a vision. I saw him get shot by an arrow in his neck. So I risked my like for his. Should I keep doing this? He’s going
to die. I just can’t do it. I can’t let him just get shot. How am I going to keep doing this? I don’t want
to keep dragging half the island into the jungle. It’s not the right thing to do. We saw a red light fall into the jungle.
The guys want to wait for morning. I know it’s Penny. I have to go to her.
Quotable Quotes
-
Desmond: “Where’s the wire?”
Hurley:
“Did you eat the mushrooms Jack warned us about?”
-
Kate: “Well they had another camera.”
Sawyer: “Perverts.”
-
Hurley: “Everybody likes marshmallows.”
They do.
-
Sawyer: “Hey Freckles, you home?”
Kate: “Thought you weren't allowed to use nicknames.”
Sawyer:
“Well, you weren't around when I lost the bet so you're...exempt.”
-
Hurley: "Dude, even if I spoke Korean it wouldn't make any sense."
-
Ruth: "We dated for six years and the closest you ever came to a religious experience was Celtics winning the cup."
-
Kate: "It's strange,
huh, being back? Not looking for a way out of a cage, not finding a reason to go running off into the jungle again. I'm not
sure what to do with myself."
-
Sawyer: “You two arguing over who’s
your favourite Other?” This was a good one.
Some Final Notes
-
I loved the argument Hurley was having with
Charlie over Batman and Flash. Nice moment.
-
Desmond learned to say “brother”
from the monk.
-
Sawyer originally asked if Kate told Jack
anything about their little affair. That’s a weird question.
-
I loved the campfire scene where Jin was telling
Hurley and Charlie a scary story. Probably one of my favourite moments.
-
Hurley called Danielle’s traps “spikey
death trap things.”
-
The copy of “Catch-22” was in
Portuguese with a picture of Desmond and Penny in the flap.
-
Did everyone notice the old lade from “Flashes
Before Your Eyes” in the picture on the monk’s desk.
-
Sawyer gave Kate a mix tape. That’s
nice.
-
I love Marsha Thomason.
We got a nice cliffhanger,
but the rest of the episode was just okay. 3 stars
