The Man Behind the Curtain
Episode 3.20

Wow. I cannot be any more confused than I am right now. They just had to add another twenty questions to the show to make me want to kill myself knowing I’ll have to wait a while to get them answered. And CAN THEY REALLY KILL LOCKE?

I mean when you think about it, what other possible backstory can Locke have? It seems we’ve seen everything there is to see about him. But it would be devastating to see him go. I mean seriously, he’s been the guy I’ve always wanted to see more of. And lately, his adventures with Ben have just been a complete joy to watch. Probably because their faith in the island works off each other and creates a great chemistry to watch.

But how about Ben? Who is he? I mean, we know he was in brought in to the Dharma Initiative. That we get and I was hoping for such an explanation. But what drives him? Sure, his dad was a selfish drunk who was at the bottom of the barrel who didn’t know how to speak to his child, let alone raise him. So he went to seek for someone who could care for him: the hostiles. This show is too much. First they tell us that Ben was born on the island, clinging to the idea that he was with the original hostiles, and now he supposedly joined them.

Kid Ben was played by a very good actor. I loved the scenes in his childhood. Annie’s character intrigues me. She was the only person that ever loved him. I don’t really think though that he would kill her. I mean, why was he still holding the dolls that she made him? Because if he had killed her, the writers would have showed him running through the village trying to find her dead body. I hope to see more of her.

Ben is a confused character. His complex nature tends to get the better of him. He joins, even from very young, the group that has most to offer; he wants to be in a position of power. And from young, he’s always been able to make cutting decisions. He can exterminate hundreds to get what he wants. This incites two possible qualities: his vulnerability when it comes to be persuaded by others or his ruthlessness. Take your pick.

There’s no denying Ben is an evil character. He is. He killed every man and woman in that camp. He, before that, personally killed his father in a truck (ROGER!!!). I just don’t get why people take time out of their days to kill people. I just forget them. Was Ben really that hurt when his father didn’t tell him “Happy Birthday!” Like seriously, it’s time you grow up. Children suffer that kind of crap every day. You don’t go around and killing your parents. But Ben himself is just morbid. First of all, how could he not cover the pit with the bodies? Usually, something would grow over it because of erosion and all, but we’ll forget about nature’s complexities. How is he able to return to the scene of the crime and just stare at all those dead bodies? What gives him that strength to do that?

I think a large part has to do with his belief in Jacob. I’m not about to admit that he exists because we all know that Locke himself is sometimes delusional. He has believed in things that have made me roll my eyes. Now, he finds himself in some old house where an invisible man is on a chair yelling at Ben…only we can’t see him. This guys is supposedly afraid of technology. When Locke turned on the flashlight, we caught a quick glimpse of an old man. I guess that’s why he didn’t like technology.

This whole Jacob thing has me really confused. Where are the writers going with this? It just felt very haunted-movie-for-kids, even fairy-tale like. I don’t think I loved it that much. And what made the house shake that much? Could that have been the smoke monster because they were outside the safe zone? Very interesting.

We have to speak a bit about Locke because his character took a very interesting turn. As previously seen, Locke is a man of action. When he wants answers to his questions, he will get them. There’s a particular moment where he beats the crap out of Bakunin that just made me think: Locke can be as vicious and cut-throat as anyone. Now, I just hope he’s not dead.

Back at the camp, there wasn’t much going on except for a (hopefully) an excommunication of some sort of Jack. Who does he think he is? His explanation for not telling anyone about the lurking invasion was because “he hadn’t decided what to do about it yet.” Excuse me! Who died and made you ruler of the camp? I honestly felt like hitting him. I just wished Sawyer would have just tackled him to the ground. He needs to get beaten up. I’m not kidding. I’ve had it with Jack and it’s time he dies.

Spotlight on…Ben

-          A woman is giving birth in the forest. She dies when she gives birth to the baby. Her name is Emily and her husband’s name is Roger. That baby is named Benjamin.

-          Roger and Ben are brought to the island by the Dharma Initiative. This man Horace Godspeed greets them. They watch the orientation video by Marvin Kandle. He says they are enclosed by a fence for their protection. They are here to study the island’s properties. People are getting injected. Ben also meets a little girl; her name is Annie.

-          Ben is in chem class. Annie talks about a volcano on their island. It once erupted and it can again. The alarm starts ringing and there’s an earthquake. The children head for the wall. The teacher says it’s the hostiles. Later that night, Ben hears his father yelling at Horace. He wants a better job with more money. He thinks he sees someone in the window.

-          Annie gives Ben a birthday present; she sculpted both of them. His father forgets to wish him happy birthday at night. He’s drunk and he accuses him of killing his wife. He runs out of the house and he thinks he sees his mother. She tells him to turn back. He’s not ready to follow her.

-          Ben runs back to the fence. He has the password. He crosses it and finds a man in the forest. This man looks like Richard who is with him in the present. He wants to go back with this man.

-          Ben is now grown-up. He tells his father than he forgot his birthday again. Ben asks his father if he really believes it’s his fault that his mother died. He kills him in the truck. He then goes back to the village and everyone is dead. He killed the members of the Dharma Initiative so the hostiles can come in.

Tales from the Island

Ben: What did he tell Locke that he couldn’t tell me? He asked him to help him. Why would he need help? I am the one he’s always confided in. He has summoned me whenever he’s needed me. Why would he confide in John? I did what he always asked of me. So I took him to the pit where we dumped all the dead bodies. And I shot him. He landed right inside—just so I can make sure he never returns to Jacob. Never.

Quotable Quotes

-          Ben: “I’m one of the last that was.” The last of what? We can’t believe a single word that comes out of his mouth.

-          Locke: “You are the man behind the curtain, the Wizard of Oz and a liar.” Nicely said.

-          Ben: “I thought you were dead.”

Mikhail: “I’m fortunate the pylons weren’t set to lethal level.” Lame!

-          Annie: “Don’t worry. It’s only the hostiles.” Only?

-          Ben: “This is a man who summons you.”

Locke: “Then I guess there’s a first time for everything.”

-          Ben: “I’m sorry you’re too limited to see.”

-          Richard: “You want us to get his body?”

Ben: “No. Leave him out there.”

-          Ben (to Locke about Jacob): “I hope he helps you John.”

-          Sawyer: "Good person, huh? And you're basing that one what? Wouldn't involve her taking you to one of their medical stations, would it now, Mrs. Kwon?"

Some Final Notes

-          We finally got resolution to the Roger Linus storyline introduced in Hurley’s episode. I loved it.

-          I loved how we found out about the history of the little town. This was a Dharma Initiative camp. There were inhabitants on the island beforehand.

-          Why didn’t Richard get any older? Don’t tell me there’s something called immortality on the island.

-          Marvin Kandle was back to do his little orientation. The fence was created to keep away the island’s wildlife. Anything else?

-          I found Mikhail’s explanation for not dying major lame. This storyline aggravated me. I would much rather have Miss Klugh back. She was fun.

-          Why did Alex give Locke a gun? I love that girl.

-          Was that really Ben’s mom? She told him he wasn’t ready to see her. Did he ever?

-          The Jack and Juliet duo is getting to me.

-          We caught a quick glimpse of Jacob…and he’s old.

-          Ben caused the purge. Excellent.

-          What happened to Annie?

-          Is Locke going to die?

I loved it. 5 stars
