I did love this episode. Absolutely great. It might not have
been one of the best ever, but it surely was close. Evangeline Lilly was freakin’ awesome and the cliffhanger made me
jump. Why are they doing this to me? Jack got some great stuff this week and Locke and the gang bury Eko. Some people die
and other might. In any case, Lost went out with a bang.
I am impressed. When I was re-watching season one, I had
noticed in the episode “Outlaws” that Kate said she was married. It was a short marriage, but a marriage nonetheless.
Like so many fans, I kept worrying that this along with a million other questions would not be answered. I am so sorry I underestimated the writers. It was great to have Nathan Fillion on board as Kevin, Kate’s
(or should I say Monica’s) husband. At the beginning of the episode, it wasn’t clear whether Kate was a fugitive
at that point in her life, but it quickly became clear. She phoned the marshal begging him to let her go. She was tired of
running and she loved the man she married. The marshal dared her to settle down. She couldn’t do it. Obviously, this
raises the question of whether Kate was truly “born to run.” Maybe narrowly escaping the cops and wearing wigs
is a part of her. I don’t see how but it is a theory. She says this herself.
She tells Kevin that she hates “taco night” and she hates the whole idea of marriage. She cared about Kevin, but
not enough to give herself up. Did she really love him or did she mix up the idea of love with the idea of settling down?
Kate gave herself up for Sawyer.
I know the writers promised a “sexier” season,
but this wasn’t “sexier,” this was all “sexed” out. Kate and Sawyer just went at it on camera.
Although I don’t like my tv shows to resort to sex scenes and “risky” stories, this was well needed. Seriously,
the love triangle progressed. There I was in the beginning of September thinking the love triangle mystery would be solved
after the second episode, and here we are now with Kate saying she loves Sawyer but evidently loves Jack. This girl has to make up her mind. I have a question for you: if Jack had been in the cage rather than Sawyer,
would Kate be behaving the same way? Would Kate fall for Jack? Interesting.
I was shocked that Ben just went into the surgery room and
assumed Jack wouldn’t in some way hurt him. Come on, even I saw that coming.
We knew Jack would never hurt Kate. That whole scene with Kate was a show. He knows she loves Sawyer and he knows he loves
her. He’s not about to let Sawyer die for his selfish reasons. That wouldn’t be a move Jack would make. Ben can
now die in the next hour if Jack doesn’t sew his kidney up. Of course, Kate doesn’t want to run because she realizes
that she might just love Jack too. Sawyer, on the other hand, finally got what he wanted. He also professed his love for Kate.
This whole thing is a mess.
Matthew Fox is an amazing actor. He has really bloomed this
season. And I’m just plain happy that Jack finally got involved to help free Kate. He cares for her and he is going
to help her escape with the man she loved, Sawyer. Jack telling Ben how he is going to die was great. Jack doesn’t follow
his morals now; he is beyond that. When a man is beaten down as much as Jack has been, he no longer follows his rules.
And finally, Locke buried Eko. I’m glad Locke remembered
to bury Eko with his stick. But of course, Eko left a message for Locke. He tells Locke to lift his eyes up and look north.
Where is this going to lead us to? What is Eko trying to tell Locke? Is it Eko who wrote it?
Spotlight on…Kate

Kate is going to marry this cop. His name
is Kevin. It’s the day before the wedding.

Kate tries on her wedding dress. Kate speaks
with her mother-in-law. She knows Kate as Monica. She gives a Kate a necklace.

Kate is shopping at the supermarket. Kate
calls the marshal from the payphone. She asks him to give up on chasing her. He says that will never happen.

Kevin bought two tickets for a vacation to
Costa Rica.

Kate takes a pregnancy test and finds out
she is not pregnant. She tells him she’s a fugitive and she returns him his mother’s necklace. She drugs him and

Tales from the Island
Kate: I had to do it. I
slept with Sawyer. I love him. I got out of my cage and opened his as well. He told me we couldn’t escape. He says we’re
on another island. I couldn’t help it. Sawyer said he wanted to keep hope alive. It was time. Then, Pickett came and
grabbed Sawyer and threw him to the ground. He was going to kill him. Zeke, just in time, paged Pickett telling him to let
us go. Jack talked to me, telling me to remember the story he told me right after the crash. He had said that he only lets
fear consume him for five seconds. He wants me to remember this and run. I can’t leave him though.
Quotable Quotes
-
Kate: “No, Sawyer. We're a team. You break the rocks, I haul them away.”
Pickett (opening Sawyer's cage): “All right. Fine. Lord knows I wouldn't
want to break up the team.”
-
Kate (referring to Sawyer's keeping the second island a secret): “When
were you planning on telling me this?”
Sawyer: “Never!”
Kate: “Why not?!”
Sawyer:
“Because I wanted you to think we had a damn chance.”
-
Kate: “I thought it was bad luck to see the bride before the wedding.”
Kevin: “No, it's bad luck to see the bride in her dress before the wedding.
You, my friend, are naked.”
-
Ben: “Well Jack I'm very disappointed in your decision.”
Jack: “Well Ben, at least you won't have to be disappointed for very long!”
-
Alex (to Kate): “Whatever they say don't believe them!
They're gonna kill your boyfriend just like they killed mine!”
-
Ben (After Jack explains the surgery): “Okay, let's do it.”
Jack: “You misunderstood what I said. I didn't say I was gonna do it. I just
wanted you to know how you are going to die.”
Some Final Notes
-
Pickett is a very disturbed man. Hurting people
is not going to help anything or anyone.
-
We saw Alex today. She called Pickett “daddy.”
Did he adopt her when they brought her to their camp? Also, what’s her connection with Ben? Why was Ben so worked up
about Alex before his surgery? Why isn’t Alex living with The Others? All these questions keep me up at night.
-
The Others killed Alex’s boyfriend.
-
I find it funny that Kate called the marshal.
I guess they became friends over those many months.
-
Why was Juliet so surprised when Jack ruptured
Ben’s kidney? Was she expecting him to be a bit more subtle about killing him? I’m guessing so.
-
Nathan Fillion played Kate’s husband
Kevin. He played Caleb on Buffy.
-
The tickets to Costa Rica were on Oceanic Airlines.
-
I really thought Sawyer was going to die.
If Pickett hadn’t hesitated, Sawyer would be long gone now.
-
I liked the reference to the premiere when
Jack tells Kate to remember the story he tells her when she is sewing his wound. See if you can remember the story.
-
It dawned on me that none of the other survivors
know what the monster is. Sayid wanted some answers. Is the monster coming for Locke next?
-
Is Alex’s boyfriend Carl, the one from
the cage?
-
Who is Jacob? What kind of list does he have?
Why isn’t Jack on it?
-
Awesome cliffhanger. Is Kate going to escape?
I loved it. We have to
wait until February 7th. Nooo! 5 stars
