Ruskie Business
Episode 1.15

Veronica sure does hate these school traditions. She wasn’t even going to go to spring fling. It sounds so cheesy: “A Total Eclipse of the Heart.” Veronica was totally put off. Who can blame her? By losing Duncan and her mother, Veronica is never in the mood. Furthermore, she learns that Meg’s secret admirer is Duncan. I never saw that coming. It was a nice twist. Then again, I never see anything coming. The episode was well done with a great Logan storyline and we meet Veronica’s mom (the alcoholic). She’s even being followed by Clarence Wiedman. This sure will piss Veronica off.

Love is in the air. It’s spring. School is almost over. Ok, maybe in a few months, but who cares? We’re always hopeful. People have secret admirers, and some have no one to go to the spring fling with. How unfortunate. I still haven’t decided whether Veronica wanted someone to ask her out, or if she really was uninterested in the whole dance thing. She was happy that Leo showed up, but deep inside, I think she still likes Duncan. For one thing, I don’t think that Veronica believes her father to be Jake Kane. She’s too smart for that, but she’s also vulnerable. When she saw Duncan with Meg, she really felt hurt. This time last year, she was with Duncan. She was the center of attention. Now, she’s at the bottom of the social ladder with few friends (but nice friends). I really do like Meg. She’s a nice person. She’s sweet and arranged for Leo to come to the party with Veronica. Meg has a good heart and she’s right for Duncan. He might be slightly boring and straight-faced, but he’s a good guy. I did feel for Veronica. She really felt a blow. Veronica, under that rock-hard surface, still believes deep down that she was meant for Duncan. It’s weird in an incest-kind of way, but it makes sense. The dance was great and I loved Veronica’s costume. I wish we see more of Meg because she’s a good person for Veronica to talk to. They are complete opposites and get along great.

Let’s get to the part where everyone’s been waiting for: Logan. For the first time in this series, we have seen the real Logan. Under all that male bravado, he is a young and troubled teen. He just lost his mom and the last thread of hope that she was alive. Then, he learns that his half-sister, Trina, has been using his mother’s credit cards. I do love Alyson Hannigan though. The Buffy days. I miss you. She was indeed convincing as his cold sister and after she left, Logan just started crying. It was such an important scene. He just started tearing up. In the end though, Trina seemed like the only one to care for Logan. She came to the party to bring his sorry self home. I was going to use a--, but I though I should be polite. It’s funny how these things happen. I’m sure you Jason Dohring fans must have cracked a nice smile when you saw him come in half-naked. Don’t lie, I know you did.

The Lilly Kane Files

-          Veronica finds her mother at a bar. Clarence Wiedman has also found her.

Quotable Quotes

-          Catherine Lenova: “He was my soul mate.” All this talk about soul mates is gag-worthy.

-          Veronica: “How hard is it to find an actor named Tom Cruz.” Shouldn’t be that hard.

-          Wallace: “What are you now, the love detective?”

Veronica: “Wallace, if you do this, we’ll be best friends forever. Come on. Don’t you want to be BFF?”

-          Veronica: “Secret admirer strikes again and the plot thickens.” Liked the sarcasm.

-          Wallace: “About this secret mission...”
Veronica: “What'd you get?”
Wallace: “A reputation as a jock sniffer.”

-          Veronica: “Think that’s some kind of rare breed or something?”

Wallace: “That, or a drunk dingo had a three-way with an ocelot or a porcupine.” Loved this one.

-          Keith: “Who the hell names their dog Steve?”

Veronica: “Tom Cruz.” Loved the way she responded.

-          Veronica: “I don’t have horns.” That picture of her was great.

-          Logan: “But if you’re coming home, who will play Dead Hooker Two on CSI this week?” I loved this one.

Some Final Notes

-          Wallace had some great work this week. Was he at the dance?

-          The Russian family was a nice twist. I never saw that coming. It just goes to show how faulty the Witness Protection Program can be.

-          I can’t believe Lynn is really dead. At least we have Trina.

-          I loved Logan’s cell phone message. He’s so the type to do that.

-          I hope we see more of Meg.

-          Veronica should hook up with Logan. I don’t like Leo.

-          Veronica has found her mom. She even found Clarence Wiedman. Fantastic. Now, he’s on their trail again.

Beautiful episode. 5 stars
