The Girl Next Door
Episode 1.7

They pulled an Alias move on me, didn’t they? They showed a scene and then flashed forward to a week before. Alias is known for that and it really works. You’re hooked for the next hour. I love that. Can this show get any better? I do wish though, that they focus a bit more on the Lilly Kane story. It’s so interesting and significant. Actually, scratch that. Anything Rob Thomas does is interesting and significant.

There’s too much going on. Let’s focus on our main plot. I loved the pregnant woman/abused woman/raped woman storyline. Do all of Neptune’s problems come knocking on Veronica’s door? She should advertise. Sarah, Veronica’s neighbor, really has it bad. She ran away from home because she was raped by her step dad, she ran away from her boyfriend’s house because she was fed up of being abused, and she carries the child of her rapist. Did anyone else freak when Sarah was holding the gun? I personally thought that she was going to commit suicide. It was such a shock to discover that her step father raped her. He was so understated during the episode. Shooting her mother would also make sense. She ran away from home for a reason. Was she angry at her mother for not figuring it out? This whole story is dark. Imagine carrying the child of your step father under your mother’s nose. Scary!

Finally, Jason Dohring and Francis Capra got some scenes together. These two are hysterical together. They both have devilish minds. Again, the writers depict the struggle between the upper class and the lower class. When Weevil was accused without evidence of putting Mr. Daniels car through a pole, he was immediately expelled. When Logan went to confess, Principal Clemmons could not expel Aaron Echoll’s son. We saw some shred of humanity in Logan. He had the guts to save Weevil. He knew he would never be expelled, but he knew he might look vulnerable. That developing friendship almost vanished soon after as Logan notices the tattoo on Weevil’s arm that read Lilly. So Weevil had a thing with Lilly. Who else did Lilly have a thing for?

So Jake and Lianne? Are we all suspecting that Veronica is Jake’s daughter? That will kill me. That would mean Duncan is her half-brother. There’s way too much incest on this show. In the flashbacks, why did Duncan dump Veronica so harshly? How dare him! I want his head on a plate! Why wouldn’t Lilly tell her BF the truth? Was the truth so hard to bear? Did Duncan come up to the same conclusion? Did he think that Veronica was his sister? It would explain his indifference when Veronica told him his father and her mother were a couple. Spooky!

The Lilly Kane Files

-          Lianne and Jake were a couple in high school.

-          In the flashbacks, Duncan suddenly dumped Veronica. Lilly didn’t want Veronica to know the real reason.

Quotable Quotes

-          Logan: “I’ll have my assistant call his assistant.” That’s how things work.

-          Logan: “Is this detention or hell?” Loved that.

-          Logan: “If I donate to the American Latino pain in the ass fund, will you shut the hell up?” Loved this one even more.

-          Veronica: "It sounded like a falling body. It really freaked me out."
Keith: “A falling body?”
Veronica: “Yes, a falling body.”
Keith: “Would you describe the sound as Hitchcockian?”

-          Weevil: “Does this mean I can’t try out for the soccer team?”

-          Keith: “Now, let’s do something normal fathers and daughters do.”

Veronica: “Buy me a pony.” Excellent.

-          Weevil: “You’re almost as bad an actor as your father.”

Logan: “You know that you don’t need a diploma to steal hubcaps, right?”

Some Final Notes

-          No Wallace in this episode.

-          I always thought that Duncan broke up with Veronica after Lilly’s death.

-          Liane graduated in 1979. Was it a coincidence that the yearbook fell into Veronica’s hands?

-          I like Logan.

-          Mr. Clemmons is an idiot.

-          I hate Sarah’s dog. It’s so ugly.

Not the greatest, but certainly good. 3 out of 5 stars.
